In my heart I belIeve that desIgn always wIns.

Apple has been thinking different since the days it did

business out of a garage. i’ve lent my thinking to the cause

for over a decade, producing advertising and graphic

design for chiat\day and directly for Apple. Writer tom

Witt and i have created a catalog of iconic ideas springing

from the minimalist elegance of the Apple product line.

i love this company.

amaRanthine

bOOk design

Amaranthine is greek for “color that never dies”: an

apt descriptor for this large-format, hardcover book

featuring the aviary collection of the Museum of boston.

Photographer Mark Laita captured the specimens in over

250 plates depicting a wild diversity of color, shape and

form. My design challenge: get out of the way and let

nature shine.

Why should anyone be force-fed advertising they don’t

really care about? AdPerk ceO barry soicher had a neat

idea: let consumers choose their own commercials in

exchange for rewards. My job was to capture this upstart

spirit in branding, website design and marketing materials.

Archstream has a divergent view of radio and tV. While

some see stagnation, they see sky-high potential. to the

delight of station managers (and financial institutions

supporting them), Archstream set out to turn broadcast

media into scalable, profitable digital businesses. All they

needed was a branding platform as fresh as their thinking.

While “green” gets all the press, “blue” needs attention

too. teaming with rick smolan, creator of the bestselling

Day in the Life and America 24/7 series, i helped produce

Blue Planet Run: a visual study of earth’s fresh-water

crisis. With over 250 photographs by the world’s top

photojournalists, it focuses on challenges and solutions,

and celebrates the “water heroes” who are quite literally

saving the world.

brand an artist whose work includes references from

traditional realism to classic modernism? My solution

Funktion was a classic rock band from the 1970s, based in

Austin, texas. though their music is lost to history (or was

it banished?), their image lives on. As a former Austinite

heart. i gave the band a logo and branding platform that

reflected the gritty sound that made them popular.

every guitarist dreams of owning the perfect guitar. eric

schoenberg dreams of making them. His guitars are

sought for warmth, clarity and their ability to mesh with

their owner. so it was that my poster and ad campaign,

built on the theme “guitars that become you,” struck a

particularly good chord.

it’s difficult for the unenlightened to fathom, but those

who have feasted at LA’s sushi sasabune consider it a

religious experience. this may come as a shocker, but —

it’s all about the fish. A fact that did not go unnoticed

when i created sasabune’s first branding campaign. it

makes me hungry just to look at it.

the people who create individuals’ images need an

image of their own. sync salon not only offers a range

of services, they offer a higher class of service featuring

european-trained hair stylists. theirs is the first branding

system i’ve built from a single strand of hair.

tomatoheads

LOgO | PAckAging | Web design

tomatoheads is a restaurant that is both healthy and fast,

which makes it a perfect alternative to the typical greasy

burger joint. What better way to express this than with

a pair of ambulatory tomatoes? this playful treatment

connotes the quality nature of the menu, along with the

fun atmosphere of the restaurant.

the creativity of man is visible everywhere in this world —

even in devices of torture. Photographer Mark Laita was

granted access to this rarely seen collection housed at the

Musea della tortura in san gimignano, italy. My challenge

was to help present 17th century europe’s most creative

nightmares. Hopefully they won’t make this into a movie.

some of today’s most interesting and eye-catching

designs were born before many of us. urbanburp reaches

into the past to deliver rare, vintage fabrics and high-

quality interior design services. What they needed was a

branding campaign that literally captures the best of two

different worlds: then and now.

veRdigRis

LOgO | brAnding | Web design

Verdigris is a sausalito-based architectural firm designing

exquisite structures in a decidedly modern style. to

help communicate their values, i designed a logo that

expresses a passion for shape, form and color — and an

online catalog of site photography that echoes the theme

with subtle animation elements.

vizza

LOgO | Web design

Vizza is vertical pizza. A new angle on an old favorite. it

was discovered in a small italian village by two vacationing

pizza lovers who couldn’t leave the taste behind. My logo

presents the crust in its heretical “V” shape and stacks

the type accordingly. in-store graphics feature famous

italians and their Vizza.

without walls: museum multimedia

LOgO | brAnding | Web design

Fine art gets some muscle. to help build understanding

and appreciation for the arts, Without Walls produces

elegant, interactive programming for art museums

and galleries. A graphic id that plays off the traditional

museum entrance pin gives them purpose and humanity.

ride ’em, rope ’em, brand ’em —with an emphasis on

branding. Wyoming Outfitters needed a logo, signage and

brand cut from a slab of beautifully rusted cor-ten steel.
