DefinitionsBlack & White Photography (Monochrome - FIAP)A black and white image is one with tones from very dark grey (black) to very clear grey (white). A black and white image toned entirely in a single colour will be able to stand in the black & white category and can be reproduced in black & white in the catalogue. On the other hand a black and white image modified by partial toning or by the addition of one colour to a part of the image becomes a colour image and should be entered in the colour category. This type of image will be reproduced in the colour pages of the catalogue.

Nature PhotographyNature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well- informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible.

Nature Pictures which have been modified but preserve the truth of the statement may be entered. Any images that show an obvious alteration cannot be entered into the nature section but can be entered into the Open sections.

Open SectionsThese are open to any form of photography and can be of any subject matter with the exception of Nature pictures unless they have been obviously altered from reality. Any Nature pictures that do not show any obvious modification cannot be entered into the Open sections.

Contemporary PhotographyMay be defined as the concept which stimulates the mind of the viewer, to interpret the message conveyed through the creative use of line, form and colour.

MidPhot 2019 now has an online entry system. Your members can enter and upload their images themselves or youcan do it for them. All we ask is that the prints come collectively as a Club in as few boxes as possible

Make sure that you read the rules as there are important changes to the Nature sectionsand that your members are aware of them as well.

All Entrants and Competition Secretariesplease remember to put a printed copy of your entries in the box along with the prints.

Either the form that appears on-line when completing your entry or the email confirmation.

Competition Secretaries - Please keep Joe Bloggs’s mono prints together, then their colour, then nature. Followed bythe next author, you don’t have to put the authors in alphabetical order anymore.

Mark your boxes as well as your entry forms how you will be collecting your returns at the end of the exhibition. If you are using a collection point, such as the Ducketts or Ian Bailey then please indicate this on the box with a label stating MidPhot 2019 Collection DUCKETT or MidPhot 2019 Collection BAILEY. If collecting from Smethwick Club rooms then SPS. And don’t forget to notify the collectors so they are aware of whose boxes they need to take with them. More details can be found in the guidance notes on line.

Rules and some guidance notes will be sent to all club secretaries and can be found in the MCPF Newsletter and on thewebsite.

The on-line System will be open for entries from Dec 31st up until midnight Feb 8th(print entries have to handed in Feb 9th)

How to make your MCPF MidPhot entry

You can enter as an individual or your club competition secretary can enter them on your behalf. Whichever method you choose to use, please send your work collectively with your club’s. This will not only help with unpacking but with package storage and returns. Please note any packages sent as individuals will be returned with your club’s entry.

These instructions show you how to enter the titles for your Colour, Monochrome and Nature prints and image files for projected digital image (PDI) entries. You will do this for each member in turn. When you have finished reading this, click on the link below to start. You will be asked first for your email address, then your name and postal address and then to select your club from the list of MCPF clubs.

You can now enter your own images. If you are entering work on behalf of other club members and want the information to come to you then click the “No” button. You will be asked to submit your email address again, and to enter the name of the entrant, the address details will default to the original one entered, leave as they are. Submit the titles and or upload the images as before.

You will be asked to re-submit your email address, each time you want to enter details of another member. This is for security reasons, to check that you are not a robot.

A title is required for each image but it must not contain the member’s name or your club’s name. You do not need to rename the PDI files. PDI images will be projected at 1600 x 1200 pixels. If you upload an image whose dimensions are larger than this it will be resized for you. Note that when you upload an image file, the file name is used to suggest a title. If you use this suggestion, please make sure you edit it to remove any names.

Once you have finished entering the details for one person you can either go back to the start (click on list shown on left hand side of screen) or close and re-open the programme.

You do not have to put all the entries in at one time – you can stop the process at any time and return later using the link below. When you return, you will see a list of the members whose work you have entered. If you need to make a change you can select one of these, or you can click the “click here” link to add a new member’s work.

Reminder - If you have entered individually please send your prints together with any other club members work, collectively in as few a boxes as possible, this will help with the unpacking and storage of print boxes. Please note any packages sent as individuals will be returned with the rest of your club’s entry.

Competition secretaries, please pack the prints as per entry forms printed from the on-line system in author order. And please submit a copy of everyone’s entry in the box, along with any entry fees and cheques. And remember if you want your prints returned by post or courier to include the costs with your entry fees. Cheques should be made payable to “MCPF”.

Dr David Moore EFIAP MPAGB BPE5

Handsworth Photographic SocietyIt must have been gratifying indeed to the few who, in December 1893, assembled to consider the possibility of forming a Photographic Society for Handsworth to know that their efforts have been crowned with a phenomenal success. It is a practical proof of the service of Photography as a bond of brotherhood that, commencing with a promised membership of some forty enthusiastic Photographers, the ball of progress has been kept rolling till now the Society numbers eighty strong. Judging from its social character, the Society was bound to become one of the most popular institutions in Birmingham.

