WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Skill Level: All Skill Levels Welcome! In this demonstration you will see Bobby dye, antique and finish a western floral tooled piece of leather. Through the use of close-up cameras, he shares the techniques he uses to produce the finishes he is known for. The demonstration will include: discussion about leather, tooling, oiling the leather, preparing the leather for color, dyeing the background, dyeing the edges, applying Fiebing’s paste antique and final finish coats. Throughout the process he will discuss the tools and methods required for each application. Bobby will also discuss the use of alternative products and methods for comparison purposes. Time permitting, there will be an open question & answer session at the end of the demonstration, where he will answer questions regarding any subject which may interest the class. This is a popular class which fills up quickly! Materials donated by Hermann Oak Leather Company, The Fiebing Company and Bob Park Custom Leather.

Student Should Bring: Note taking materials and a camera.(Bobby’s direct contact info: 602-999-3099 or [email protected]).

Bob Park: Antiquing & Dyeing Demonstration Bob PARK

$95ROZET, Kortestraat 16, Arnhem

Skill Level: All Skill Levels Welcome!Undoubtedly difficult to master, the swivel knife is the most important tool we employ. Its use is the foundation for every style and type of leather carving. With that in mind, Bobby presents a workshop dedicated completely to the attributes of the swivel knife and the techniques that he employs with it. The instruction will cover everything from basic fundamentals to specialty knives, proper fitting and grip, blade selection and knife manufacturers. And with the aid of close-up cameras streaming live to a large screen, he will demonstrate the techniques used for cutting tooling patterns, performing finish cuts and when ‘free-handing’ decorative Finger Carvings. The discussion will cover line priority, cutting sequences, how to practice, tracing patterns, casing leather and most importantly, sharpening and stropping! Students will learn the fundamentals of making a basic cut and have the opportunity to practice cutting one of his tooling patterns as well as a Finger Carving pattern. As this is not a “project”, there will be no emphasis or pressure to complete the practice patterns. Bob’s focus will be strictly on evaluating each student’s skill level and tailoring comments to help them improve. Time permitting, there will be an open question & answer session at the end of the workshop where Bob will gladly answer questions regarding any subject which may interest the class. Leather donated by Hermann Oak Leather Company.

Student Should Bring: Sharp swivel knives, strop, tracing stylus, small sponge and/or small water spray bottle, sharpening equipment (if you have it), note taking materials, and a camera. Bobby’s book, Creating Western Floral Designs, will be for sale during class.

$440ROZET, Kortestraat 16, Arnhem

Skill Level: All Skill Levels Welcome! While there is a lot of reference material on how to learn the basics of floral tooling, there is very little designed to help take it to the next level. This workshop is designed to do just that. In general, topics will include casing the leather, carving solutions, swivel knife and stamping tool selection. I will talk about a variety of the techniques that I employ on my own projects which are not commonly found in much of the existing instructional literature, such as creating texture and highlights in consideration of the final finishes to be used. And with the aid of close-up cameras and a large screen, each student will have the opportunity to observe these techniques, first-hand. Discussion will also include the importance of the cutting sequence as well as when not to cut, tooling sequences, petal lifting and undercutting, back-beveling and the use of modeling tools. The class will have an opportunity in the afternoon session to apply these techniques on a practice floral tooling pattern. As this is not a project, there will be no emphasis or pressure to complete the practice patterns. My Focus will be strictly on evaluating each student’s skill level and tailoring comments to help them improve. Time permitting, there will be an open question & answer session at the end of the workshop where Bob will gladly answer questions regarding any subject which may interest the class. Registrants/students will receive a tool list via e-mail prior to the workshop. Leather donated by Hermann Oak Leather Company.

Student Should Bring: Stamping tools, stamping surface, swivel knife, strop, maul/mallet of choice, tracing stylus, small sponge or water spray bottle, note pad & pencil, camera. Bobby’s book, Creating Western Floral Designs, will be for sale during class.

Mohair Cinch Making

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

King of the Jungle Kathy FLANAGAN

Skill Level: All Skill Levels Welcome!King of the Jungle is a great class if you’re looking to improve your hairing techniques. An African lion has numerous hair lengths. To create the most realistic hair, the “one hair at a time” technique is the most valuable. You will also learn how to get the depth, which is so important in realistic carvings. Painting is included in this class. Learn about the importance of shadowing and contrast to make your lion come alive. Come join me for the most fun type of learning available. Supplies donated by Hermann Oak Leather Company and Renia GmbH.

Student Should Bring: Styluses (normal and smooth point), modeling spoon, swivel knife and strop, bevelers and matting tools (smooth and checkered, various sizes), pear shaders (smooth, various sizes), undercut beveler, F895, F902 or F902/-02, paint brushes (round, small- to medium-sized), mallet, stamping stone and a weight to hold down the leather (like a shot bag).

