Lincoln Middle School Instrumental News

It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of another school year. This year has been really

excellent; the students have worked very hard and presented some fantastic performances! We

are looking forward to the next few weeks and all of the performance opportunities that are

coming up.

Congratulations to the 6th grade Orchestra on an outstanding concert on April 18th! Great work!

The 8th grade Orchestra students will be doing several “Giving Bach” performances at Jeffer-

son, Sunnyside and Franklin during their Orchestra classes in May. The students are very excit-

ed about sharing the “mUSic” with the students at the elementary schools! Be on the lookout for

information about these and other “Giving Bach” activities at the end of the year.

We have numerous concerts coming up to finish out the year as well. 6th grade Concert and Jazz

Bands and 7th and 8th grade Jazz Band will have their final concert Tuesday, April 30th at 7:30

pm in the LMS Commons.

The 7th and 8th grade Concert Bands and the 7th/8th grade Orchestra will have their final concert

Monday, June 3rd (note the date change) at 7:30 pm in the Gym. We look forward to seeing

you there and having the students showcase their work.

As we finish out the year, students will be taking the state Classroom Based Performance As-

sessment (CBPA) in all Band and Orchestra classes in early June. For this assessment, students

only need to bring a writing utensil and a binder or other item to write on. Mr. and Mrs. Covill

will send out the exact dates as we get closer to June.

Thank you for your support of your students in the Instrumental Music Program this year!

CHOIR NEWS

Congratulations to LMS choir students on great performances in the month of April! Choir students performed Wednesday, April 10th for visiting 5th grade classes, and Saturday, April 13th for the Pullman Family Fair. The community audiences enjoyed the fun performances. Outstanding!!

LMS Spring Choral Concert Tuesday, May 28th The date for the LMS Spring Choral Concert is Tuesday, May 28th. This will be the final choral concert of the year and will include ALL LMS CHOIRS. Jazz Choir, Spartan Voices, 6th Grade Choir, and 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir students have been studying music and artists from many genres, past and present, and will perform music from a more current time period. Our LMS choir students are doing excellent work as they continue to develop musical skills and improve vocal technique. Several AWARDS will be handed out at this final concert in order to recognize outstanding individual student achievement. Keep up the good work choir students!

State Arts Performance Assessment

All students in 7th & 8

th Grade Concert Choir and the 6

th Grade Choirs will participate in a

Washington State Developed Performance Assessment for Music during the last week of May and

first week of June. Specific information for the testing will be presented in class to students as the

testing dates get closer. Please contact Mrs. James if you have any questions.

A reminder to all 7th grade students interested in auditioning for selection to the WMEA Junior All-State Choir as an 8 th grader next year ~ you must be enrolled in 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir for the 2019 – 2020 school year in order to audition. If selected, you will perform in Yakima, WA in February of 2020.**

A reminder to all 6th and 7th grade students interested in participating in the LMS Jazz Choir next year ~ you must be enrolled in 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir in order to

participate for the 2019 – 2020 school year. **

Practice Tips

Practice low, relaxed breathing by standing tall and pulling straight arms away from your legs during

your inhale, keeping your legs still, knees relaxed.

Practice singing tall (vertical), resonant vowels with facial expression by looking in a mirror to make

sure the “mustache” muscle and eyebrows are lifted, while pressing fingers at the first knuckle gently in on

cheeks to lower jaw. Sing this way through scales and songs, keeping the soft-palette lifted.

Practice clear articulation of consonants for words in all of your songs by exaggerating the sound of each

consonant.

Upcoming Events: Select choir students – Rotary Spaghetti Feed, Saturday, May 4, 4:45pm, LMS

All Choirs – Spring Choral Concert, Tuesday, May 28th, 7:30pm, LMS Commons

State Music Assessment, exact dates TBA

Washington State. These Science Olympiad members started working on events in September

and competed on March 8th in Spokane. Some events included building gliding airplanes and a

marble roller coaster that could be adjusted to bring a marble down from 10 seconds to 60 sec-

onds. Seth and Aditya earned second place in the middle school competition with their roller

coaster! Lydia and Lyneth built a cantilevered structure that held more weight than even most of

the high schoolers. Parker and Jesse placed 3rd in Mystery Architecture. Kuhu and Sarah re-

ceived 4th place in Circuit Lab. Brynn and Jasmine earned 4th in Experimental Design. Science

Olympiad will resume next September when we know what the next events will be. We hope to
