19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

Please read Fr. Tom’s Corner as an insert to this week’s

bulletin. He has a very important message regarding family catechesis. Stewardship spirituality invites us to surrender control of our lives to God in grateful recognition of the simple fact that all we have is a gift from Him. Today’s readings illustrate what amazing things can

happen when we fully invite God to take charge of our lives by embracing the stewardship way of life. When we take our eyes off God, we fail to see that all we have is a gift from Him. We lose trust in the Lord and we do not make our lives a grateful response to Him. Peter makes this mistake in our Gospel passage from Matthew. Jesus sends the disciples in a boat ahead of Him to the other side of the shore. Later that evening, Jesus casually strolls up to the boat, walking on the sea. He invites Peter to join Him. As Peter begins to walk on the water, he momentarily takes his eyes off Jesus to notice the strong wind surrounding them. With that, he sinks. But what if Peter had not taken his eyes off Christ? What a grand adventure he could have experienced walking on the sea with Jesus! When we take our eyes off Christ, the many blessings He has given us, and the loving way He treats us, we sink, too. When we embrace the stewardship way of life — letting go of a tight hold over our money, time and talents — our lives become a grand adventure, rooted firmly and gratefully in the God Who always cares for us.

Dear All Saints Parish,

You might have heard that our CRE program, the program that teaches the children the faith, will be

transitioning into a new format called Family Faith Formation. Bishop Cotta has asked all parishes to begin looking into

making the move away from class based teaching of the faith to children to a model where parents organically teach

their children the faith throughout the day to day moments of family life. This will be a big change for parishes and for

families but there is great wisdom in this approach and the long term benefits and fruits are many, I believe. Below are

several answers to questions you might have about this change.

What is our goal? To form the entire family in their faith, by catechizing the parents first and by giving them the tools

and confidence to teach their children the Catholic Faith and in turn raise their children to be lifelong disciples of Jesus

Christ.

What will it look like? Well, in a normal time, with no pandemic, it would look something like the following. We would

only meet once a month for about an hour and half, maybe two. The entire family would come, we’d have a short time

of food and fellowship, and then the children would break off from their parents, some to be babysat, the rest would be

sent to learn a lesson. The parents would stay behind to be given a presentation on a particular topic for that month.

They would be given the tools and preparation needed for them to teach their children throughout the rest of the

month at home. The family during that year would keep a scrap book of the activities to demonstrate the different ways

they have lived out their faith and of the lessons learned. Those children receiving 1st reconciliation or 1st communion

would receive lessons during this time to help them prepare for those sacraments. The process for the sacrament of

confirmation would not change. It would continue as it has in years past with the addition of an extra year per the

Diocese of Stockton.

During this time of COVID, because meeting together is not allowed, we plan to record a video each month with the

lesson for the parents. COVID complicates everything, as we all know very well. This program is no exception. As with

life, this program is not meant to be done via ZOOM or videos but for now until things return to normal it may be that

way.

Why are we making this change? One reason is because the studies are in, and the news is not good. 80% of adults

under age 30 say they were raised in religion but are now unaffiliated with any faith.

https://www.pewforum.org/2010/02/17/religion-among-the-millennials/

Our children are walking away from the faith at an alarming rate and we need to rethink how we go about evangelizing

them and raising them up in the faith. We want the faith we give them to be more than just facts and information about

God but actually a faith that forms a loving relationship with the living God of the universe. A faith that is modeled and

lived out in the home. 99.7% of a child’s life experience lies outside of parish catechesis. And so the best place to learn

about the faith is at home, in fact the Church says that parents have the first responsibility for the education of their

children. It is their God given mission to teach their children how to pray and to help them discover their vocation as

children of God (CCC 2223, 2226). And if that seems like an overwhelming task with everything else going on in one’s

life, I’d say don’t panic, the Church is here to accompany you in this mission. That is what our focus will be when we

meet, to give you the confidence and the tools so that you can accomplish your mission, month by month. This is a new

way of doing things for everyone, and there will likely be bumps in the road but we must start somewhere and we will

all learn, grow and adapt from there. For more on this, I invite you to read Doug Beaumont’s blog on this very subject.

https://douglasbeaumont.com/2019/01/08/on-family-faith-formation-in-the-parish/#_ftn18

Who is it for? All families with children, even if your child is not old enough to receive a sacrament, this formation is for

you, to help you learn as a parent how to teach and raise your children to be lifelong Catholics. When a child reaches the

age for confirmation they will attend confirmation classes as they have done in the past, that won’t change, what will

change is that it will be over a three year period now per the diocesan new policy.

