Third Grade Math Summer Packet

Welcome to 3rd Grade!

Dear Parents & Guardians,

In order to ensure your child retains all the second grade Math concepts learned and continue practicing them, it is important that they complete this summer packet. This summer packet will be counted as their first test grade in Math.

You have two options for completing the packet:

1.) If you have access to a printer, you may print the packet and put the answers on the packet by bubbling in the correct answer. All work will be on the printed pages.

2.) If you do not have access to a printer, you will put your answers on paper. We have attached a sample of how your paper should look so that it is clear, neat and organized. All work will be on the paper.

Along with completing the packet, your child will need to go on the following website to practice math fluency in addition, subtraction and begin multiplication. Attached is a log for you to keep track of their scores on the website. It is recommended your child go on the website for about 30 minutes a week.

How to Organize your Paper:

Title your paper with “Math Summer Packet” Put your First AND last

name on each paper

Put the page number from the TOP right side of the packet.

Number the questions – if the question does not require work like #s 1-2 then just copy the correct answer. If the problems require you to do work like #s 3-5, do the work and put the final answer next to it. We NEED to see all work!

ELA Summer Packet

Directions: Below you will see a list of the activities to complete for your ELA Summer Packet. Remember that this is going to be your first couple of grades when your third grade school year begins.

1. Read the e-book provided by Newark Public Schools. The book will be handed out to in person students and virtual students were provided a schedule to come and pick up their book at the school. The title of the book is Xochitl and the Flowers by Jorge Argueta. There will be a test based on the book when the school year begins.

2. After reading the book, Xochitl and the Flowers by Jorge Argueta, complete the following 3 activities: In Xochitl and the Flowers, Xochitl and her family are so excited when they rent an apartment that has a yard in the back. Write a few paragraphs to explain in detail how the Flores family‛s new backyard comes to life. Create a colorful, creative brochure for the Flores family‛s flower shop. In the brochure list all of the types of flowers that are sold at the shop. Include a description and a picture of each flower. Also include the types of flower arrangements that are offered at the shop. Remember, on pages 4 and 5, Xochitl thinks about the types of flower arrangements her family created when they lived in El Salvador. Include pictures and write descriptions of the flower arrangements, too. You can draw and color your flowers or print them out. Either way, make your work colorful and creative so people will want to buy flowers from the Flores family! Beautify your neighborhood like Xochitl and her family did! Create beautiful paper flowers and place them around your home or neighborhood. You can even give some as gifts. Write a letter to Xochitl telling her how you beautified your neighborhood and how it made you and the community feel. Click here to see how you can create amazing paper flowers!

3. Complete the attached grammar worksheets. You can either print them to write on them, or open the PDF and write on the PDF electronically and save it on your computer, or you can complete the work on a separate sheet of paper.

Third Grade Science Summer Packet Welcome to 3rd Grade!

For Science, you will be reading about two topics that we will be studying in more detail

throughout the year; Forces/Motion and Weather. The short books will give you a great

foundation for 3rd grade Science. The work from this packet will also count as your first

assessment grades. After reading each book, you will respond to the questions on the

“respond to reading” page. Your responses should be completed on notebook paper. (Please

follow the example Journal page. There is also a short passage you will read and then respond

to a few comprehension questions) Lastly, you will need to complete a weather graph for the

month of August. You may print out the question page and graph to complete or you can

respond on notebook paper as well.

Fastest·Moving Animals Can you run fast? Not as fast as a cheetah! The

cheetah is a very fast animal. It can run very fast for short distances.

The speed of a cheetah is about 114 kilometers (71 miles) per hour. Speed tells how fast something is moving. Kilometers (or miles) per hour tell how far something travels in one hour. That is faster than many cars on a highway!

The fastest cars in the world are called hypercars. They can go more than 434 kilometers (270 miles) per hour. They are so fast they need help to stay on the ground. They have special parts to keep them on the ground.

8

The fastest train in the world is a maglev train. A maglev train can go more than 483 kilometers (300 miles) per hour. Powerful magnets move the train about a track. This track is called a guideway. The whole train floats above the guideway. That's one quiet train ride!

The fastest jet plane is the SR-71 Blackbird. It canfly at 4,023 kilometers (2,500 miles> per hour. It flies very high above Earth. The air is thin and cold that high. The SR-71 Blackbird has two pilots. They wearspecial suits. The suits protect them.

