Various empires, through cycles of conquest and defeat, bridged the gap between smaller trade routes creating the Silk Road and opened up trade among Europe, North Africa, and Asia - globalization.

The harsh terrain and climate of Southwest Asia (Arabian peninsula) was not good for agriculture and the people were primarily herding nomads. They were very adept at moving large herds and because they moved around many became more resistant to disease and were exposed to different economies and cultures.

Herding Bedouin (nomads) became very good at moving stuff (stuff you gather or produce to sell is called supply) along the Silk Road.

Citizens of Rome craved the silk fabric of China to the point that some Roman Senators tried to have it banned on the basis of “trade inadequacies and decency”, but the demand for the product was too great and as we know demand is what pushes supply.

Making Silk

1. The ancient Chinese bred special moths to produce the quality silk they wanted. Here are the steps

in the process for making silk: A moth lays 500 or so eggs and then die

2. Baby worms hatch from the eggs are fed mulberry leaves for one month until they are fat

3. The worms spin cocoons

4. The cocoons are steamed to kill the growing moth inside

5. The cocoons are rinsed in hot water to loosen the threads

6. Women would unwind the cocoons and then combine six or so fibers into silk threads

7. The threads are woven into cloth

8. The cloth is then pounded to make it softer

Nomads/traders traveling along the Silk Road were eventually equipped by professional merchants because trade was a way for merchants to become wealthy without being a king or lord.

Cities popped up along the trade route to provide caravans of traders with food, water, rest, and recreation. These towns became wealthy – Palmyra

Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 AD. His father died shortly before his birth, and he lost his mother at the age of six. The young orphan was then raised primarily by his uncle, for whom he worked as a shepherd. At age 9 (some sources say 12), he joined his uncle on a caravan to Syria.

As a young man, Muhammad worked as a camel driver between Syria and Arabia. Soon he established a career managing caravans on behalf of merchants. Through his travel first with his uncle and later in his career, Muhammad came into contact with people of many nationalities and faiths, including Jews, Christians, and pagans.

At age 25, Muhammad was employed by Khadija, a wealthy Meccan widow 15 years his senior. The two were married, and by all accounts had a loving and happy marriage.
