Sectional Organisation News

SALTFORD SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB It is with deep regret that I infonn you that two members of our bowls club have passed away in July. On Friday 9 July, Charles Sellick of our Monday group passed away in the RUH. Charles was one of the great characters who had his own individual, but very effective bowls delivery. Our sympathy goes to Kath, his wife, and other members of their family. On Wednesday 21 July, Dora Lavington died at her home in Keynsbam after a short iUness. She was a lively and popular member of the Wednesday group and served on the committee. She will be sadly missed and our deepest sympathy goes to her family and many friends. SALTFORD RECORDED MUSIC SOCIIITY The Society will hold its first meeting of the 1999/2000 season on Thursday 7th October at 7.45pm in the Avon Room. Mr Bob Porton wiU start the season off with his programme 'Music in my Life'. New members and visitors will be most welcome. Annual SUbscription £4 per person, SOp per meeting for visitors. On Thursday 4th November at 7.45pm in the Avon Room, Mr Desmond Hartnell will present his choice - 'Music, mostly home-grown'. New members and visitors are very welcome. SALTFORD SINGERS The Singers started their AutumnlWinter session on 7th September with a very good attendance; we are all keen to start rehearsals in earnest Our Winter concert is a little earlier this year, and the dates for your diaries are 19th and 20th November. There will be pieces by Elgar, Haydn, Mendelssohn,

5

Beethoven and Jolm Rutter, who has arranged Psalm 23 so beautifully for choirs. As well as preparing for our Saltford concert we have been invited once again to sing at The Cheshire Homes at Farrington Gurney on 12th N"ovember, so we have a busy time ahead. The Singers are still wishing to recruit new members, we now have one new bass singer through our Radio Bristol broadcast, SO please do come along to our Tuesday rehearsals in the Wansdyke Room if you are interested. We all look forward to seeing you at our next concert, when once again, we shall be singing music, just for you. SALTFORD PHOTOGRAPIDC CLUB Founded some 30 years ago, the Club is once again preparing for the Winter season. Our first meeting was early in September and on 4th October 1999 we have the chance to view a West Country Portfolio of prints put together by photographers in the area. We have an Audio Visual programme by local photographer, Charles Jackson, on 1st November next. All meetings are in the Wansdyke Room at Saltford Hall starting at 7.3Opm. Why not come and meet us? Photography is in the eye of the beholder, not necessarily in expensive equipment!

..... Continued from page 13 First of all, the OPERA bill We do not perform Opera, not even Light Opera. The Group was fonned just over 30 years ago and did, because ofthe popularity and the available talent, perform much of Gilbert & Sullivan. Times change however and the increasing popularity of the (mainly American) musical, KLOG also changed and started to perform such shows as OkJaholma, Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music eLe. So this is KLOG tcx1ay! Still going strong after 30 years and still aiming to entertain and give pleasure to a local audience. Our main show is in the Spring and a more diverse show, with a varied programme, in the Autumn. We are currently rehearsing "Curtain Up" which will be showing at SaJtfurd Hall October 13th - 16th. As with most similar organisations, we have problems! One is finance ... even with a seU out we made a loss on Me and My Girl!.... and the other is obtaining new (preferable young male) members. Once you can persuade them to try it, many get hooked. You only have to strut your stuff in jeans, cowboy boots and a stetson, shoot craps in a gangster suit in Guys and Dolls and listen to the applause to get that happy feeling that .... There's no Business like Show Business. We rehearse Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.3Opm at Broadlands School and, if you feel at al1 interested, can sing. dance act. ... why not just call in and watch a rehearsal without any commitment. Alternatively give me a calIon 01225 400256 and I will answer any of your queries. - Keith Richards, Chairman Saltford Floral Club Our year is progressing well and our programme of one month a Demonstration and the next a 'hands on' experience has

lS

proved popular. People like being given the opportunity of creating their own arrangement and appreciate the opportunity of doing something totally different under the guidance of expert teachers. At first, . we seemed apprehensive about tackling the 'new' European styles but have all enjoyed the challcnge of the various designs proposed . We had our Club Outing to Pam Lewis in June to see her garden - the forge where she makes the most amazing wrought iron designs. She also gave a superb demonstration in the afternoon. after the wonderful lunch she had provided. with her home-made sweets to follow. All this and transport from 'door to door' ... well, the Crown at Saltford! Our two fund raising events were both a great success . The Coffee Morning at Maureen Sanders' was well attended. The sun shone and blessed the event so we could enjoy her delightful garden with its wonderful array of flower arrangers' plants. Many of us went homc with a new treasure to plant in our own gardens - but do we have green fingers I wonder! Then Audrey Ford, our President, invited us to use her garden for our Wine & Cheese Evening ... another occasion to be out of doors, though the weather decreed otherwise! We started off in the intermittent sunshine determined we would sit in the garden. onJy to be chased indoors by the first rain since July. A few brave people sOJck it out sitting under large coloured umbrellas, which from the upstairs must have looked like a mini balloon festival ... but even they were forced indoors, filling Audrey's home with many people, much fun and laughter and the demands of one of her famous quizzes. This time, being in such close .. ... .. . ...... continued on page 17.

