ustralia will catch another glimpse of the genius that is Marc Marquez this weekend as the Spaniard arrives at Phillip Island as the youngest ever back-to-back MotoGP world champion.

The Honda rider is threatening to completely rewrite the history books having only burst onto the premier class scene just last year.

In just 33 races, the 21-year-old has claimed 28 podiums, 17 victories and the last two world championships, stunning even the most informed experts.

While surprising the paddock by storming to an unprecedented title in his maiden season last year, Marquez has well and truly stamped his authority on the championship this year, winning the title with three races remaining.

There was also a period when it seemed he would go the entire season unbeaten after storming to 10 consecutive wins, a feat rarely witnessed in any form of motorsport.

This weekend provides a rare chance to just watch a true master at work and although he has no reason to push hard, you can bet he will be desperate to add

yet another win to his glowing resume. While the premier class will grab the majority headlines,

the home crowd will have plenty of local talent to back.Townsville teenager Jack Miller is fast becoming

one of the sport’s rising stars having led the way in the Moto3 category for the majority of the season.

In recent weeks the young Australian has lost his advantage, which has coincided with news that he will make the giant leap from Moto3 to the premier class next year. With a move to LCR Honda looming, he will be desperate to reignite his title hopes on home soil.

Broc Parkes heads the Australian contingent in the premier class for Paul Bird Motorsport, while Ant West, Aiden Wagner, Ollie Simpson and Remy Gardner, son of legend Wayne, are all set to perform in front of a jubilant Aussie crowd.

he records continue to tumble as Marc Marquez tightens his grip on motorcycle racing’s world stage.

The dimunitive Spaniard may be small in stature but he is a giant in motorsport already at the age of 21. Last weekend the mercurial Marquez wrapped up his second MotoGP world championship in Motegi,Japan with three races of the season remaining.

Achieving the feat eclipsed yet another record with Marquez becoming the youngest ever back-to-back world champion by claiming his second consecutive crown aged just 21.

Britain’s nine-time world champion Mike Hailwood had previously held the record

Making his Marc – Marquez on his way to becoming the greatestT

when he won consecutive 500cc world titles in 1962-1963 at the age of 23.

Motorcycle grand prix racing has produced a wealth of superstars over the decades from the great Giacomo Agostini, John Surtees and Hailwood, to the modern day heroes Mick Doohan, Eddie Lawson and Valentino Rossi.

Marquez’s confirmation of his talent by securing a second consecutive title in such dominant fashion has led to experts questioning if he could go on to become the greatest.

When looking at statistics it hard not to sit bolt upright and take notice of the numbers.

In just two seasons, Marquez has more than left his mark leaving the rest of the

paddock scratching their heads. In 33 premier class races the 21-year-old has won 17 times and has only finished outside of the podium on five occasions, equating to an 85 percent podium conversion rate.

Becoming the youngest ever grand prix winner in only his second attempt certainly confirmed a burgeoning talent but he has since gone on to astound both the public and experts with his skill on two wheels.

Clinching the title in his maiden season in the top tier was an incredible feat but the mark of a superstar is his ability to continue to impress and that is just what Marquez has achieved this season.

A run of 10 consecutive wins this year at times made a mockery of his opponents despite the field including seven-time

world champion Rossi and double world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Such has been Marquez’s dominance the thought he could complete the entire season unbeaten was tabled, thus confirming the sport is currently being controlled by a true superstar.

Fortunately for the rest of the field they have found a way to beat him this season but it remains to be seen how his run of success can be stopped.

Having now eclipsed the Hailwood’s record of youngest back-to-back champion its is interesting to compare the two riders. Hailwood went on to record nine world titles in 500cc,350cc and 250cc classes during his short career from 1958-1967.

It is fair to say that although a full season consists almost double the amount of races compared to championship campaigns during Hailwood’s career, the two share some symmetry revealing a glimpse into the future for Marquez.

At this rate if Marquez continues to produce his current conversion rate he could easily go on to match Hailwood’s nine world titles.

Perhaps what is striking fear into the minds of the remaining riders on the grid is that Marquez still has room to improve on his already impressive skill set.

"I feel where we improved more is experience and of trying to manage

situations, to ride the bike well. I had less mistakes, but still mistakes, and we can still improve,”said Marquez after winning a second consecutive world title.

“It is difficult to say or believe that you already have two world titles but of course I want more and more and more.

“For a rider it is never easy and we need to enjoy this moment. We will see next year.