Handsworth Photographic Society’s first ever meeting before a large and appreciative audience of about fifty took place at Soho House Museum on Wednesday February 7th 1894. The main topic of the meeting was a lantern slide lecture given by Mr F.W.W. Howell, FRGS, an enterprising Icelandic explorer.

On Wednesday, March 7th 1894, the first lantern exhibition at the Society’s room was given, and about forty members and friends participated in the pleasure of witnessing some 200 slides (made by members) passed through the lime-light lantern. The following Wednesday, the President (Mr Philip Whitehouse) gave a most instructive and interesting demonstration on lantern slide making, and the Council were doing their utmost to make the remainder of the session as attractive and instructive as possible.

In 1895 the first annual meeting of the Society was held in the Club Rooms, Hampstead Road, on Wednesday, January 2nd. Some twenty-five members were present. The Honorary Secretary (Mr W.M. Jones), chemist, of the Villa Cross, presented a most satisfactory report of the first year’s work. The balance sheet showed the Society to be in a good financial position, and with an increasing membership the future success of the Society was secure. The present membership now numbered 85, which clearly showed that such an institution was wanted for Handsworth. At the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was given to the proprietor of Handsworth for his kindness in reporting the meetings and monthly programmes, which had also included the arrangements for future monthly Society excursions.

A more delightful place than Sutton Park could not have been chosen for the first Saturday afternoon excursion of the Society on 18th May 1895. A favourable opportunity presented itself to those members who were beginners in photography to acquire some knowledge of the manipulation of the camera from those members more experienced in photographic work. The Clerk of the Weather was in best humours on that auspicious day with thirty-two members enjoying a very sunny day and voted it a grand day. The excursion became an important aspect of the Society’s social structure and was well supported by the members who enjoyed the visit but also the opportunity to look at each other’s photographic equipment.

By 1908 the thirteenth Annual Meeting of Handsworth Photographic Society had taken place on Thursday January 9th, the reports showed the interest of the members was well maintained throughout the year, 1907. The Honorary Secretary (Mr A. E. Teague), reported that forty-two club meetings had been held and the average attendance was eighteen as compared with seventeen in the previous year, the Council holding some twelve meetings. A set of photographs had been sent in for competition in the local Societies Section of the Birmingham photographic Society, which had been well received and successful.

During the year the Society had become affiliated with the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, having joined the recently formed Midland Photographic Federation the previous year where the Society had been represented at the inaugural meeting, on June 27th, 1907, by Mr E. A. Teague. In the first issue of the Midland Year Book and Gazetteer (1908) confirmation that membership stood at forty-nine with nine new members being elected, three having resigned, and the names of four for various reasons having been removed from the list, a slight increase on the previous year. Messrs. A.E. Cope and E.A. Teague were elected as delegates to represent the Society at future Midland Photographic Federation Meetings.

Almost from its inception, the Society had a close association with the Midland Counties Photographic Federation which does so much to help photographic clubs throughout the Midlands. No fewer than three of the Federation’s Presidents came from the Society, namely A.E. Cope, served 1913-14; T.O. Prince, served 1961-62; J. Joyce, served 1970-71; with other members regularly assisting at Federation events.

The Annual Exhibition was held in May 1908, and proved as successful as preceding ones, a Lantern Slide exhibition was also held in November with sixty-four slides being entered. In addition to the usual technical demonstrations given by members and friends, several sets of Prize Slides were exhibited and demonstrations given by trade representatives. Later that year the Society (with the YMCA) was due to move to new premises with more up-to-date accommodation and a properly fitted up dark room facility.

The weekly meetings which had averaged 16 members (due to the attractive fixtures on the programmes) began in large rooms on the second floor of College House, Hampstead Road, chosen for the head-quarters of the Society, and furnished in such style as to give it the appearance of a well-appointed club room, being at the convenience of members from 8 a.m. till 11 p.m., it served that purpose most admirably. A capital dark room was one of the most useful properties of the Society. The Society flourished until 1915 and then remained dormant until 1931. During the ensuing years the Soho Hill Men’s Movement Camera Club was formed and continued to represent the districted of Handsworth and was affiliated to the Midland Photographic Federation with the clubs delegate attending General meetings.

