Our earth and environment is in crisis and in need of a renewed approach in viewing and appreciating the gifts of our earth and our responsibilities toward our created world. These two books give us the perspective from our indigenous peoples. Braiding Sweetgrass (Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants) by Robin Wall Kimmerer, an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, embraces the idea that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In this book Kimmerer brings these lenses of knowledge together to show that the awakening of a wider ecologi- cal consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. This book is “A hymn of love to the world.” (Elizabeth Gilbert). As Long As Grass Grows (The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, From Colonization to Standing Rock) by Dina Gilio-Whitaker, indigenous educator and activist, through the unique lens of indigenized environ- mental justice explores the fraught history of treaty violations, strug- gles for food and water security, and the protection of sacred sites in the United States. “A masterpiece… Powerful, urgent, and necessary reading.” Rosanne Dunbar-Ortiz. These two books provide a background for addressing the environmental justice issues that face us today as we act to make changes to preserve the gifts of our earth for future generations.
