And what about picking the tree? You have to wonder round endlessly at the same old place, examine, pick-up and twirl each and every one, before going back to the very first one you all liked. Then, when you have paid what is now an enormous amount for such a seasonal commodity, you realise you can’t get it home because it is too big for the car or you have forgotten the straps to tie it to the roof. Then, the season of goodwill soon evaporates.

Please, at least let’s get bonfire night scratched off the calendar first before dropping off the letters to Santa. In the meantime can I be first to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

CHRISTMAS ISCOMING AND THEFESTIVITIES HAVEALREADY BEGUN.Yes, I know you have probably just packed away your Team GB t-shirts, filed photographs from the summer holidays and put the lawn mower back in the shed, but the season of goodwill is just around the corner. And it seems to get earlier every year.

You can already have a flutter on whether or not it will be a White Christmas and also who will top of the pops this Yuletide. My tips, for what they are worth, are December 25 being the hottest day of the year and Cliff Richard back at number one. But I could be wrong and it is interesting to note that the odds, which constantly change, have been available from the bookies well before summer turned to autumn and the leaves started falling from the trees.

The next thing will be a mad dash to get trick or treat, or Halloween in old money, out the way and the tree up and decorated, cards sent and presents delivered. Probably easier to have everything wrapped up, in some cases literally, by November 1 and then we can start buying our Easter eggs.

It is all getting a little out of hand. You can already go into some shops and be serenaded by a musical background of seasonal tunes and carols. No wonder some of the assistants have had enough well before December.

What is wrong with the old traditions of leav-ing everything until the last minute? Is it not more festive to wait in a Post Office queue for what appears to hours on end and then

Morpeth Footpaths Society.Morpeth Footpaths Society walks vary in distance from 5 miles to up to 12 miles. They often take place outside of Morpeth (for example, in the Cheviots or in the Berwick area) but for those who would prefer shorter walks in Morpeth, the Walking for Health Group meets every Tuesday morning at 10.30 am at Morpeth Leisure Centre. These walks are more gentle than the Footpath Society walks and vary from 1 – 2 hours in length and are led by fully trained volunteers. An example of recent walk which took place on a glorious sunny morning is the Newmin-ster Abbey walk. Twenty-eight walkers set off from the Leisure Centre, crossing the Elliott Bridge into the park and turned right to walk along the Promenade beside the River Wansbeck. We crossed under the Oldgate Bridge and walked through the area known as High Stanners (the name comes from the movement of stones deposited by the flow of water) past the famous stepping stones. From the Stanners you can see the ‘poop deck’ which was the summerhouse of one of Morpeth’s most distin-guished residents, Admiral Lord Collingwood, who used to walk up and down the riverside path in the back garden of his home on Oldgate as if he were still on one of his ships. We walked past the sewer gas lamp which was invented by Joseph Webb in 1890’s and the cottage with the whalebone arch, along Lady’s Walk (which was the main path to Newminster Abbey and dedicated to the Virgin Mary), until we came to Lowford Bridge. A couple of members of the group left us at this point to return to the start point but the rest continued on, past the remains of Newminster Abbey which was home to Cistercian monks from the larger Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire until the dis-solution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII. The footpath continues through a kissing gate and carries on towards Mitford. However we turned left (watched by some of the most placid sheep I have ever encountered on a walk) and climbed up the hill to the Kirkhill Estate. After a breather at the top of the path we traversed the estate re-entering Carlisle Park on Curley Kews. We walked along one of the excellent paths through the park before eventually reaching the playground and paddling pool which were filled with happy children enjoying the summer sunshine. The Wansbeck was now busy with rowing boats as we crossed back over the river and finished at our starting point 1 ½ hours later. Most of the group headed to nearby hostelries for refreshments and a welcome rest. The Health Walks last 1 ½ - 2 hours but a series of shorter walks (maximum 1 hour) has been introduced, mainly based around the river and park, for those who cannot manage the full walk or for those new to walking. All walks start at the Leisure Centre at 10.30 am. Further information about the walks can be obtained from organiser Vanessa Burgess on 07860 504763 [email protected]. PLAYTIME PLUS (St Aidan’s Church, Stobhill)Playtime Plus meets during school term times and is a group for the under 5s and their carers. Meetings start at 9.30 am and children enjoy a variety of activities. We begin with informal play in the children’s area at the back of the church where we also offer refreshments to the children and adults. After that we move to the front of the church, nearer the altar. The children are encouraged to sit on the carpet and take part in a very informal act of worship. This involves listening to a short story which is delivered using a variety of visual aids, depending on the theme, and is usually interactive due to the age of the children; then song time when one or two songs may be chosen by myself in connection with our theme but the children are also welcome to choose any particular song they wish (nursery rhymes etc.) that are familiar to them. We end the worship time with a short, sung prayer. We conclude with a simple craft which is also linked to our story and helps to reinforce the message it contains. We are a very informal group, with a mixture of people who come to Church and others who don’t and anyone interested in finding out more can contact Lesley, who runs the group, or just come along and give us a try.