“I was really focused on pre-season; I was happy and focused to try to manage the situation and, with more experience, everything was easier.

“When you are riding a circuit, you already have a reference. But like we see from the second part of the season I am still learning and in some situations I still need to improve.”

While Marquez will bask in the glory of a second title, the hunger for success remains ever present ahead of this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, having been disqualified from last year’s event for misjudging a pit stop.

“We can relax a little, but not too much,” added Marquez.

“I still want to win races and finish the season on a high. Phillip Island was a bit of a nightmare for me last year so I have a score to settle.

“I like the track, so let’s hope the weather is nice so we can really enjoy the weekend.”

Its Miller Time – Jack aiming to get his title bid back on track

Its been a whirlwind year for Townsville’s Jack Miller as the young Australian prepares to step up to the big time having secured a lucrative MotoGP deal with LCR Honda.

The 19-year-old began his third season in the Moto3 category eyeing a tilt at the title but is now in possession of a far greater prize by joining the sport’s elite in the premier class next season.

Miller couldn’t have wished for a better start to season by securing back-to-back Moto3 victories at the opening round at Qatar, followed by a triumph at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas.

Maintaining the lead in the championship with a string of strong results caught the attentions of Japanese giant Honda.

After much speculation the result turned out to be a good one for Aussie bike fans with Miller putting pen to paper on a three-year deal to join factory backed outfit LCR Honda.

While such news can cause the mind to drift, the teenager reamins focussed on securing his primary objective, despite losing ground in the Moto3 title racein the last two rounds.

Miller, who hopes to shine in front of his home crowd, is 25 points behind leader Alex Marquez.

“My life has changed a lot over the last 12 months,” Miller told Speedcafe.com.

“I just have to remember I’m a scrub from Townsville who rides motorbikes for a living. Its not too hard to keep my feet on the ground.

“Its been nice to lead the Moto3 championship all the way through until the last two races. It has been a dream come true.

“Now I have finally have the machinery to deliver the job I always thought I could do.

“We definitely need 25 points we have been looking strong for it in the last couple of races and we just haven’t had that luck we needed. Its the same goal as every weekend.

Miller’s move has not gone unnoticed by some of the biggest names with multiple grand prix winner Dani Pedrosa offering advice to the rising star.

“For sure it is a big jump and he will have to manage many things at the beginning that he is not used too. But MotoGP has many people around that can help and advise him,” Pedrosa told Speedcafe.com.

“He will be a good rider in MotoGP which is great for Australians.

“My advice is to take your time because in MotoGP you pay a little bit more for mistakes. Not that the crash is expensive the mistake is expensive for yourself.”

Meanwhile, Miller is not the only Australian looking to impress in front of his home crowd with a host of riders set to compete in Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP.

In the premier class Broc Parkes has been a perennial back marker throughout the season on the Paul Bird Motorsport but will hoping to add to his points tally at home.

One rider keen to make a strong impression is Queenslander Aidan Wagner who has scooped a plum wildcard ride with the top Marc VDS Team in Moto2.

The 20-year-old currently competes in the Australasian Superbike Championship in the Supersport class, but he will now face up against some of the world’s best young talents.

“This is a big chance. I’m stoked a team like this has taken me on. Its going to be really tough this weekend but I am just going to ride my arse off and see what I can do,” Wagner told Speedcafe.com.

Veteran Ant West, who scored an emotional win at Assen this year, will also be competing in Moto2 alongside 16-year-old Max Croker from Newcastle.

Red Bull Rookies rider Olly Simpson from Adelaide and Remy Gardner, the son of the 1987 champion Wayne Gardner, have also secured wildcard rides to compete in the Moto3 class alongside Miller.

“This is a huge chance its a big jump from Red Bull rookies to here so I have just got to try my hardest and see what I can do,” Simpson told Speedcafe.com.

Phillip Island, the self-styled home of Australian motorsport, is steeped in motor racing tradition, with the first car races having been held there on public roads in the 1920s. The first motorcycle races took place in 1931 and a permanent track was built in 1956. The circuit fell into disrepair during the late 70s and early 80s until it was bought in 1985 and given a AUS $5m facelift. MotoGP returned in 1989 and 1990 before becoming a regular fixture once more from 1997 onwards.

The Phillip Island circuit is blessed with breathtaking scenery and beautiful ocean views and, as one of the fastest, most fluid, tracks on the calendar, it continues to provide some of the most spectacular racing in the MotoGP season.
