INTRODUCTION
Today, Northeast Oklahoma is becoming known a.s the Green Country. Most of this area was at one time the Cherokee Nation, and it is of this part of Oklahoma for which we pause in our hurried stride to grant the wishes of many whose monuments so often inscribed "Forget Me Not", "Remember Me", or to confirm that they are "Gone, But Not Forgotten." The Cherokee Nation country is one of the most beautiful places in the United States with its flint rock hills, prairie grasslands, clear cold springs and sparkling waters, and a display of many kinds of trees, flowers and plants to delight everyone. This is the kind of country covered in this compilation.
During the early 1800's Northeastern Oklahoma first felt the footsteps of early pioneers and settlers and there were many burial places and cemeteries begun. Many well kept cemeteries exist today, but there are hundreds that have been left to time and the elements--abandoned and forgotten. It is also true that hundreds of burial places have been removed by progress, covered by lake waters, or completely erased in the wake of machines and neglect. At least four generations of peoples are concerned here, and to our hardy forefathers this small efoort is attempted to keep their memory alive. For they are OUR PEOPLE, and by their toil and love helped so much to pave the way for our twentieth century good life and comforts.
In the late l930's some work was done by W.P.A. projects to record cemeteries in Oklahoma. In the thirty some, years that have passed many of those recorded cemeteries have disappeared. In like manner many historical landmarks, buildings, institutions, and other pioneer marks have been removed forever.
In measurement of time this search and compilation deals with burials from 1825 to 1969 for cemeteries containing only a few graves to those containing hundreds. Monuments range from the elaborate marble and granite stones to the nail-scratched pieces of sandst6ne. Many graves only have an unmarked rough stone or no marker at all. The uniform markers of the many brave people who served in the several wars stand out noticably. The elements have been harsh and some of the inscriptions on the old stones are beyond legibility. Not all burial places will ever be found, nor will all the graves ever be known. It is believed that the inscriptions recorded for each cemetery, or information for unmarked graves furnished by relatives and others, the unscaled plats of the burial places will be of help in providing a permanent record. On the plats are shown numbered blocks representing grave locations corresponding to the number in the listing, and the unnumbered blocks are for the unknown. The directional symbol points to the north on each plat.
vii
This work has been made possible under the Doris Duke Oral Indian History Project directed by the American Indian Institute. Special credit for assistance is given to the Phillips Collection of the University Library and to the Western History Collection of the University of Oklahoma. Also space here does not permit the listing of the many individuals who gave freely of their time assisting in this search and compilation, and for their interest and courtesy much appreciation is due.
It is recognized that there could be omissions not intended, corrections that should be made, and acknowledgments due, all of which will be respectfully received by the American Indian Institute, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma.
Other Volumes of OUR PEOPLE are planned to include other burial places and cemeteries which are not in this volume.
For use of families and individuals there is provided in the back of this book blank pages for whatever recordings that might be desired.
September 6, 1969 Norman, Oklahoma

The cemetery for the Orphans Aslyum of the Cherokee Nation was located about 200 feet north of where Main Street is now. In the time the school was in existence this was the prinicple burial place for school children who had no relatives and others. Fannie Whiteday, about 90 years old, went to school at the Aslyum, and tells that Hadden Street was built thru the middle of the cemetery without regard for the graves.
