WHS Cricket

Wanganui High School Students Dana Garrett, Sam Roebuck and Caleb Greene have been active Junior Coaches for Cricket Wanganui coach-ing 7-10 year old age groups on a Friday Night. They have started formalising their coaching by completing the first stage of the New Zealand Cricket Coaching Qualification. Cricket Wanganui Operations Manag-er, Dilan Raj, said he is impressed by the Wanganui High School student’s work ethic, commitment to coaching the juniors and contribution to the community. “There are a number of WHS’ stu-dents that give of their time, but it is this commitment to better themselves as coaches that will truly make a dif-ference not only in the playing of their junior cricketers but also in their own lives towards becoming responsi-ble and contributing adults. They are a credit to Wanganui High School”.

Sam Hopper (Head of Sport)

Our 2012 Multisport team was ac-

companied to Lake Karapiro by a strong

group of elite Wanganui High School swim-

mers eager to compete in New Zealand‟s

very first secondary schools Open Water

swimmers competed in both championships

within the two days of competition to help

our triathlon teams.

We travelled up to Lake Karapiro on

Wednesday 28th March ready for an after-

noon of „Open Water Swim Races‟, Thurs-

day morning was the individual triathlon rac-

es and team races were in the afternoon. So

it is evident our athletes had a busy schedule

and eating right was a major part in our ef-

forts at both national events.

Our enthusiastic squad this year con-

sisted of: two U19 boys‟ teams, one U19

girls‟ team, two U16 boys‟ teams, one U16

girls‟ team, one U16 individual and six indi-

vidual swimmers.

Congratulations to Jack Unsworth,

Vladimir Stewart and Sam Hopper for claim-

ing Wanganui High School‟s second triath-

lon national‟s medal, in placing 3rd in the

U19 team‟s race.

Thank you very much to Mr Wright,

Mrs Martin and Mr Wright (James‟s Dad)

for the time you dedicated to the team in or-

ganising our travel, delicious cuisine and

accommodation. It truly was a great atmos-

phere to be in surrounding these two national

events.

e are lucky to have such devoted

teachers at Wanganui High School, who

make these trips possible, in sacrificing their

own time. It was great to see students taking

advantage of the opportunities High School

provides.

WHS ROWING

The Weekend gone saw thirty Rowers and two Coxwains from Wanganui High School travel to Lake Karapiro for the 2012 North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta, supported by Pub Charity. Over forty schools from throughout the North Island arrived in Karapiro for the last major hit out before Maadi Cup in Twizel. Over the three day regatta, Wanganui High School crews made it through to eleven A finals and twelve B finals, resulting in

and.

Friday’s rough weather and 3 ½ hour delay in racing did not dampen the enthusiasm of 1655 athletes registered for this regatta. Saturday and Sunday conditions were per-fect for rowing. Once again Sara-Jane Back was the star of the show on finals day win-ning two Silver medals and one Bronze medal in three of her five A finals. Well done, Hugh Pawson, who was very busy with five finals, placing 1st in the un-der 16 Single Sculls B final; the last race of the day for the club. The Novice Girls (voted the most supportive crew by their piers) Kate Hoskin, Ashley O’Neil, Kayla Spencer, Kadee Gedye and Riley Wyeth cox, who, with some steering problems requir-ing some course corrections, placed 2nd in the Under 18 Novice coxed four B final.

A fantastic effort from the under 16 coxed Quadruple Sculls crew of Hugh Pawson, Tyler Manville, Joshua Pewhairangi, Stave Hill and Reuben Gedye (cox) to battle through white cap water to qualify for the A final, then to place 6th in the North Island. The suc-cesses of the weekend are encouraging for the future of rowing at Wanganui High School.

A team of 19 Rowers and 2 coxwains from Wanganui High School will travel to the National Secondary Schools Maa-di Cup Regatta in Twizel on 25th March with support from the Lion Foundation and Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club and NZCT.

– Girls under-17 coxed four Sara-Jane Back, Sharnay Wilson, Amie Back, KaelaJaniten and Aleisha Elliot cox.

– Girls under 16 Single Sculls Sara-Jane Back.

– Lightweight Girls under 18 coxed four Briar Stevenson, Chelsea Smith, Danjelle Wilson, Sarah Somerville and Aleisha Elliot cox.

– Girls under 18 coxed four Sara-Jane Back, Kaela Janiten, Ella Cvitanovich, Briar Stevenson and Aleisha Elliot cox.

For the past six weeks WHS hosted a WSS Volleyball Competition. We had five teams competing – Senior Girls A and B, Junior Girls Green and Gold as well as a Junior Boys team. Teams from WGC and Turakina Maori Girls college also participated. The competition concluded in week 8 with WHS Girls A the overall winner after the six rounds of competition.

All teams played well and had an enjoyable season. A huge thanks to Mrs Bennetts, Miss Wilcock and Mr Owen who coached teams and have been crucial to the development of Volleyball within the school. We are hoping to host a Junior Volleyball Tournament again in Term Four.
