[Handwritten]                 On the Yangtse River                     January 28, 1920  My dear Mrs. Havermale:    How very kind and thoughtful of you to send me a steamer letter and that lovely book!    You cannot know how much I appreciate it!  No, I did not have the book!  It is certainly very   enjoyable.  I shall leave it at Tzechow for your son and daughter to read.    I have thought of you as often on this trip, wishing you might have been with us.  All of   the steamers have ceased running on the upper Yangtse, so we came by houseboat.  I believe   you would have enjoyed it tho’, for we have had beautiful weather and grand scenery.  We   have been on the houseboat for more than three weeks.  We hope to reach Chungking on Sat.   Jan. 31. and to spend Sunday Febr. 15th at Tzechow.    Misses Proctor and Harger are both new workers.  They are enjoying the journey very   much.    I surely hope your son’s wife in Evanston is well long before this.  I also hope your   parents health will be as much improved that you can come to China in the fall.  I shall be   greatly disappointed if you do not come.     I thought I might be stationed at Tzechow but I am to be at Chengtu.  However I shall   certainly see you if you come.      With love and many thanks.  So many people on the steamer enjoyed “Brian Kent[“].                              Gratefully yours                 Grace Ellison

Dear Mother:   As we walked out to meet Miss Ellison last Saturday I wondered what I would have felt and acted like if you had been with her. I think it would have been as near an “aviation experience” as I have ever had. But maybe I will know someday. Miss Ellison said after she had rewired your letter saying you could not go, for several days she would find herself having a sad feeling and wonder what was the trouble – Then suddenly remember you were not going with her and that was what caused the sadness. I hope you may know her some day. And Mrs. Manly, that Lewis speaks of in his

Letter is just as fine. A statement in one of your letters, Mother, made me wonder if you thot [sic] one reason we wanted you to come was because I had that little operation. Having it at just that time certainly makes it look so – but it was not a reason. We had planned to have it done before we thot [sic] of your visit. I am feeling somewhat discouraged in it having the desired effect. It seems that the joys of parenthood are not to be ours. The desire has been keener than ever since coming to Tzechow. Due to two reason I think. First it seems that it right to be now if ever – and second there are no little foreign children here for us to enjoy. There are many little Chinese

Babies, all dear, some sweet, but few clean. Oh I can love them and do love them, but we do want one or more of our own so much. But our prayer is and has always been “not our will but God’s.” And I have a work here that leaves me no time to sit around and lament, and our home life is most happy – many things to be thankful for.   In about a week Lewis will leave for two small village evangelistic campaigns. I am planning to go with him and also chaperone two young Chinese girls teachers that are to help in the meetings.

4.

If you should go to Des Moines to the general Conference, you must plan to visit my people at Webster City at the same time as you would be so near. I know my Aunts and Uncle in Des Moines would be glad to see you too. Mother has been quite ill with gall‐bladder trouble but was able to be up and around again when last I heard. Alma is enjoying High School life.    Our table‐boy gave us a little shock a few day ago when he came in serving the food wearing a foreign felt hat of which he had just become the proud possessor. Chinese caps are worn in the house same as out and they look alright. The Chinese have not all learned to adopt the foreign custom along with the foreign hat.    With lots of love to All ‐ Clara

Wurvhangtsang(?) March 2nd, 1920

My Own Dear Clara:    Your two good letters were both received last night during the “welcome meeting”. We used to express superlative joy when in college by the simile “Just like a letter from home!” I know now better than I did then just how much that does express.   The meetings at Liumahtsang(?) were quite satisfactory on the whole, but we look for even more “lao‐veh” ones here as the town itself is much larger. We are located  in a Buddhist temple built by the Gwandung people for their special brand of Buddha. It is quite a large place and we are holding our services in the section used for the school. Our rooms flank the “assembly room.” On a milder day my room would be quite enjoyable as it is light and airy. It has the accompanying disadvantage of being fully upon to curious eyes, however, and on this market day those eyes are now few. It is likewise much noisier than my former quarters, but I trust that I am learning “in whatsoever state I am, therein to be content.” Am very thankful for one thing in particular, that you do not have to endure the same experience. A man can pull thru easily, but a woman would have quite a time, I’m afraid.   I had my first experience riding in a whu‐gan yesterday, and I trust it will be my last for a while. It rained so hard on Sunday night, and also all day Monday, that everyone urged me not to walk. I yielded to persuasions, and in company with Messrs. Whang and Wang embarked upon uncharted waters. With my oilsilk over my knees and my umbrella drawn down to my shoulders I tried to keep that fine mist and rain from soaking thru me. It blew in almost horizontally and the wind could get at me from every angle, not to speak of a few parabolic curves.    It is also rather difficult to sit upon a swinging half‐hammock of bamboo strips with an uncertain footrest that isn’t supposed to bear the weight of a man’s feet (my size) and one’s full weight is more precarious. Imagine

2.

