What in the world happened to summer? I can’t believe it is September! We had a great August and did a lot of activities and programs that everyone seemed to really enjoy. We had a “Grandma & Me Afternoon Tea” that was so much fun. I love it when we can have all ages together. Listening to everyone laughing and giggling really warms my heart. My mom brought her great granddaughter Adeline. It was so cute to see the relationship between them as the tea party went on. Thank you everyone for sharing your family and afternoon with us. We really had a great time. We also had a huge crowd for Bingo & Brats in Onekama at the beautiful Farr Center. We had the great Meals on Wheels crew come out and do the cooking and have some fun. The Onekama Lions Club grilled for us. It is always so nice to take our programs on the road. If you are interested in any of our ac-tivities or programs to head to your part of the county, give us a call and we will see what we can do. This month will be busy throughout the county with school starting, and I hope everyone keeps their eyes open for little ones walking across the street or getting off buses. I almost killed a little kid this summer when a ball came across the street and a little girl came running after it. I get so frustrated that we have so many parked cars on our streets. You can’t always see what’s coming. I sounded like my mom that day. I slammed on my brakes then I rolled the window down, checked to make sure she was alright, and then I scolded her for run-ning after the ball. I am sure I scared her but she

scared me to death. There will be a big event at the Little River Casino & Resort this month bringing seniors from all over Michigan to Manistee. On September 21, 2017, the Area Agency on Aging’s Advisory Board will be hosting Senior Empower Day. Their theme this year “Finding Slots for Seniors”, focuses on keeping you informed and involved – learning about services available to you and helping you ex-plore opportunities in your community. This is an all-day event with some great speakers and some fun surprises. The cost is $10, and that includes lunch. You need to register for this great event, so stop by the Senior Center before September 15th to get registered. I wanted to share that my husband (Tony) and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. We

always say laughter is what keeps us married. One of my favorite things to ask couples who stop in at the Senior

Center is how long have you been married. Do you know, some of the couples will say 40, 50, 60 I have even had a couple of 75s, and I am always so impressed. If you ask what is your secret, most of them will say patience, never go to bed angry or always say I

love you even if you are really mad. But some of the couples that I see that amaze

me even more are people who tell me 3, 5, 7 or even 10 years because these are people who most likely had a terrible loss in their lives and were lucky enough to find another person to love and share their life with. So here is to all of the couples, whether you are newlyweds or have been married forever, I wish you love, happiness and joy for all of your years to come. I hope you have a great September, and remember to try something new!

Fettuccine with Sausage & Kale

Ingredients

1 pound fettuccine1 pound spicy italian sausage,

removed from casing1/2 cup heavy cream

1 large bunch kale, trimmed and coarsely chopped

1/2 cup grated parmesan

PreparationIn large pot of boiling, salted water, cook pasta until al dente; drain. In large skillet, cook

sausage over medium-low until browned, about 7 minutes. Add 1/2 cup water and cream; simmer until reduced by half, about 7 minutes. Add kale; toss until wilted.

Remove from heat; toss with pasta. Sprinkle with parmesan.

Before there were weather apps for your smartphone, Doppler radar, or the National Weather Service, people looked to the signs of nature to prepare for what’s to come.

Cleveland weather guru, Dick Goddard, put to-gether a laundry list of these “signs” of nature that can predict a harsh winter ahead. They were featured in the 1978 Farmers’ Almanac, and it is still relevant today.

Here are the 20 Signs of A Hard Winter ac-cording to folklore:

1. Thicker than normal corn husks (corn in MI has thick husk this year)2. Woodpeckers sharing a tree3. Early arrival of the Snowy owl4. Mice eating ravenously into the home5. Early departure of geese and ducks6. Early migration of the Monarch butterfly7. Thick hair on the nape (back) of the cow’s neck

8. Heavy and numerous fogs during August (we have had in midmichigan)9. Raccoons with thick tails and bright bands10. Early arrival of crickets on the hearth 11. Spiders spinning larger than usual webs and enter-ing the house in great numbers (have had more than usual this year)12. Pigs gathering sticks13. Insects marching in a line rather than meandering14. Early seclusion of bees within the hive15. Unusual abundance of acorns16. Muskrats burrowing holes high on the river bank17. See how high the hornet’s nest, ‘twill tell how high the snow will rest”18. The orange band on the Woollybear (or Wool-lyworm) caterpillar: a narrow orange band warns of heavy snow; fat and fuzzy caterpillars presage bitter cold19. The squirrel gathers nuts early to fortify against a hard winter20. Frequent halos or rings around the Sun or Moon forecast numerous snow falls.

Flower Show, Walk With Ease August was a great month at the Senior Center. We went to Onekama to see the “Toadily Marvelous” flower show, we started a walking group, & we enjoyed a fun tea party with some “seniors in training.”
