The general format of the tours is about exploring the College in terms of our ethos, curriculum and learning environment. Student Leaders assist on the tours and provide our guests with their unique insights and experiences as students of the College. The Middle School Leaders do a wonderful job and the pride they display in their school is often positively remarked upon by those on the tour. During the tours questions often arise as to enrolment possibilities and pathways. Sometimes, a number of misconceptions become evident and these are readily addressed. There seems to be a general understanding of the pathway through the South West Region of Catholic Schools whereby students progress from their Parish Primary Schools through Marymount College and Sacred Heart College Middle School and on to the Senior School. Other places become available once enrolment obligations are met and any queries should be directed to the SHCMS Registrar, Mrs Karen Wilmot. If anything, it will simplify the pathway for families enrolling at Sacred Heart College Middle School and it in no way diminishes other pathways. In fact, at a recent meeting of the Principals of the South West Region at Christ the King School, Warradale, much of the discussion focused on further developing the alignment of curriculum at the key points of transition – from primary to middle to senior schooling. We also discussed other issues of mutual concern including our IT infrastructure and data management systems. I would suggest that the level of collegiality across the region is very healthy! So, in this spirit of professional collaboration and mutual learning, the teachers of Marymount College and Sacred Heart College Middle and Senior Schools will gather this Friday to look specifically at the implications of the Australian Curriculum as it translates across Year 9 to Year 10 and subsequent issues. It will be a day of Professional Learning and an opportunity to further the relationships across the schools. In conclusion, best wishes to all our ‘dads’ and significant men in the lives of our students for this Father’s Day! From the Principal…Dear members of the Sacred Heart College Middle School Community

Principal ToursOver the past few weeks tours have been conducted at both the Middle School and Senior School. The general format of the tours is about exploring the College in terms of our ethos, curriculum and learning environment.

Student Leaders assist on the tours and provide our guests with their unique insights and experiences as students of the College. The Middle School Leaders do a wonderful job and the pride they display in their school is often positively remarked upon by those on the tour.

During the tours questions often arise as to enrolment possibilities and pathways. Sometimes, a number of misconceptions become evident and these are readily addressed. There seems to be a general understanding of the pathway through the South West Region of Catholic Schools whereby students progress from their Parish Primary Schools through Marymount College and Sacred Heart College Middle School and on to the Senior School. From the Head of SHCMS Dear Parents/Carers

It certainly has been and will continue to be a busy time at SHCMS. Winter Sport and other curriculum extension activities are now coming to an end and I would like to offer my sincere thanks to staff, parents and others in our community who contributed to their success. These activities consistently provide tangible opportunities to build relationships between school, home and the community.

This Friday is the annual Tri-Schools Day – which essentially provides an opportunity for the three schools (Marymount, SHC Middle and Senior) to come together in both a formal and informal way. This year at SHCMS, the morning session will be facilitated by Joe Millemaci (Director of students) and Ben Dray (Year 6 Leader of Learning & Wellbeing) and will focus on how positive psychology can impact on the learning and wellbeing of our students. The mid-morning session brings together staff from the different schools to work on aligning the Australian Curriculum with current practices and documentation. This is followed by Mass and late BBQ lunch. It promises to be a worthwhile opportunity in developing further networks within our extended teaching communities.

On Sunday we celebrate and acknowledge all the fathers in Australia. I often wonder that if we could put the commercial aspect of Father’s Day to one side and spend more time throughout the day focusing on our relationships with our own kids (or others we are close to) then we might even become better parents. As a dad of two young boys I am mindful of “practicing what I preach” when dealing with issues on the home front – one of them is the ability to say NO. Many of you may have read an article in last week’s paper written by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg (a leading child psychologist) in which he describes saying ‘NO’ to our children as ‘vitamin ‘N’ deficiency’. I also think that even more important that saying ‘no’ or even ‘yes’ is the conversation we have with our children around these decisions. Perhaps we may take this for granted or underestimate its importance? Below are 10 conversations you could consider having with your son(s) this Father’s Day:• Tell them they are loved.• Tell them who they are, their strengths, virtues, history and inheritance.• Tell them what they stand for.• Teach them to accept responsibility. It’s not sufficient to watch.• Teach them how to live in a community. • Teach them the value of hard work, and patience.• Teach sons to be tender and respectful of everyone.• Teach them to manage their finances.• Teach them to manage their health.• Teach them resilience that life is not

all fun and success.

I am not sure who said this but I think it’s certainly true, “Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys.” So I hope our ‘big men’ have a great day on Sunday and that there are one or two other spoils…

SHCMS MASSES

Celebrating Significant Men in the Lives of Young BoysAs Tim Mullin mentions in his article, people around Australia celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday September 7.

We all know that while the essence of this celebration may have had good intent, the commercialism has gotten out of hand! As I mentioned to a few boys this morning, I imagine Father’s Day is a big win for many large hardware stores!