My two men slipping hither and yon, and your devoted husband trying to hold up the oiled sheet with his left hand, his umbrella with his right, while with both elbows straining to maintain equilibrium upon two fish‐poles by pressing the latter against his sides (as a rider uses his knees when on horseback) lest he slide astride the neck of the foremost coolie when on a down grade, and you have a fair picture of a Japanese acrobat doing a “daring and death‐defying” stunt on the parallel bars.   Such a seat isn’t the most pleasant either. After four hours ride in that strained position, I warrant the mid‐equatorial region of my anatomy – spotted blue with cold, yet striped in red by the bamboo strips would have furnished an impressionistic artist with a suggestive study of the “bar‐stangled spanner south of the equator.”   I walked six li of the way and so arrived nearly an hour before the rest of the folks. They were all chilled to the bone and complaining loudly. I’m afraid our mild weather is postponed for a while. Just so the roads are dry by Saturday, I won’t begrudge the farmers the rain. My right hand is so stiff with cold that I can hardly write legibly. As it is market day however and the court is full of cotton merchants it seems inadvisable to have classes this morning and I have an extra hour. I think perhaps I’ll write a congratulatory letter to Earl Roadman on his professor‐ship at upper Iowa.   I have just finished a letter to Dr. Lewis made necessary by the one from Lochueujin. Thanks for sending it on to me. It required immediate action. We will now have three men  from Lochueujin and seven from Urilidien in the Bible School at Chengtu.   Am glad you are enjoying your callers; that you are not afraid to stay along; that you’ve had a foreign mail with good news, ‐ and all the rest of the good things contained in it. Cant’ say I’m enjoying

myself exactly, but I’d be willing to go thru a lot worse experience if I could feel that I were accomplishing something for the master, really worth while. I shall be mighty glad to get back home.   Mountains of love from          Lewis

Dearest Motherkin:   Today we complete the first half of our itinerary. Two weeks ago today, I left Tzechow. Since then we have visited twenty‐three places, and travelled 524 Chinese miles of which I have walked all but thirty. This has not been quite the feat it sounds, however, as we have never but thot [sic] once travelled more than 55 li a day or about nineteen miles. I guess I’d call a 19 mile walk quite a jaunt in America, though.   Clara joins me about ever second or third day as soon as she completes school examinations in the larger paces. This make quite a break in what would otherwise be rather a strain. She of course is moving in a chair and has the cook along with her to do the “heavy” work about avoid the necessity of eating Chinese food as often as I do. When we’ve together I eat with her, so in this way – there is quite a relief to me.   Yesterday we spent in Chinsuiha(?). It was a splendid Easter day, all bright sunshine. The fields are masses of yellow vape(?), or blossoming peas, purple, white or ‐, at this season of the year. Clara conceived the idea of getting up an Easter greeting card for the Tzechow WFMS, using pressed flowers from illustrations and impressed me, as the sailors say, to write verses to fit. We has Spring leaves and ferns, the violet, yellow vape(?) and voch(?)‐lilies, forget‐me‐nots, ‐ “sweet” peas, and roses, plum blossoms, and wheat, ‐ each of which had its own distinct Easter message. Will fix up one for you when we get back to paper and ink.   One of the most pleasant features of the day was the arrival of our coolie from Tzechow (he was several hours late due to a change in our itinerary) who brought us a fresh load of supplies, and a big bundle of letters. Clara received – home letters, and I – or we – also got two good letter from you – those of Jan 29th and Feb 6th. I would have enjoyed them more, had I not had to reproach myself for having caused you so much worry on our account due to my irregularity in writing. – you have received my apologies and reasons however, and I do hope your mind is at peace again. On no account should you worry about us. It was to help you get over that, that we have so strenuously urged you to spend a year with us and see how normal a life we live, ‐ not nearly so dangerous as in America where all folks are divided into two classes as the chauffeur says ‐ “the quick and the dead”. Boxer days are apparently over. America and Americans are the ideal of thinking Chinese out here. Instead of our having to ask them for protection and justice, they come to us. And we do not live with the Lynch family in Africa (no wonder she

wanted to change her name before going to the land “where the ne‐gros.” Unless he is presenting extraordinary incidents as commonplace, our condition is paradise compared to them. Nothing worse than centipedes, lice, and fleas. No poisonous snakes that I have heard of. However, this is not for publication, and I surely admire your good judgement [sic] in thus “neglecting your duty” toward us. There is not one tenth the hardship we expected when we came out here, and not a fiftieth of that which you imagine. Above all things don’t endow us with halos!   I’d like to read that Delineator story just to see how thrilling it can be. Clara say that nothing like that can scare her – long.   There are no cases of “flu” in our section of the country so far as I have learned. Tho’ we haven’t six trained nurses in Tzechow  at present, we have enough to give us plenty first aid until a doctor can get over from Tzeliutsing one day away, or from Chengtu, 3 days away. We don’t anticipate any early need for such attention however. Reading your letters about Hazel and Dan, or Muzzy and Grandpa, it

