Smart and forward-looking high
school freshmen annually gather in
partner universities of the National
Hispanic Institute to compete in a
communications debate experience
called the Great Debate. Every
summer five sites and 1,000 high
achieving students address the
challenges of a modern-day Latino
community. They enjoy extended
friendships beyond their high schools
that include peers who all plan to
pursue college after high school.
Students from across the American
Mid-Atlantic, New England states and
parts of Latin America convene at
Villanova University in Philadelphia for
the Northeast Great Debate. For
almost twelve summers, our
Northeastern students have convened
with peers from Latin America and the
Caribbean, particularly from Puerto
Rico, Mexico, Panama, and the
Dominican Republic, for this
experience. The Northeast Great
Debate is an exchange of cultures
and traditions that engages
participants in global vision building
experiences. Located in the
picturesque Pennsylvania "Main Line,”
Villanova has been NHI's longest
standing partner in the East Coast
and is situated next to some of the
nation's top colleges and universities.
HOST COLLEGE
Villanova University, near
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will for ththe 12 year in a row, act as the host
site for 150 Northeast Great Debate
students. Every year Villanova opens
the doors of its 260-acre campus to
NHI students, and continues to serve
many of them throughout their
undergraduate studies. This Catholic
liberal arts institution is rooted in the
ideals of truth, unity and love; and a
community dedicated to service to
others. NHI shares in this mission,
and was proud to award Villanova the
2010 College of the Year Award at its
annual international conference,
Celebración. Villanova University
invites Great Debate participants to
spend six days on its campus to live
the college experience first hand.
For students who reside in one of the
aforementioned regions of the
Northeast, we strongly urge you to
take full advantage of this opportunity,
continue to develop yourselves
intellectually, and surround yourselves
with the caliber of peers who are also
on a success journey in life.
Students who gain admission to the
Northeast Great Debate receive
training under the supervision of NHI-
trained Education Directors. These
professionals and other NHI staff train
returning high school and college
student volunteers who previously
attended as participants and who
comprise the core staff of each
program. All volunteers and
consultants are required to undergo
detailed background checks prior to
participating. For the Northeast Great
Debate - No prior training is required
of participants. Instead, student
development takes place in
concentrated form once on campus.
Participants are required to pay a
student registration fee of US$620.
This does not include the cost of
transportation to and from the Great
Debate, which may be organized by
parent volunteers or school officials.
All students are required to purchase
their own copy of the book, Third stReality: Crafting a 21 Century Latino
Agenda. This text may be purchased
for less than $12 through
Smashwords.com or Amazon.com.
STUDENT TRAINING AND SUPERVISION
PRESENTING THE 2015 NORTHEAST GREAT DEBATE
BENEFITS ENJOYED BY GREAT DEBATE STUDENTS
Students who participate in learning experiences of the National Hispanic
Institute invariably find themselves having several advantages over their peers.
Advanced language skills play a big part in their academic achievement and test
scores on college admission tests. However, the impact of NHI programs goes
much further. Students feel comfortable in highly competitive environments.
Their self-expectations increase and they expand their knowledge of the world
around them. They especially gain a new-found appreciation for the Latino
community as a growing and important population. The academic caliber of their
peer group also heightens, as do their social networks as they prepare to venture
into the world of college. No better investment can be made by either schools or
parents than in encouraging their students to attend the Great Debate.
For students who reside in regions of
the Northeast and Latin America, we
strongly urge you to take full
advantage of this opportunity,
continue to develop yourselves
intellectually, and surround yourselves
with the caliber of peers who are also
on a success journey in life.
The Northeast Great Debate is
designed as an early learning
experience that introduces young
people to the world of leadership as
Latinos continue growing to a
population of one in three Americans
by 2050. Through this growth period,
one of our chief priorities is to identify
potential future leaders and engage
them in learning experiences that
expand their knowledge of the Latino
community not only throughout the
U.S., but also in Latin America. In the
Great Debate, increasing the
student's communication
effectiveness is our and principle
goal.

PAYMENT PROCESS
The 6-day Great Debate rate is $620, which includes a $20 application processing fee. This amount covers meals, housing, materials, and the tuition. Once the student receives notice of admission via email, s/he has 10 days to make a $100 security deposit. The final tuition of $500 is due within 30 days of receiving the deposit. Accepted applicants who cannot meet the payment deadlines should immediately contact us.
Each program of NHI, beginning with the Great Debate
for ninth grade youth, the Lorenzo de Zavala Youth
Legislative Session for sophomores, and the Collegiate
World Series for juniors, has been carefully designed to
provide students with particular skill development and
capacity building. Programs for college students and
alumni can be found online at www.nhi-net.org.
Nearly 100,000 students have attended NHI programs,
beginning with the first 90 in 1981 and now 3,000 who
come from throughout the United States and Puerto
Rico, with several Latin American/Caribbean countries
that today include Mexico, Panama, Argentina, and the
Dominican Republic. NHI is privileged to play a role in
educating an alumni base that produces a 98% college
enrollment rate (90% in four-year institutions), a 90%
college completion rate in less than five years, and a 67%
rate of enrollment in advanced degrees.
Thousands of volunteers and professionals have
developed the Institute, beginning with the leadership of
Ernesto Nieto's wife, Gloria de León, popularly known
around NHI circles as the chief architect of the LDZ.
Others have also played vital roles that include a highly
active board of trustees comprised mainly of former
participants. Over 1,000 alumni also volunteer their time
to administer the organization's 15 national/international
summer and fall projects, not to mention the services and
leadership of NHI alumni known as local Project
Administrators, some of which have participated for over
18 years. Finally, we can never say enough about our
College Register consortium (www.nhicr.org) of four-
year colleges and universities and in particular, our
annual college campus hosts. These institutions include
the University of Rochester, Colorado State University,
Our Lady of the Lake University, Cabrini College, the
University of North Texas, the City of Knowledge,
Elmhurst College, Augustana College, Villanova
University, the University of Texas, Austin College, the
University of San Diego, and the University of Tampa.
Without the contributions and support of these
institutions of higher learning and volunteers, leadership
programs like those conducted by NHI would not be
possible.
For your information, we are including the colleges and
universities that annually act as our members. Parents
and school administrators who wish to learn more from
NHI headquarters should write to us at NHI, P.O. Box
220, Maxwell, Texas 78656 or [email protected] or
Louis Tijerina at 512.357.6137.