+

Chapt r 3

Fastest-Moving People People can also move fast. In 2009, Usain Bolt

became the fastest person in the world. He ran 100 meters in 9.58 seconds!

In 2009, Carmelita Jeter became the fastest woman in the world. She ran 100 meters in 10.64 seconds.

In baseball, pitchers throw the ball very fast. In 2011, Aroldis Chapman threw the fastest pitch ever. That pitch was 105.1 miles per hour!

Going for 106!

Chapter 1

What Is Weather? Is weather a light breeze or a strong wind? Is it

pouring rain or a sunny sky? Weather is all of these things. Weather is heat, water, and wind. It can be hot or cold. It can be wet or dry.

Sometimes the weather is rainy.

Changing Weather Weather is always changing. It can be cloudy in

f the morning and sunny in the afternoon. The Sun ·

j helps the weather change. Heat from the Sun warmsl the air. It can also warm water in puddles, lakes,j rivers, and oceans.

3

- --.

Water keeps moving from the ground to the air and back again.

When the Sun heats water, water turns into tiny drops. The drops rise high into the sky. They become cold. They turn into clouds. After a while, the clouds fill with water. Drops of water fall to earth. They become rain, snow, sleet, or hail. The Sun heats up the water again.

4

Chapter 2

Thun, derstorms Sometimes, warm, wet air meets cold, dry air.

When this happens, blue skies turn gray. White, puffy clouds turn into long, dark clouds. Thunder rumbles. Then rain comes. This is what happens in a thunderstorm.

;J

Plants need rain to live. Too much rain is bad for them, though. A lot of rain can cause a flood. Strong winds and rain can harm people, too.

Heavy rains can cause a flood.

Lightning Sometimes you see lightning in a storm. Lightning

is a spark of electricity. It looks like a flash of light.

Lightning can be dangerous. If lightning strikes a tree, the tree's branches might break. Lightning can also cause fires!

This tree was struck by lightning.

;j

In some thunderstorms, strong winds spin in a circle. When this happens, tornadoes may form.

A tornado begins on land or water. It is shaped like a funnel. Its winds are strong and fast. The funnel shape can be made out of clouds, dust, dirt, and water.

These spinning winds blow very fast! They can blow more than 500 kilometers (about 300 miles) an hour. They are very dangerous. A tornado's winds can pick up cars. It can break windows and walls. A tornado can even pull up a large tree!

A tornado's winds are so strong 1t can even move cars.

Chapter 4

Hurricanes Hurricanes are like tornadoes. Both are made

of spinning winds. A hurricane's winds are not as fast, though. Hurricanes are also much bigger than tornadoes.

Hurricanes begin above warm oceans. Winds start blowing. Then they begin to spin. Winds are fastest near the middle of the hurricane. Some winds can blow more than 250 kilometers (155 miles) an hour!

Most hurricanes come with a lot of rain. Sometimes they cause floods. A hurricane moves across miles of water. It travels farther than a tornado. When a hurricane reaches land, the winds begin to die out.

This damage was caused by a hurricane.

12

Most weather is not harmful. Many days are calm and sunny. On these days, you can play outside. You can take a walk. You can ride your bike. You can enjoy the weather! Summarize

Summarize Bad Weather. Use important details. Your graphic organizer may help you.

Text Evidence 0 1. How do you know that Bad Weather is

nonfiction? GENRE

2. Read the book with a partner. Compare atornado and a hurricane. Fill in a Venn diagramas you do this. COMPARE AND CONTRAST

3. Think about what you know about antonymsThen figure out the antonym of light on page 2. ANTONYMS

4. Keep a weather journal. Observe and writeabout the weather. Compare the weather on twodifferent days. WRITE ABOUT READING

Read the passage to answer the questions. The water cycle is the way that water moves all around the earth It

doesn't have a beginning and it never really stops It keeps going like a big

circle New water 1s not created It Just takes different forms as 1t moves

through the water cycle

Water on the surface of the ocean, lakes, or rivers will evaporate due to

the heat from the sun When this evaporation occurs, the water turns into

water vapor When this vapor water Joins together with a lot of other water

vapor, clouds are formed Clouds are caused by condensation, or water

vapor turning back into a liquid. These clouds move around the earth with the

weather When the clouds become so full of water, the water drops back to

the earth as precipitation This precipitation can be 1n the form of rain, sleet,

snow, hail, and freezing rain. When the water falls back to earth it may flow

back into the ocean, feed a garden, or be snow on a mountain After this

collection, the water will evaporate and the whole cycle will begin again.
