NAIDOC WEEK
This week we celebrated NAIDOC week with students participating in an Aboriginal Outback experience that took place at school. This opportunity assisted the students to deepen their knowledge of Australia. The experience included a didgeridoo show, Aboriginal storytell-ing, a display of artefacts, bush survival skills, Aboriginal songs and dancing, face painting and interactive Aboriginal art. The students appeared to enjoy the experience and took part in creating an Aboriginal artwork using their handprints. Thank you Mrs Karevski and Mrs Johnson for organising this event. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
What a fabulous event! Thank you to Miss Winsley and all of the staff and parent volunteers who organised and supported this well run carnival. Well done to all of the students who participated and competed, demonstrating good sportsmanship. Carnival ribbons will be handed out at the K-2 and 3-6 Assemblies this Friday 10 August and age champions will be announced at the Gold Card assembly in Week 4 on Friday 17 August.

Please be aware that all parking on our school site is allocated for staff. I understand that

doing so, please be mindful that staff will be entering the carpark during this time as well. Please
use the marked bays provided and do not park along the side of the drive way, this needs to be
clear for cars coming in and going out. Thank you for your support with this.
SCHOOL WEBSITE
In previous correspondence I informed you that the new school website would be published on
Thursday 9 August, unfortunately this date has been moved back. We are hoping that the site
will go ‘live’ by the end of Week 5 (Friday 24 August). Thank you for your patience with this.
PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY
As I recently discussed in the P&C Meeting held on Tuesday 1 August, all personal information
provided to the school by yourselves as parents or carers is protected under the Privacy and
Personal Information Protection Act 1998. This Act ‘provides for the protection of personal
information held by government agencies and imposes obligations on government agencies in
the collection, storage, use and dissemination of personal information’. ‘Personal information
held by the Department of Education and Training includes information on students, employees,
parents, guardians, caregivers, clients, employers, business partners and associates’.
I know that on occasion parents ask for information to be provided about other students within
the school in relation to their needs, behavioural consequences and diagnosis. Please be aware
that I am unable to provide you with this information under the Privacy and Personal Information
Protection Act 1998. As a school we always ensure that any concerns raised are managed in
line with school and Department policies, to provide the best possible outcome for all involved.
As a school we will always provide as much information as we are able to depending upon the
circumstances. Thank you for your support and understanding with this.

BOOK WEEK AT RYDE EAST
Our library is celebrating book week. This year’s theme is “Find Your Treas-
ure”. This term we will be reading the short listed books and focus is visual
literacy. Our students will be learning the skill to become visual critics.
Where we will be viewing the CBCA shortlist, making, creating and critiquing
illustrations that accompany the shortlisted books.
I am also co-ordinating a book swap this term.
Books will be collected during library lessons from Week 3 till Week 5: Monday 6rd
August -
Friday 24th August 2018.
Students can bring a book of their choice. The book can be either fiction or non-fiction. It must be
a book that you child isn’t reading. We must insure the book is in an acceptable condition, that it
is looked after; that pages are not ripped, drawn on or dirty. Also the book must be age appropri-
ate so that others in your child’s year will enjoy the book. Students will have the opportunity to
collect their new book in week 6 during their library lesson (From Monday 27th August till Friday

WORKING BEE FOR YEAR 1 FAMILIES
Although there was only short notice after the holidays, our wonderful Year 1 class parent team managed to stir the enthusiasm of the grade and we achieved a very pleasing attendance of over 80 at last Sunday’s Working Bee… and in keeping with the spirit of National Tree Day, we did lots of
planting!
Unexpectedly there were others on site, including painters who are still finishing their work on the premises, so once again not all planned work could be done. Tasks we did accomplish in-cluded:
Raking and rotary-hoeing the soft-fall material around the playground equipment
Shredding dead leaves and branches
Lifting bay tree pots and sealing the ground to prevent spread of roots
Tidying up the Peter Rabbit gardens
Planting the donated clivia and agapanthus plants along the back wall of the administration building
Brush cutting and clearing rubbish, rocks and fallen twigs from the playground
Weeding gardens and spreading mulch
Weeding and cleaning along the main driveway to the hall carpark
Pressure cleaning the tennis courts
We all enjoyed the usual morning tea and barbecue lunch (complete with salad trimmings!) thanks to the organisation of our class parents and oth-ers who brought food to share.
Next working bee will be for families of Year 4 students on Sunday 26 August.
Working bee schedule for the remainder of the year is Year 2: Sunday 23 September, and Year 3: Sunday 28 October.
Please record your dates in your calendar.

Calling for Banking Coordinator/s and volunteers! First of all I would like to thank our volunteers: Simone Haslehurst, Katrina Samawi, Kim Rosenfeld and our grandmothers Rhondda Inchley and Helen Fraser for their continuous effort over the years. Also thank you to Emma Thompson, Rose Darani and Ayesha Ahsan for their help, but due to circumstances are no longer able to volunteer. Our students really enjoy participating in the School Banking program and to keep this program running we need more volunteers as a few of us will be leaving Ryde East at the end of the year. We do not want to stop banking as we don’t have enough volunteers or coordinator/s to take over. The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator/s to facilitate the banking, distri-bution of School Banking rewards and Newsletter articles. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week (Thursday) and the team and I will be provide support in how to run the program. No banking experience needed. You can also do the Banking Coordinator posi-tion with a friend if you want to share the responsibilities. Even though this is my last year, I will still be around to help. We also need Volunteers to process the banking on Thursday. You just need to count the money in the student bank book and make sure it all adds up at the end. As a Coordinator or Volunteer you will only have to do 3-4 shifts a term and it’s a great way to meet other mums and grandparents on the team. Yes, grandparents and dads can join the team too!!! If you are interested in volunteering or would like to know more about the program, you can contact us via: email at [email protected], by popping a note in your child’s bank book, by dropping in one Thursday morning or phone/text Elspheth Orlandi on 0402 850 044.

Vacation Care report
The July vacation care was full of incredible activities, exciting incursions and amazing excur-sions. The children loved the Gala Fun Day Out where they were able to go on so many differ-ent activities. The Fun Day Out had something for everyone; jumping castles, laser tag, inflata-ble courses, bubble soccer and so much more. One of the incursions that the children really en-joyed and maximum number attended was the GO Kart. They also enjoyed the wheels day. They rode around and around, spending the day outside and learnt many different road rules. Better yet, the day didn’t consist of any injuries! Of course, the favorite day of vacation care was, Movies and McDonalds. The children also enjoyed the Disney on Ice and visited the Aus-tralian Museum. The weather held up really well and all in all vacation care went really well, en-joyed by both staff and children.
Term 3, week one and two report
It’s almost unbelievable how quickly this year is going by, term three already! The week was full of free play as the children caught up with their friends after the holidays. OOSH buzzed with conversations about holiday fun, including those days spent in Vacation Care. Children has been doing craft based on Disney, Space and Antarctic theme. In terms of our outdoor activi-ties, we continued to combine both free time for children to individually play with sport equip-ment of their choice, as well as organized activities based on suggestions from the children. Ac-tivities for first few weeks included handball, volleyball, dodgeball, equipment play and skipping. Overall, the weeks was extremely enjoyable for the children as we continued to get back into routine after school holidays.
