My Writing Philosophy

As a technical communicator, I treat every assignment seriously, and I view each assignment as

an opportunity to showcase my abilities. I believe that every assignment provides the possibility

to grow and change as a writer as well. I view writing like water. Water has many forms, and it

can adapt to its environment. Water can come with great force, or it can be very gentle and

subtle. Water is balanced, elegant and consistent. This is the way that I strive to write.

My work features a strong emphasis on computers and technology. I focus on presenting a very

technical field in a creative manner. In doing so, I wish to make the information from the field

more accessible to more people. I achieve this by making my writing very concise and complete.

I conduct thorough research and fully understand a topic. Then, I synthesize the material for all

audiences. I believe that consistency is the key to being successful.

My experience as a technical communicator has allowed me to edit and produce a variety of

documents including: websites, brochures, product descriptions, advertisements and instructional

booklets. This portfolio seeks to demonstrate my genesis as a technical communicator. While

focusing on computers and technology, I will also include documents that transcend the field in

order to show my depth as a technical communicator.

“Be like water. Water can flow, or it can crash. If you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup.”

– Bruce Lee

Writing Like Water: My Personal Philosophy 2

Managing Microsoft’s Website 3-4 This piece focuses on elegance and simplicity. The original page was too cluttered and had too much happening.

The revised home page, for Microsoft, focuses strictly on the Microsoft Sync product. The paragraph that was

added to the page draws the user into navigating through the website. I was resourceful with the use of Photoshop

Elements. I also showed strength with the text revision and the graphical component of the page.

Fixing Fliers 5-6 The artifact revision shows my depth as a technical writer. It demonstrates elegance by simplifying the design of the

flyer. I removed the busy image elements, included the organization’s values, and included a slogan that I found on

another flyer for Student Involvement. This revision also exhibits resourcefulness, by gathering information from a

variety of sources. It also displays how I can adapt to my environment, just like water.

Describing OpenOffice.org 7-8 Product descriptions are crucial to successfully marketing and advertising a product or service. A creative, balanced

and complete description of a product or service, can give it that extra edge over the competition. This revision

demonstrates my ability to creatively reformat information in a manner that is balanced in composition, and also

portrays a product accurately.

Coding Elegance 9-10 This artifact revision demonstrates my ability to use my knowledge of computer programming, to appropriately

document and revise a program’s source code. This revision demonstrates my ability to synthesize very technical

information, in a very accessible way. It displays elegance, consistency and completeness.

Kathy’s Place for Hope (Group Work) 11-14 This compilation of revisions includes two pages from a local non-profit’s website. The information that was

gathered for these works shows resourcefulness and strength. Successful completion of the project required

organizing a group of three individuals, researching a non-profit organization, meeting with the non-profit, and

revising the website text. While the final products are a collaborative effort; elements such as organization, design

and the editing of the documents were my responsibility. I also produced the “Our Philosophy” section on the

“About Us” page. The final products are complete. They also exhibit balance and elegance, both in their designs

and content.

About Us Revision

Mission Statement

At Kathy’s Place for Hope, we are determined to provide a safe place to assist grieving children after the

death of a loved one, and to help whole families to communicate through the pain. With our joint

efforts, we help transform these affected families through the grieving process and give them a new

appreciation for life.

Our Objectives

To provide a safe place for children to understand emotion, thoughts, and memories

To encourage a community where sharing grief is welcomed and appreciated

To help create intimate communications between all members of the family

To give caregivers a way to connect with other others in similar situations struggling to care for a grieving child, while grieving themselves

To allow everyone to grieve in their own way

Our Philosophy

After the loss of a loved one, each member of the family goes through the bereavement

process. At Kathy’s Place for Hope, we believe the best way through the bereavement process

after the loss of a loved one is to be surrounded by a strong, loving support system. With this in

mind, we have designed a program to remember loved ones while being transformed through

the healing process. The program is led by trained volunteers who focus on the child’s

perspective and finding ways to increase communication, particularly by interacting in groups.

By encouraging group communication, the children realize that they are not alone in dealing

with grief. This helps them reach a better place of understanding and acceptance. It is through

the understanding and acceptance of loss, that the children are freed from their cocoons of

grief and transformed like butterflies.
