The 41 st Annual Norfolk Harborfest® will mark the celebration of the Norfolk Navy 100 homecoming event during the 3-day festival. DonnatheBuffaloisJebPuryear(vocals,electricguitar)andTaraNevins(vocals,guitar,fiddle,accordion,scrubboard)joinedbyDavidMcCracken(Hammondorgan,HonerClavinet&piano),KyleSpark(bass)andMarkRaudabaugh(drums).“It’sbeenreallyfunwiththislineup,”Puryearsays.“Yougettothepointwhereyou’replayingonareallyhighlevel,thingsareclickingandit’sliketurningonthekeytoareallygoodcar.Itjustgoes.”“Youhavetodojustwhatyouwanttodo,andeveryonelikesdifferentthings,”Nevinssays.“BothJebandIcomefromthisbackgroundofold-timefiddlemusic,whichisverynatural,veryreal,veryunder-produced,andallaboutcomingfromthegut—flyingbytheseatofyourpants.So,wehavethatinus,too.”

DonnatheBuffalodrewitsoriginalinspirationfromacherishedpartoftheAmericanheritage:theold-timemusicfestivalsofthesouththatdrewentiretownsandcountiestogether.Notonlywasitplayingmusicattheseevents,itwasthevibeandthetogethernessthatbondedthepeoplethatattended.DonnatheBuffaloplaysmusicthatoftenmoveslistenersphysicallyandspiritually.Inthewordsofalongtimefan,“Theirsongsarewellknowntocontainlyricsofferingpoetryandsagecommentaryontheattractionsandstruggleswithloveandpoliticsinthislife.Theirmagneticmusicalmixhasoftenbeendescribedasdancemusic,and,forsure,thereiseverythingfromfoot-tappingtoget-up-and-feel-ecstaticmovingintheirsound;butthereisalsosomedeeplysatisfyingsolaceinwhatDTBhastosayandhowtheysayit.”
