The first school in this settlement was a log one, approximately 1060.
The first settlers came ir 1846 1848 1849
Mcilree, Hutton Ferguson Geo�ge and James Ferguson
It is said that the pupils used to float their rough boat s to the school
door, and tie them there in the spring of the year. Old res i dents recal being
sent out to cut a switch when in need of punishment. This sc�ool was sold to
Ricrard col1orv for $4 in 1879, and a new one built, called the Red School . This
was located where the White School is now, but on higher ground. It was a frame
bui cing.
The present school was built in 1915, a one-storey building with frame
entrance porch on stone foundations. Both have metal-clad roofs, and b�ick
chimney of the bracket type. The interior had hardwood floor, frame wa �scoating
and metal-cl ad veneer walls and ceiling. There is a separate frame shed, used for
storage of wood. It was heated by a wood-burnirg stove. There is a we 1 located
in the school yard .
In 1955 the value of the schoo was $13,420, replacement value. Actual cash
value $11,270. An addition to the school to accommodate children from South Branch
SPction was done in 1962. Beginning in 1967, this additional room was used as a
Kinder arten classroom on alternate days with Algonquin {the teacher a]ternated ) .

It is interesting to note that the Board of Trustees paid 25¢ interest several times, on money needed to pay the salary to the teacher.

In 1893, they paid $8 to someone to light fires in the school for 1 year.

This week's photo is that of another rural school no longer in existence: S.S. No. , Herron's Corners. This is the student body of 1924 and the type of "plumbing" used in those days may be
seen in the background. The outdoor privy was a fixture of all rural school yards in those days,

The first school at Herron•s Corners, then called Bissell's, was built on
land donated by ,dward Bissell, Sr., about 1855. It was of stone, and stood on the
same site as the present sc�ool. In the Autumn of 1876, it was burned, and then
replaced by the brick school. The stone school faced south, the stone steps to it
are still to be seen on the south of the brick structure.
The brick school was built in 18??. The trustees at the time were GEORGE
WHITEWORTH, ASAHEL �FIGHT, and SAMUEL TOfTEN. JAMES WALKER did the masonry and
ACE BISSELL built the woodshed. It was a one-storey brick building, with frame
entrance porch, both with wood shingled roof. The brick chimney forms part of the
building wall. There was a small frame bell-tower. The�e was hardwood flooring,
frame wainscoattng with wood lathe and plaster walls, and wood lathe and plaster
ceiling. A frame woodshed was attached, and a well located in the school yard.
