PASTOR ’S CORNER THE SONGS OF THE SUFFERING SERVANT

Dear parishioners, I am not with you this Sunday, as I am in Montreal for a Dominican meeting, but when I saw the importance of today’s readings, I couldn’t leave without breaking open for you a key to understanding Jesus that is offered to us in today’s readings.

The voice of God the Father is heard only twice in the synoptic gospels (i.e. Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and both times, God says roughly the same thing. At Jesus’ baptism, in Mark, “a voice came from the heavens, ‘you are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” (Mk 1,11) A second time, at the Transfiguration (today’s gospel), “a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, ‘this is my beloved Son. Listen to him.’” (Mk 9,7)

What isn’t obvious to the average reader is that those few words: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (In Matthew and Luke: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased”) – these few words are an echo of this verse from the prophet Isaiah: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am well-pleased.” (Is 42,1) This is the first verse of the first of four poems that we find in the prophet Isaiah, and that are traditionally referred to as the “Songs of the Suffering Servant”. By loosely quoting this verse from the prophet Isaiah, the author of the gospel is, in effect, directing the reader to those four poems, as a source of revelation on who Jesus really is.

What are the four Songs of the Suffering Serv-ant? They are four brief texts that paint the portrait of a mysteriously beautiful suffering servant of God. This servant is not identified by name. For centuries, the scribes of Israel

speculated as to who he might be. After the resurrection of Jesus, scales fell from the eyes of the first disciples who had known Jesus be-fore and after his resurrection, and it became patently clear that these four poems were stunningly prophetic, and stunningly accurate in their veiled announcement of none other than Jesus himself.

I find it incredible that God the Father speaks only twice, as I have mentioned, in the synop-tic gospels, and that both times, it is to tell us to go to the Songs of the Suffering Servant for a proper understanding of Jesus’ identity and vocation. And they truly are a bottomless source of illumination on Jesus the person, the man who walked the earth, but also on his fundamental identity as suffering servant, on the terrible consequences for him of his un-conditional obedience to the Father, and on the wonderful consequences for us of his fi-delity, even unto death. I can only urge you to go to those four poems for yourselves. They reveal Jesus to us in a manner that even the gospels don’t quite succeed in doing. In fact, the second part of the book of Isaiah in which these poems are found, has been called “the fifth gospel”.

Those of you who are daily mass-goers will hear the first three of these poems on Mon-day, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week, and the fourth at the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday. verses 1-7; the Second Song is at chapter 49, verses 1-13; the Third is at chapter 50, verses 4-9, and the Fourth is at chapter 52, verse 13 to chap-ter 53, verse 12. Now I know that many, like my-self, prefer to read text on paper rather than on a screen, so I have made a number of hard copies of these wonderful texts. They should be found on the parish services table in the foyer.

Spend time during this Lenten season reading and re-reading these texts. I assure you, it will be time well-spent.

God bless you all, Fr. Guy

Stewardship Reflection February 25 - 2nd Sunday of Lent At the top of the mountain Peter, James, and John could see the glory of God present in the person of Christ. “It is good for us to be here”, says Peter. We do not have to climb to the top of a mountain to experi-ence God’s glory. We can witness God’s glory every day in simple acts of generosity and kindness. When we use and share our gifts for God’s glory our lives, and the lives of others, are transfigured. Each of us has a role to play in advancing God’s Kingdom. It is good for us to be here, and to share the gifts God gives us here and now. Not only for the sake of our eternal reward in heaven, but to do good here and now for the sake of making this a better world!
