The Scarborough Hospital (TSH)Two Sites
Birchmount Campus and General Campus• In addition, there are six satellite sites
Who We Are• The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) is Canada’s largest urban
community hospital. • Serving a community of almost one million people • TSH has 3,400 staff, more than 700 physicians, and 600 active
volunteers.• We have on average 99, 915 Emergency visits between both
sites• We have 8 patient care areas: Maternal Newborn, Emergency,
Medicine and Specialized Geriatrics, Family Medicine, Mental Health Services, Surgery and Nephrology and Dialysis
Mission, Vision and Values
• After extensive community consultations with some 1,400 stakeholders the hospital launched a new Mission, Vision and Values.
• Our Vision is:“To be recognized as Canada’s leader in providing the best healthcare for a global community.”
Who is this global community?
• The Scarborough Hospital services Canada’s most diverse population.
• Two thirds of the Scarborough population are visible minorities compared with the rest of Toronto
• More than 50% of Scarborough residents speak a primary language other than English and French.
• The top 3 languages spoken following English are: Chinese (other than Mandarin/Cantonese), Cantonese and Tamil.
Who is this global community?
• In 2006, 55% of the total Scarborough population were foreign-born
• Recent immigration to Scarborough by country of birth are from People’s Republic to China, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Afghanistan, Iran and South Korea.
• One in four of the Scarborough population are considered to be low income.
Global Community = Diversity
• ‘Our Global Community’ simply means the ‘Diverse Population’ we work with and serve:
– Diversity are all the ways we are different. It can include, but is not limited to, economic status, gender, immigration status, age, sexual orientation, religion, ability, mental health, education, ethnicity, culture and even different professions etc.
Why is this Vision important to TSH?
• Our hospital Vision is the guiding force which provides us the opportunity:
– to remove barriers to include rather than exclude– to recognize, embrace and to respect differences– to embed within the entire organization an inclusive
and welcoming environment for both our diverse staff and global patient community through our policies, practices and programs

Our Global Staff Community • Our TSH Vision is about harnessing the potential of all
staff by maintaining that plurality of perspectives and life experiences in The Scarborough Hospital can only boost excellence, creativity, innovation, service delivery and also provides increase access to networks.
• What are the tools and resources required across disciplines in serving a diverse population? Examples:
– Recruitment of staff that can speak additional languages– Included in all staff performance development learning plans
in diversity fluency
Our Global Patient Community
• Our TSH Vision is about truly providing patient and family-centered care to a diverse population by recognizing, respecting and embracing their unique needs.
• What are the barriers to patients accessing our services. Examples :
– Identified the ideal patient experience through research input of 2,885 patients, friends and family members
– Ensuring effective interpretation program– Examining all life stage experiences through a diversity
lens – from birth to death practices– Addressing food, gown, accessibility issues
Our Global Scarborough Community
• Our TSH Vision is about building partnerships with Scarborough community partners in better serving and advocating for our global community.
• Examples :– Working with Long Term Care Facilities to better
care for our seniors through electronic discharge summaries, geriatric nurses etc.
– Community outreach workshops to settlement and various community agencies on patient rights/obligations
Moving Forward
• Looking to be an incubator for research in diversity and equity that can be incorporated into our program and service delivery
• TSH is on a journey to embed our Vision