Page 27: s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com...••e~DI an1 the.e ia the Cor or di.lr.m•••re 11 el •• a bauia poa wbioh to ur,e tbom to ako ~reator tri..d a ill aolt-suPPort ror the oomin(

seems to us as though we are living in a healthier country that you folks are. It is for us to worry, not for you.   We are glad to learn from the later letters and cards that Dan was not prevented from taking his examinations. Of course he will pass, though I wonder if it really pays him to include Sundays among his work days.   Thanks to you and Lucile for the Rhodehever song: it sounds good to me. Guess I’ll have to send for the rest of his collection of solos in that 25₵ folio. Didn’t know he was publishing them in that form. If I went back in the States I’d want the duet collection, too, to sing with Lucille. Since Dr. Liljestrand moved to Chengtu, we don’t have much music but the six records on our Stuart around our ranch. Haven’t had time to move than get my lips to the sore stage in cornet practice since I got that a year ago or more. Am afraid my habits are fixed and my work cut out to such an extent that the cornet might be called a poor investment.   I’ve received my 20 yr. endowment policy in the Methodist Ministers Insurance and relief association for $4000.00. Costs me $180.00 in the beginning. It pays 4 ½ percent so it seemed to me to be as good an investment

as I could make of a year’s savings just now. Since receiving the policy, we have received word indirectly from the Board of Foreign Missions that our salary is to be raised $200.00 per year, making it $2500 Mex. That will provide nicely for our premium you see.   Are you sure we haven’t told you about the cow? We did buy one but kept it only a week. Chinese servants are the – on “graft.” It looked as if the – of measuring out feed, testing milk, churning butter, and all of that sort of thing would take too large a shove of our time, not to speak of the wear on our dispositions, so we proposed to the cook that we will sell it to him. We would give him the pasture rights on our hill and pay him ten cents Mex. a day for enough milk and cream to supply our wants for milk and butter. The ten cents per day would apply on the price of the cow. He agreed so both of us are benefitted. He has a surplus of milk which he sells to Chinese customers, and so with the pasture allowed him, feeds two cows and calves, and hires a man to care for them. The only fag we have is the occasional testing, to be sure there aren’t any catfish in it.   Don’t worry about duty on packages to us. We occasionally have to pay ½ of 1% on the value in Mexican of goods from America, but it never amounts to very much. We probably get even with you on what you pay on the stuff we sent you. The box hasn’t arrived yet so far as we know. Sorry you couldn’t register it, however, so that it could be traced if it fails to be delivered the latter part of this month when parcel – shipments will begin to arrive.    Am afraid we can’t afford to go to the movies when we get back home. I understand that 10₵ movies are a thing of the Stone age now.   Of course you had a good visit with Aunt Cora. Does Muzzy still like to be surprised as well as she use to like to do the surprising? Try the break on West China, Muzzy!   That was surely quite an honor which Dr. Bartle and Dr. Scholes paid Lucille on behalf of the choir. We are very proud of her! Glad to see by the program that she has gotten back her nerve for solo work too.

4.

The dress‐samples are very pretty. High prices don’t seem to interfere with that. I’ve got some new clothes too. I sent my grey coat which I had made the year before I graduated at Boston, and the trousers to the two‐piece suit which I had made while at Alpha, up to Chengtu to the Chinese tailor to be

cleaned, turned and re‐lined. The trousers look like new, the coat is much improved thought the upper pocket is now on the right hand side, and the button holes had to be sewn together in the change. It only cost me $7.50 Mex. or $3.75 US money, and will be fine for road use and the cooler days on the mountains until furlough time as I think it paid me.   A letter from Mr. Manly says that their son, Gordon, is to stay with the Yosts in Colorado and that Mrs. Manly will probably return to China in August. I’m afraid you’ll not get to come with her after all, if she come that early.   Soon General Conference will open in Des Moines. I am sending in my subscription to the Conference Daily by this mail, as I expect there will be some interesting work done there this year.   Am wondering whether you couldn’t learn from Dr. Jas. Buch at Dixon just when he and Dsang Lin‐gao from Tzechow will be there (in case they can not stop off in Canton at any time) and Harry motor you and Lucille over there to visit with them all some day. I think that would be more practical than the Des Moines scheme, as they will be worked to death there.   Well this looks about as much like hen‐scratching as like a letter, but a pencil is worse than a pen in my hand, and I’ve been trying to write extra fast while I have the chance to get off a note to you for this evening’s mail. I walked fourteen miles this morning, and this is the fourth letter I’ve written since I arrived. I’ll be mighty glad when our “Corona” arrives, so that we’ll have something for road use. The Board is kicking because my last Quarterly letter to Magee was over due. But when I have to make three copies each time, I can’t do it on the road without a typewriter and I’m on the road over half of the time.   Love to all,        Lewis and Clara