In further conversation with the boys I suggested that for some people, their relationship with their dad is a really good one and for others the relationship is still developing. I also mentioned that for some people their dads are not part of their lives at all and this can be a huge relief or leave a big hole and yearning. We also noted that for some people they have only known a very sick dad and for others they have known their dad for a very short time before a premature death. All this diversity amid the commercialism of Father’s Day!

On Monday morning September 8, the Year 8s will celebrate the significant men in their lives with a breakfast followed by a Mass in the Marist Hall. Boys are invited to reflect on those men who are part of their lives, who matter to them, and who in some way are their mentors. The boys have invited fathers, uncles, grandparents, brothers, and friends to join in the celebration. Our hope is to shift the commercialism and to assist the boys to become reflective about who is significant in their lives and to let them know that they matter.

You too might think about who is significant in your life and let them know that they matter!

Leader: Creator God, we take the time to notice the emergence of Spring. Longer days, early bird calls, flowers and blossoms emerging and warming sun. The environment is changing around us. Reflection:Take a moment to pause as we begin this new season. What do I need to leave behind, what are new opportunities and what am I called to notice?

Year 7s Visit Oaklands Wetlands and ‘Go Green with Dr Dean’Term 3 and the Year 7 students are engaging in their curriculum through hands-on, real life experiences. Here are a couple of examples of what they have been up to:

On Wednesday 6 August all classes participated in a field trip to the Oaklands Wetlands on Oaklands Road. Here the students learnt about the important part wetlands play in cleaning water and assisting in the sustainable future for our water. We followed the path the water takes through the wetlands and learnt about the strategies in place to filter the water. Not only this, we also learnt about how wetlands create a perfect environment for a lot of native species as well as being a great recreational place for people to utilise. This field trip was combined with other geographical skills such as map construction and field sketches to produce a written report where the students ultimately made recommendations on the future directions of this wetland.

On Tuesday 19 August, Dr Deane Hutton presented to the Year 7 cohort. Dr Deane Hutton is a scientist and futurist who has previously been on TV appearing in programs such as the ‘Curiosity Show’ and ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday.’ He utlised his years of experience to make complex scientific concepts accessible to the students through hands-on experiments, often using household items that can be easily be recreated at home. The interactive ‘Going Green with Dr Deane’ presentation focused on the four areas of: earth, air, water and fire. This linked with the current Science and HASS units of study relating to water and sustainability. Here the students were challenged to think about their consumption of resources such as water and the future consequences of their decisions.

This term, students have learnt that only 3% of the Earth’s water is fresh and of this, only 1% is easily accessible for consumption. With this, they are thus realising the importance of managing this finite resource and being aware of their own personal water usuage. At home students have also been researching different types of rain gauges before constructing their own. With the rain of late these water gauges are certainly being put to good use at school.

An example of Positive Education – MindfulnessWe have all experienced times when we are totally absorbed in something we are doing, reading a novel, listening to music, watching a sunset or even working on a project. In these moments we are “in the zone” and our minds have blanked out the world and all its stresses. These are examples of mindfulness. Some of us are better attuned to seeking out these moments than others and will set aside time to be mindful. This can take the form of meditation or prayer.

Just recently a desolate spot on the school grounds has been transformed into a Zen garden. A Zen garden usually represents a miniature stylized landscape created through the arrangement of rocks, water features and plants and where gravel is raked into patterns to represent ripples in water. Producing these patterns in a Zen Garden can be quite a spiritual experience focusing attention on the process while disregarding its purpose or final outcome. This is a moment of mindfulness.

We are grateful to Pete Purton, Neil Williams and Jon Bowden from the maintenance and grounds team for preparing this area. It has also become a pleasant outlook from the office windows.

One of our Year 6 students, Joel, has worked with me to build a rake fashioned in a traditional Zen style. Joel and other students have used this rake to produce Zen patterns in the gravel. After a bit of practice Joel has become quite skilful in the use of the rake and has produced some inspirational patterns.

Things I like about the Zen Garden by Joel Slattery

“I like the Zen garden because it has gravel and you can make patterns in it. To make the patterns in the gravel you need a special rake.

With the Zen garden make sure you have some small bushes so that you can go around them and in the middle of them. When you do that you can make really cool patterns like circles, squares, dots and also lines.

When I am in the Zen garden I enjoy making all of the patterns and they are really detailed and interesting. One thing I like about the Zen garden is that it’s peaceful. Because you are concentrating on the Zen garden when making the patterns all of your thoughts and worries go away.”

We hope that this area will be used as a place where students and staff can retreat during the day, be at peace with themselves and experience a moment of mindfulness.

Middle School Musicians Captivate AudienceOn Sunday 31 August various Sacred Heart College Middle School students performed at the Stella Maris Fete. The Woodwind Ensemble, Drum Corp and Stage Band represented the College with a range of music performed to a captivated audience. All the musicians performed very well and displayed excellent musicianship and stage presence showcasing the hard work and talent of our boys. They should be proud of their efforts and achievements. It was a great opportunity for the boys to perform and show the community what musical opportunities are available to students at the Middle School.

