September 22, 2016Indeed, a wonderful time was had by all! Rotarians andfriends who attended Rotary After Hours last Thursday hadthe best time enjoying warm conversation, cold beverages,hot appetizers, and the most enjoyable conversationsimaginable. Many thanks to Angela Baker, who made thearrangements and took care of important details. Interact Clubs Need Donations

The Interact Clubs are again collecting supplies to create giftsfor others. They request toilet paper rolls to fill with goodies,trinkets, and treats for local nursing homes and hospitals. They can also use left over gift wrapping paper, ribbons andyarn to tie the ends of these treats. Sheree Pierce, sponsor ofthe West Brook Club, asks that you bring items to the clubmeetings and/or the Rotary Office before November 10 so shecan make a delivery to the Interact Mixer.

"Judge Lamar Cecil

and the 60th Anniversary of the

Desegregation of Lamar Tech"

Our speaker today was Historian Robert J. Robertson, PastPresident of the Rotary Club of Beaumont {197576}.Robert was introduced by Alan Sampson, alias "SluggerSampson." On the 60th Anniversary of the historic desegregation ofLamar Tech, Robert “sang like a canary” as he told thehistory of Judge Lamar Cecil, the key figure in upholdingand implementing this decision in Southeast Texas. Lamar Cecil was raised in Houston. His father was a longtime railroad man. Cecil obtained most of his education inCatholic schools and studied to become a priest. After oneyear, he dropped out to enroll in Rice University. He wenton to become a defense lawyer, and was then appointed aJudge. Keeping in mind that Texas was a state that was dominatedby Democrats who resisted desegregation, Judge LamarCecil presided over two court cases here in Southeast Texasin 1955 and 1956 that had local, statewide, and nationalimportance as our country was wrestling with the issues ofdesegregation and civil rights. The first case involved a lawsuit filed against the City ofBeaumont by 5 black men who wanted to play golf atTyrrell Park Golf Course back in the "Jim Crowtimes"when it was for “whitesonly." Judge Cecil quickly ruled intheir favor. While the five men prevailed, the ruling incited



protests and "massive resistance" classified as "whitebacklash." The second case was brought by students who were deniedadmission at Lamar Tech under the “whitesonly” Jim Crowlaws. Again, this ruling was met with protests andresistance. Supremist groups, including the KKK, saw theirnumbers increase as these and similar rulings brought outsome of the worst behavior in many arenas throughout ournation. The Judge had a very interesting life during which he helpedbuild a platform for the presidential nomination of DwightD. Eisenhower. He also rubbed shoulders with ThurgoodMarshall. Unfortunately, Judge Lamar Cecil passed away in 1958 anddid not live long enough to see the enactment of the 1964Civil Rights Act laid out by President John F. Kennedy andfollowed through to law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Today we saluted Judge Lamar Cecil for the "groundbreaking work in civil rights, and thanked him for pavingthe way."