Need I say, that close to each other as we were, one was still able to 'raise one's arm' and enjoy the flowing wine! So many demonstrations so far '" all different and giving excellent afternoons. In September, we commence autumn with the return of Liz Griffiths ( a previous committee member who moved to Devon some while ago) giving us 'Nature's Every Fair Device' as her theme for the afternoon's demonstration. This will be followed in October with Margaret Bayliss giving us the last Practice Class before Christmas, so corne along and join us in making 'Spice Posies' . November should prove particularly entertaining as we welcome Shirley Preston on the 23rd with her interpretation of 'Christmas' ... a magical word that conjures up so many memories for us all. There will be hot mince pies and tea to follow and the sales table, as ever, will be loaded with goodies for everyone to buy. In case you have forgotten , we always meet on the 4th Tuesday in the month with demonstrations starting at 2.15pm for 2.3Opm, and practice classes 2.00pm sharp. Saltford Treefoil Guild Saltford Guiding movement has lost a well respected chairwoman of the trefoil Guild. Lilith Reakes, who died on Friday 6th August at the RUH was a founder member of Saltford Trefoil Guild. She will be sadly missed but always remembered for her enthusiasm and dedication to Trefoil and the Guiding movement.

It was a get together of friends from both Afternoon and Evening W.I.s .. . and included a presentation of a bouquet to

LADIES (18-80)

Audrey Ford who has been a W.1. member for SO years. It started in the ga.rden where patt aod salads were served. but hurriedly moved indoors because of a rainstonn .... but this did not spoil the happy spirit., and eventually everyone was squasbed in and everyone served with a super selection of 'Puds" and coffee. On October 16th a 50150 Nearly New sale is planned .. a visit to the Post Office Sorting office is on October 27th with a few seats still available. SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk to the Council- Mrs M LM Freemantle, 489, Bath Road, Saltford, Bristol BSJI

3BA Tel: 01225 4()(}()5 QUAll1Y OF liFE IN SAL1FORD - QUESlJONNAIRE Members of the Parish Council are keen to have your views on what matters to you most about living in Saltford - the activities on which you would want your Parish Council to most concentrate its efforts, time and funds. A list has been drawn up on the back page of this issue of SCAN, but please note down any other matters which concern you. LOCAL TRANSPORT MATTERS All residents are urged to attend the public meeting to be held on Monday 4th October at Saltford Hall at 7.00pm. B&NES Councillor (also Parish Councillor) Francine Haeberling has arranged for representatives of the Highways Agency and B&NES Council to be present, to discuss the main traffic problems of the A4 and to explore ways of making this road less of a problem for Saltford residents. BATH & N E SOMERSET LOCAL PLAN CONSULTATION B&NES Council will be holding a public event at Saltford Hall on Thursday 25th November 1999 from Ipm - 8pm, to seek residents' views on the key planning issues facing the District over the next 12 years, and possible strategies. This plan will form the basis of policies that affect the potential land use in and around Saltford - particularly important at this time because of the pressure for new housing on Green Belt land. LOCAL TRAFFlC SCHEMES Under a new system to deal with hundreds of requests for traffic schemes submitted to

.B&NES Council each year, the Parish Council had been asked to submit a shortlist of three schemes only which it feels should have top priority, for the next financial year starting April 2000. The Parish Council bas put forward three schemes:

I. 20mph speed limit at Higb Street (from its junction with Beech Road) through The Shallows to its junction with the A4; 2. Traffic calming measures in Montague Road; and 3. Resurfacing Nonnan Road.

There is no guarantee that these will be carried out (they will be subject to the normal prioritising system used by B&NES throughout the district) but it appears that no other large schemes other than safety matters will be considered . The A4 Bath Road excluded as this trunk road is not B&NES Council's responsibility. COUNCaLORSURGERY Councillor Malcolm Guthrie will be available in the Parish Council office (through Davies & Way estate agents) on Saturday 16th October from lOam - Ilam to discuss any matters relating to Saltford. FOOTPATH WALK The Parish Council is organising another footpath walk starting in Salt ford - a longer one this time (approximately two hours to Kelston Round Hill, Racecourse, Northstoke and back along the river, starting from Queen Square at lOam on Sunday 10th October - all are welcome. A shorter, more local walk will be arranged next time.

Madeleine Freemantle, Clerk
