Monthly Monday Mini-Retreat

Ladies of the parish, you are invited to come and

participate in our Monthly, Monday, Mini-Retreat on

January 20th in the parish residence, beginning at 10:30.

Our focus will be friendship, with God and one another. You

are welcome to bring a snack to share, and we will end our

time together with the noon Rosary.

A NOTE FROM SISTERS OF CHARITY

Dear Rev. Poff,

We received checks from the Propagation of Faith

for $11,597.04 that was the result of

the generosity of parishes we visit-

ed in the Indianapolis Archdiocese,

which includes St. Mary Parish.

We are most grateful to

you and your parishioners for being part of this generous gift.

Please relay our message of gratitude. It was a pleasure for

Charlotte Hazas, SCN Associate to share Sister of Charity of

Nazareth stories with your parish Community. Because of

our partnership with your Parish, we can better assist those in

need.

Know that the St. Mary Parish Community will be

remembered as our staff gathers daily at 1:00pm to pray for

those who share so generously with those where we minister.

Gratefully,

Sr. Anne Magruder, SCN

Let us pray for deceased relatives and

friends especially

Earl Naville Sr.

Husband of Bonnie, father of

Patti Kirchgessner, Jerry, Jeff, John,

Jason and Julian Naville, brother of

Herman Naville and Elizabeth Blessing

that Christ will welcome them into His

Father’s presence.

ANGEL TREE 2019

Thank you, Saint Mary Navilleton

parishioners, for making the season even

brighter for our neighbors - all of the

Angel Tree angels were adopted! In fact,

it took two very full vans to deliver all the

gifts to Hope Southern Indiana. "For it is in

giving that we receive.” - St. Francis of

Assisi.

Reflection on the Baptism of the Lord

The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives four

reasons for the Incarnation, why God became man in Jesus

Christ. The third reason is “to be our model of holiness.” All of

Jesus’ words and actions model for us what we ought to do.

He also shows us how we’re meant to be. Jesus’ baptism

ought to remind us of our own baptism and of the

importance of baptism in the Christian life.

The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of

our Trinitarian identity. When we are bap-

tized, we stand in solidarity with Christ,

bathed in the waters he sanctified. There,

the Father proclaims our adoption into the family of God.

“‘This is my beloved son [this is my beloved daughter], with

whom I am well pleased.’” And the Spirit, too, descends. We

are filled with the Spirit’s grace and power to continue

Christ’s mission on earth. We received these gifts in the

sacrament, and they continue to dwell within us through

sanctifying grace. We can — and should — invite God to stir

up these graces of our baptism and consider them in our

own lives.

Does Christ feel like a distant relative two thousand

years in the past? Or do you see him as someone who can

be encountered here and now? Ask yourself where you find

your sense of dignity and worth. Do you still search for it in

success, social status, and selfish pursuits? Or are you able to

rest in being a beloved child of God? Remember, baptism

gives us a call and a charge to change the world. Do you

pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you? Or are you so focused

on your own life that you miss the mission? This week, let’s do

as Jesus did. Let’s live in our baptism!

Ministry Message

From The United States

Catholic Catechism For Adults

The Catechism notes that “the Magisterium of the Pastors

of the Church in moral matters is ordinarily exercised in

catechesis and preaching, with the help of the works of

theologians and spiritual authors” (CCC, no. 2033). In the

task of teaching and applying the vision and practice of

Christian morality, the Church relies on the dedication of

pastors and the studies of theologians, as well as the

contributions of all people of goodwill. (cf. CCC, no.

2038).

Respect Life Topics

What to Do When a Friend is Considering Abortion

Reassure her that she is not alone. When a woman is

facing a difficult pregnancy, the reaction of the first

person she tells tends to set the tone for her decision-

making. How do we respond in a loving way that is life-

affirming for both her and her baby? First, prioritize

listening over speaking. Ask her about her feelings,

thoughts, values, beliefs, and wants. When her story is fully

shared, it is your turn to provide factual information, in a

loving and caring way. Encourage her. Help her set goals

that extend beyond her due date to help her see life

beyond her pregnancy. Provide practical support. Pray

with her, offering Christ’s love at a crucial life-saving and

life-defining moment.

Wisdom is the first and highest gift of the Holy Spirit

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

[Wisdom] is the perfection of faith. Through wisdom, we

come to value properly those things which we believe

through faith. The truths of Christian belief are more

important than the things of this world, and wisdom helps

us to order our relationship to the created world properly,

loving Creation for the sake of God, rather than for its own

sake. "Where faith is a simple knowledge of the articles of

Christian belief, wisdom goes on to a certain divine

penetration of the truths themselves." The better we

understand those truths, the more we value them

properly. Thus wisdom, the Catholic Encyclopedia notes,

"by detaching us from the world, makes us relish and love

only the things of heaven." Through wisdom, we judge the

things of the world in light of the highest end of man—the

contemplation of God.

Food for the Soul

Today is both the last Sunday of the

season of Christmas and the first Sunday

of Ordinary Time. We need to go forward

through the weeks of the year as women

and men on whom the baptismal water is

never dry, as those who will work for justice,

for right relationships with God and with one

another, as people who will be impartial in our

love and gently generous in our service.