Mohair Cinch Making Aurélie AVESQUE-JOUAN

Skill Level: Beginner/IntermediateParticipants will learn how to string and design a standard pattern (half diamonds and bars) on a 17-strand straight, single-layer western mohair cinch (up to 32”). Participants can choose the colors for their cinch from available colors. They will learn how to estimate the length of mohair needed for any straight-tied mohair cinch regarding the finished length and/or the number of strands. We will also see some specific patterns like the “checkerboard” and/or “toothpick” and how to start a bi-color body cinch.Special explanations will be made regarding the importance of the technical aspects and their impact on the horse, as well as the fitting of a cinch (length/width) and its impact on the horse. All supplies (mohair and hardware) and tools (frame, scissors, needle) are provided by EQUIMOHAIR and participants will leave with their own cinch. We will review the different kind of hardware available on the market. If the students are done with their cinch before the end of the 2 days, we can discuss other subjects (ropers/English cinches, or a specific topic that interests them) or, if there is enough time, they can learn and make a dressage English girth (80 cm max) {with an extra 45€ fee for the additional materials}.Workshop is provided in English and/or French. Upon completion, students will be able to “autonomously” build a tied cinch and will be able to make mohair tack for their own need or for business.Mohair is hypoallergenic, comfortable and breathable for the horse. Laughing Kookaburra Kathy FLANAGAN

Skill Level: All Skill Levels Welcome!Have you ever done any plug embossing? This technique is a great way to make your carvings pop...literally. The Kookaburra, a king fisher of Australia, is best done with a plug made with two layers. This provides the carving with enough depth to give it an excellent 3-dimensional appearance. The bird also provides different kinds of feathers to sharpen your feathering skills. On top of all that, learn to paint with a dry brushing method that makes your Kookaburra come alive! Supplies donated by Hermann Oak Leather Company and Renia GmbH.

Student Should Bring: Styluses (normal and smooth point), modeling spoon, swivel knife and strop, bevelers and matting tools (smooth and checkered, various sizes), pear shaders (smooth, various sizes), E375, F895, F902, paint brushes (small round), mallet, stamping stone, sharp scissors/knife, skiving knife and a weight to hold down the leather (like a shot bag).

Motorcycle Seat Bobber Style, Miniature Armin DOBSTETTER

Skill Level: IntermediateIn this workshop, you will build up a miniature motorcycle seat in the Bobber Style. First, Armin will show you how to build the base plate, add the foam and make the seat waterproof. This is followed by cutting leather for the top and the bottom, tracing the design onto the seat, and carving and stamping the design. Then, the top leather will be formed on the seat and glued in place, and the edges will be pressed, cut and rounded, then prepared for sewing. Armin will show you his methods for rounding, slicking and finishing the edges. While the seat is drying, you will carve the background leather on which the seat will be mounted. You’ll finish by adding color and mounting the seat onto the background leather. (It is possible to enlarge these patterns to build up a life-sized motorcycle seat.) Stitchers for this workshop provided by Leather Machine Company.

Multifunctional Backpack Danielle ROOSSIEN

Skill Level: IntermediateIn this workshop we will be making a complete, multifunctional backpack in two days. You will make the full backpack by hand out of three different types of leather. The pattern will be provided and will show all the holes and cuts that need to be made. The techniques we will use are all basic, but combined, it will be a bit more intermediate, because it is a lot of work. This workshop involves mainly cutting, measuring and stitching, while working neatly and in detail is required. You will be able to make a fully handmade bag in two days using mainly standard techniques, but by combining them in this multifunctional bag we will learn a lot about construction and assembly. One of the most important aspects is thinking about the right working order and preparing your materials and tools. You will have the choice to stitch or braid the edges and there will be multiple leather colors to choose from to make it “your” bag. This bag will look quite simple in the end, but the design is rather ingenious. Using a single strap, you will be able to turn the backpack into a shoulder bag or hand bag. While using it as a backpack, the same single strap will make sure the bag is totally locked and no break-ins can occur. If you have never touched leather before, this workshop will be a difficult one. When you know a little you should be fine; you might not be able to finish the stitching completely in class, but you can easily finish the job at home. Some materials donated by Hermann Oak Leather Company, Tandy Leather and Echt Leer – William Kooy.

Student Should Bring: Rotary cutter, scalpel, skiving/head knife, strop, swivel knife, mallet, bevelers (regular and small), your favorite backgrounder(s), diamond hole chisel 5/32 (or 1/8) [or awl if you are used to working with it], 1/8 lacing chisel (if you are braiding), stitching pony (if you have one), round drive punch (size 4 [3.9 mm]), rotary drive punch (if you have one), oblong punch (size 11 [25mm x 4mm]), wing divider, scratch awl, edge slicker, edge beveler, groove puller/v-gouge, an old toothbrush, cutting board and stamping stone (see page 4 for traveling board/stone combo).

The Roots of Design with Bigfoot Serge “Bigfoot” VOLKEN

Skill Level: All Skill Levels Welcome! It’s about being creative as opposed to being able to draw by nature. Just because you can’t draw doesn’t mean you can’t be creative – quite the contrary! Add another facet to the art of decorating leather, thus widening the spectrum of applied arts on leather. Have some leather work projects that speak to a wider range of people than the usual crowd. My goal is to give you a tool box that is useful for thousands of future projects instead of making something pretty to bring back home.
