Wednesday Night Live

Many of you have been asking about our Wednesday night fellowship meal and our plans for the upcoming year. This year we are very excited about a some new opportunities that were briefly discussed during our Wednesday Night Live picnic at the park in May. In an effort to continue the long tradition of fellowship at First moving forward we want to focus on maximizing our collective experience and connecting with each other in a deep and meaningful way. We believe we can accomplish this in three ways: provide quality home cooked meals, encourage table fellowship while eating, and by offering a variety of classes that will increase activity and encourage spiritual growth as a church family. We will kick off our WNL program August 29th with a delicious home cooked meal and will share with everyone our specific plans for classes and programs. If you are interested in leading a class or group or have some ideas you would like to share we would love to hear from you! We will have a variety of courses ranging from bible studies to an exercise class and need your help to make a new and re-energized WNL a success! Be on the lookout for more information around the church and we hope to see you on August 29th for our kick-off event! Mike and Harriet Smith & Pastor Todd

Children’s Ministry

August News

I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who had anything to do with Operation Overboard VBS last month! The children had a lot of fun and learned how important it is to “dive in” to God’s Word and apply it in their lives. They shared the love of Jesus by putting together fifty care packages for the homeless, and they made beautiful cards that are being delivered to shut-ins by our Seniors Ministry. They worshipped through music and dance and made some really cool and meaningful crafts to reinforce the Bible teachings each night. And that’s not all! Some serious fun was had with each night’s scripture during recreation time. God’s work took place because of all of your support and help! We will be kicking off a new Sunday School curriculum for our elementary grade children this fall, so be on the look out for opportunities to share your time and talents with our precious children coming soon. Please pray for the FUMC Children’s Ministry as we work to make it an exciting and God-honoring place for the children to grow as disciples of Christ. Blessings, Valerie

Kay’s Corner

Summer is moving quickly. Our Keepers group is certainly taking advantage of the summer season. In July we visited the Lincoln Museum in Bostic, had lunch at Smith Drug in Forest City, them visited Washburn Store. It was a great day. Our plans for the remainder of the summer and early fall include a trip to Blowing Rock to visit the museum in August, visiting the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte in September and going to the Whippoorwill Academy and Village in October.

*************************

I would like to share a letter that I received from the children of Paul and Mildred Cash addressed not only to me, but to the entire church as well.

Dearest Kay and Church Family, Our family wishes to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for assisting, on short notice, in saying “Good-Bye – For Now” to our precious Daddy, Paul Cash. He always wanted to be a devoted parishioner, but in the last year and a half, since Mama died; he truly needed be with each of you . . . for emotional comfort. He did find a sense of wanting to carry on by being among his church family.

Our gracious thanks are extended to you and all staff members, who took the reins in working together to assist in the preparation of his beautiful service. We know that much time and coordination went into your perfect planning. We were all consoled and grateful. You were all his friends. The meal, additionally, was perfect. Please extend our sincere thanks for those who participated in that kind endeavor.

Our family has been BLESSED by your steadfast devotion to all of us. With love, The Children of Paul & Mildred Cash

THANK YOU FOR THE WARM

WELCOME!

Liz And I want to thank our Morganton FUMC family for the warm welcome we have received since moving to Morganton in July. We are grateful for all the hard work and time invested in the beautiful parsonage on Woodside Street. We appreciate the delicious “welcome” food and Methodist Women “pounding”. We are thankful for the many people that have been so helpful in our already feeling a part of this community. We feel very fortunate to be a part of such a loving and faithful congregation.

I grew up in Charlotte, NC and attended colleges at UNC- Chapel Hill, Emory, and Gordon- Conwell – Charlotte. I have served a variety of appointments in the WNCC for 31 years, most recently serving the Franklin FUMC and the Lenoir FUMC. Liz has been a public school elementary teacher, and will be teaching kindergarten at Forest Hill Elementary. We are blessed to have three children: Phillip, who lives in Cary and manages a restaurant, Stephen, who lives in Boone and works for the Western Youth Network, and our daughter Cat and her husband who live in Atlanta. Cat is working for CNN there in Atlanta, and her husband Troy works for a law firm. We have a 2 year old black lab dog named Molly and a 6 year old tuxedo cat named Miranda.

First United Methodist Church of Morganton has long had a great reputation in our Annual Conference as one of our finest churches with a great faith history. We are grateful for the opportunity to get to know you better, to serve you, and Christ with you in this community! Love In Christ, John Fowler