The photograph taken on Wednesday 14th April 1920 of Soho Hill Men’s C.C. Exhibition Room

At the General Meeting, which had taken place on Saturday, October 17th, 1931, it had been reported with regret that Soho Hill Men’s Movement Camera Club, had been compelled to close down, mainly owing to the fact that they had had no meeting place for nearly two years. As a counter to this announcement, the Secretary reported that some of the members of Soho Hill had formed a new Society (under an old name) Handsworth Photographic Society, which had recently been admitted into membership of the Federation.

The 1931 December edition of The Midland Federation Quarterly confirmed that a census of Societies membership taken at the close of the year showed that Handsworth Photographic Society had rejoined the Midland Federation with an initial membership of 24, The formation of the Society which had been partly formed from Soho Hill Men’s Camera Club took place on Wednesday, 22nd July, 1931, at St. Peters Church Hall, Handsworth, with Mr R. Sanders being elected to serve as the first President, and Mr A. Eric Orchard was elected as General Secretary and the delegate to represent the Society at General Meetings.

In 1932 the first Members Exhibition was held in St. Peters Church Hall, which was a great success being well supported. The following year on the 15th February, 1933, the Society held its first International Exhibition at the same venue. The Exhibitors were mostly from the Colonies and the U.S.A. Since the exhibition was very successful with both support from entrants and also attendance by member clubs. The committee decided that future exhibitions should follow the same format. The Annual Exhibitions soon became an extremely important annual event in the Society’s calendar. The three-day exhibition which opened on Wednesday 15th March 1939 attracted an entry of 360 prints in all classes the open class accounting for 266 prints. Five out of the eight honours in this class went to foreign entrants. The services of Mrs Helen Campbell, A.R.P.S., of had been secured as Judge with Mr J.S. Warwick, A.R.P.S., lectured on one evening “The Lure of the Birds” and on another Mr J. E. Hall, FRPS, lectured on “The Wonder Mount of Brittany”.

They continued to be held each year although during the war years they were held in mid-summer so that there would be fewer hours of darkness in which to be troubled by bombs. After the war the date was moved to late autumn. These exhibitions continued to be successful. In view of the enthusiasm and increased membership the Society decided to extend and improve its Annual Exhibition.

Although tempting to mention a score of names of enthusiastic members who had contributed so willingly by hard work to achieve the continued success of the Society. Mention must be made of three members whose efforts during this period had been recognised by the Society and who were made honorary life members. These being Mr A.H. Pinfield, ARPS, Mr R. Haseler, exhibition organiser, whose work for the society is known only to members, and the indefatigable Hon. Secretary, Mr J.T. Parry for his dedication. Other members too, worked equally untiringly, but without the limelight, possibly the secret of the smooth working of the exhibition was its very strong social side, for which the lady members take their full share.

The picture shows Handsworth International Exhibition held on April 23rd 1964, with from L. to R. Tom Hanson, MCPF Council, Arthur Hopkins, President of Handsworth PS, Alex Watson, who judged the exhibition, George Paddock, MCPF President, and Mildred Sothern who had opened the Exhibition.

In 1973 the Exhibition was transferred to Friends Hall, Farm Street, Hockley, Birmingham and with the reduction in space at the venue the Society was now only able to hold a limited Open Exhibition. In the Society’s Golden Jubilee Year the 49th was Open Exhibition was officially opened by Mr Fred Rea, Vice President of the Society, on Wednesday, November 11th 1981 which was the start of a four-day event.

On Wednesday 28th October 1998, the 67th Open Exhibition was held at its new venue at Elmwood Church House, Handsworth Wood, which was the start of a three-day event with print and slide sections being well supported by entrants in both categories. The Exhibition was particularly well attended on the opening night with the members making everyone feel welcome with a selection of tasty cakes available.

Wednesday July 9th 2008, Handsworth Photographic Society, one of the oldest in the UK, returned to the venue where it first met 114 years ago when its exhibition In The Picture opened at Soho House Museum. The exhibition drew together both old and new photographs of Handsworth and around Birmingham taken by members of the society, it also included a collection of camera equipment that charted the development of film photography from the 19th century to the present day. There were also examples of “pin hole” cameras, guides on how to make them and a collection of images created with them.

The Society’s hay days were un-doubtable during the 1970’s and 1980’s with an average membership being around eighty-five members although by the 1990’s the average had reduced to a membership level of around sixty-five members. However, by the start of the Millennium new members were not joining and with an aging membership, the active number attending started to drop off. The members agreed by a large majority to change the Society’s name from Handsworth (HPS) to North Birmingham Photographic Society (NBPS) with effect from 1st May 2016 in the hope of attracting new members.

The Society members formally dissolved North Birmingham Photographic Society (formally Handsworth Photographic Society) at their meeting held on Wednesday 17th October 2018. This was after nearly 125 years of history, (with breaks for world wars) serving the photographic interests of the local people.