Thank you to all the parents/carers for their ongoing support of the boys and the music faculty. Further, the students are to be commended on their efforts. Finally, thank you to Paul Lewis and Vanessa Saba for their continued guidance of the boys for what was a very rich musical experience.

Remember to clearly label your son’s uniform with his full name. The Student Services Officer will get lost property that is clearly labelled back to its owner as soon as possible. However, there are many unnamed articles currently in our lost property area. Items not collected will be sent on to the Uniform Shop for re-sale.

‘Fight’n the Kaiser’ by Sean Taylor 9.2 and Robert Heller 9.3!

‘Fight’n the Kaiser’ was a play that Brett Hunt individually performed to the whole of Year 9. The monologue consisted of 8,000 words which Brett memorised and recited fluently. His performance captivated all of Year 9, with an incandescent and humorous portrayal of the Australian experience in World War 1. Brett successfully created an enjoyable and educational atmosphere by using audience interaction and incomprehensible improvisation flawlessly. His acting was simply unbelievable, and the amount of dedication that he put into his work shows how important World War 1 actually is as a subject. During the play, Brett performed as different characters in the aftermath of the war, giving the Year 9 students a great insight into the impact the war left on the world.

MIDDLE SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS AND DUTY OF CARE

Please note the following in relation to official SHCMS school hours as referenced in our Handbook: • Students should not be on the school

premises before 8:00 am.• Supervision is provided in the Marcellin

Resource Centre from 8:00 am.• Supervision in the school grounds is

provided from 8:20 am.• The Marcellin Resource Centre closes at 4:00

pm.• Supervision is provided during CEA

trainings until 4:30 pm.• The Finance Office closes at 4:00 pm daily.• The Front Office is closed at 4:30 pm.

As a school, we cannot provide adequate duty of care/supervision for your son before 8:00 am and after 4:30 pm. It is very important that we adhere to these hours to ensure proper care of your son occurs. If there are extenuating circumstances in terms of picking up/dropping off your son, please phone the school so that alternative arrangements can be organised.

Out of hours care for Year 6 and 7 students is available at the Clovelly Park Primary School, telephone 8276 5366.

Our Kitchen Rules!The Year 8 elective group have had a cracking term in Food Tech. The boys have displayed exemplary culinary skills producing some ‘restaurant quality’ meals including tandoori chicken wraps, spaghetti bolognaise, Mexican tortilla cups and apple crumble to mention a few. With the delicious meals that have been created and consumed this group of boys have taken Food Tech to the next level.

Fee PaymentsA reminder that final payments for those paying by term instalments are due by Friday September 5. Please note that the Front Office will be closed on this day as all staff will be participating in the Tri-Schools program.

For those using BPay please only use 6 digits omitting the first ‘0’.

Year 7 Fogolar Furlan Club Italian ExcursionOn 18 and 25 August students from our Year 7 Italian classes were part of an excursion to the Italian Fogolar Furlan Club at Felixstowe.

Upon arriving at the club, boys were treated to an authentic Italian lunch consisting of platters of home-made pizza followed by generous serves of lasagna.

It was an interesting experience for the boys to observe a traditional Italian club where members of the Italian community meet to participate in card games and Tombola (Bingo) while enjoying regional food for lunch. The history and importance of such Italian clubs was explained to the boys by one of the long-serving members.

After lunch the boys were taken to the Boccedrome facilities where they were taught the basic rules of ‘Bocce’ by Mirella Mancini and two highly successful players who have competed internationally from the Bocce Federation of South Australia. Any boys who are interested in taking up the sport of Bocce have been invited to join Friday night training sessions which are run by members of the Bocce Federation (see below).

DENTAL CARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN

The School Dental Service is a Child Dental Benefits Schedule provider. All babies, children and young people under 18 years are welcome to attend.

Dental care is FREE for most children. Children who do not qualify for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule can also attend – a small fee will apply for each course of general dental care provided.

All dental care provided is FREE for preschool children.

SHCMS PUBLIC CALENDAR

To assist families in being able to easily access information about events and activities at the Middle School we have created a Public Calendar using Google Calendar.

The Middle School calendar of events is available via the SHCMS website (http://shcms.sa.edu.au). Click on the icon on the home page to access the calendar. From here you can select the month, viewing options and if you click on a particular event you will be able to see if there is any additional information about that event, access any attached documents (click on the ‘more details’ link in the pop-up speech balloon) or add the event to your own Google calendar.

Year 8 Italian Pen Pals meet with their Marymount College CounterpartsOn Wednesday 27 August, Year 8 students of Italian (Ms Skewes, Ms Callisto and Mr Mechis’ classes) invited Marymount College students of Italian to the Middle School.

The gathering began with a shared pizza lunch, during which boys were able to meet their pen pals. Boys have been communicating throughout the year with Year 8 Italian students at Marymount via pen pal letters written entirely in Italian. This visit also provided the boys with an opportunity to spend time with their pen pals whilst being involved in such activities as an Italian quiz and games of Tombola (Bingo).

Boys will continue to communicate with their pen pals until the end of the year.
