THIS SPELLING LOOKS A LITTLE DIFFERENT…
In second grade, students are required to know and apply phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. In order to show mastery of this skill, they will be required to create new words that follow the spelling pattern each week.
On their spelling test each Friday, students will list 5 new words that follow the pattern/skill. We will be practicing this throughout the week so they should be familiar with how to create new words and apply the skill.
For homework, students should choose the middle box of the spelling choice board. ** New words and sentences: (weekly)
Write 5 spelling words that are in the same family as the spelling skill for this week. Use two of them in sentences.** These words cannot be their spelling words and must follow the pattern/skill for the week.
Example: Skill: short u (cvc)- cup, truck, duck 1. The blue truck was parked next to the barn. 2. My cup broke when it fell off of the counter.
THIS MATH LOOKS A LITTLE DIFFERENT….
While we will continue to conduct our classes in variety of ways (small group, using manipulatives, solving word problems), your child’s homework may look a little different as well.
Here’s an example to help you understand the rigor of the Common Core Math Standards, as well as that deeper meaning of mathematics and numbers that your child needs to succeed:
25 + 59 =*See Flipchart and use manipulatives*