Jared Alamo 1802 Tartan Rd

Turlock, CA 95382 Phone: (209) 402-5626 • Email: [email protected]

Dear All Saints Community,

Greetings! I have been an active member of your parish for 8 years. First, I want to thank you, the parish community, for providing me with such a great faith formation through the Factor youth group and CSA. This parish community has been a huge blessing for my faith journey! This is one of the reasons I am writing you now.

I have been prayerfully discerning what God might be calling me to do next. After much prayer, discernment, and speaking with friends and family members, I have decided to apply for a year of service with NET Ministries for the upcoming school year. I have officially been accepted and I will be serving as a missionary for NET Ministries, who strive to reach over 100,000 youth with the Gospel!

In August, I will travel to Minnesota to participate in a five-week faith-training program where I will learn how to grow in my own personal faith and effectively share it with others. Then from September to May, I will be in full-time active ministry with my assigned NET team where I will engage youth on a daily basis by helping lead retreats, giving talks, and leading small groups at Catholic parishes and schools. I am excited to get out and start sharing the mission with NET!

The first leg of my missionary journey has already begun as I have been building my support team of faithful and passionate ministry partners who have a passion for evangelization in the Catholic Church! In order to cover the costs of training, healthcare, and a small monthly stipend, NET Ministries has asked me to raise between $6,000-$7,000 in ministry partnership to cover a portion of the costs for my missionary year of service. (The actual cost for my year of service is more than three times this amount, but NET Ministries raises additional funds to support its missionaries.)

If you would like to donate, you can go to www.netusa.org/supportamissionary and type Jared Alamo in the missionary name box. I am greatly appreciative of any donations. If you cannot support me financially, I ask for your prayers for me and my teammates and know that I will be praying for you during this year of service.

Please feel free to contact me about this opportunity or if you just want to learn more about my mission or NET. I can be reached by email: [email protected], or by phone: (209) 402-5626.

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Peace and God Bless,

Jared Alamo

THE CREED: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty. From there He shall come again to judge the living

THE OUR FATHER: Our Father, Who art in

Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

HAIL, HOLY QUEEN: Hail, Holy Queen, mother of mercy; our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, O most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER: O God whose only-begotten Son by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that by meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

MEMORARE: Remember oh most Blessed Virgin Mary that never was it known, that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto thee, oh virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you do we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. Oh mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer them. Amen.

PRAY FOR VOCATIONS “Get hold of yourselves! It is I. Do not be afraid!” Uncertainty can sometimes bring fear along with God’s call to consecrated life or priesthood. If the Lord is truly calling you, what is needed is trust. If you are discerning your vocation, contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] to inquire about vocations or the vocation ministry.

ALL SAINTS SCHEDULE: Masses will be resuming but they will be outdoors. We will keep you posted of times each week. We do ask that you bring your own chairs. Masks will still be required. Remember that the dispensation is still in effect if you are not comfortable or able to attend live Mass. Livestreaming will be done as well. If you have questions, please call the office.

BMA UPDATE: All Saints has reached 115% of our 2020 BMA Goal as of August 5! Our “percent of participation” is at 27%. Please remember that anything over our goal comes back to All Saints. We sincerely appreciate all those who are supporting our 2020 BMA.

SPECIAL 2ND COLLECTION: This weekend we are having a special 2nd collection to help the people of Lebanon, who suffered a major explosion this past week. Lebanon is in a crisis and the need is great. Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) is launching an emergency relief fund to provide food, health care, and shelter to thousands that were affected by the explosion, as well as, the coronavirus and a collapsed economy. CNEWA is a Vatican approved charity. This link will take you to All Saints online giving where it is labeled “Lebanon Relief”. Thank you for your generosity. NOVENA PREPARATION FOR ASSUMPTION: Bishop Cotta has asked that the diocese pray the Rosary in preparation for Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary that will be on August 15. All Saints will be praying the Rosary each night through August 14 at 8pm. On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary there will be a Mass at 9am. If you come to All Saints for the Rosary, please wear a mask, bring your own chair, and practice social distancing. The Rosary will also be livestreamed for those who would like to stay home. See the bulletin insert on how to pray the Rosary.

He will be starting a missionary journey and is looking for support from our very generous community. A link has been provided at the bottom of the letter that will take you to Jared’s youtube video.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER “He said, ‘Come.’ Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:29)

When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the power of His presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen to how Jesus is calling you to live the extraordinary life He has intended for you.
