Youth Advisory Board Rusk County is looking for smart young men and women to serve on its youth board. This board serves the entire county and assists the 4-H agent with educational planning for local school districts and the county programs offered through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you know anyone who would make a great youth board member if you would please notify me by either phone or email I would really appreciate it.

Qualifications: · Does not have to be a 4-H member just a member of Rusk county

· Is 14 or older

· Wants to make a difference in their community

· Has a heart for serving others in their area

· Wants to see youth empowered/or wants to be an empowered youth

· Has the ability to make quarterly or biyearly meetings for the board

· Wants to serve

· Has ideas for new things in the community

County 4-H Round Up April 3, 2014, 6:00 p.m. Rusk County is hosting a 4-H county Round Up this year!! We will offer all of the same categories as the District 5 round up, please see the chart of Round up Events for you to choose from. We will

use the county level round up as a practice for the district level events. If you would like to present a presentation or participate in a contest at district please make plans to attend and participate in the county roundup.

I wanted to let you all know that Sunday's rifle practice is at 4:00 p.m. We will still practice for 1.5 hrs. Cherry Dessert Contest Winners

Three Ingredient Cherry Fudge Three Ingredient Cherry Fudge Prep Time: 15 minutes plus chilling Serves: 12 Ingredients: 1 (16oz) can cherry frosting 1 (12oz) bag white chocolate chips ½ cup dried cherries Prepare a 9x9 pan by spray lightly with cooking oil. Over a double boiler, or in the microwave, melt white chocolate chips. When chips are melted, remove from heat and stir in cherry frosting, evenly. Spread in prepared pan and place in refrigerator to set for 20 minutes. Cut into squares or hearts, with a cookie cutter, and serve. They will give away 5 $2,000 scholarships based on academic achievement, leadership, participation in extracurricular activities, nomination letter and statement of goals and aspirations. Rusk County Youth Project Show Attention all parents and

4-H members The Rusk County 4-H clubs are responsible for keeping the areas around the cattle exhibits in the back of the Expo clean at all times. We are also responsible for helping out the FFA Chapters in setting up and taking down the arena. We have a strong group of members and

parents and want to do our share in keeping the facility clean during the show. Everyone’s help is needed so that no one group has to do all the work. The following assignments have been made:

Carlisle Hog Pens (set up and keep area clean) Henderson Clean up- the exhibition ring area during the show Set up lamb pens and other set-up under barn 4-H Help with set up and take down of ring. Keep Clean- Cattle area for duration show Laneville Set up- chicken pens Keep rabbit area clean Leverett’s Chapel Hog pens and other set up Clean up- keep area clean and trash dumped Mt Enterprise Set up Rabbit Pens Keep clean shop exhibition area Overton Set up Hog pens Clean up trash near Chicken area Tatum Set up Cattle area and panels Clean up trash Lamb/ goat area West Rusk Set Up Arena Help dump all trash cans All FFA and 4H will help to keep the expo clean! Grounds supervisor will need help dumping trash cans throughout the week so be sure to advise your members to lend a hand to help. All designated areas will be checked by Grounds several times daily. Please make sure your area is clean so that there are no complaints about the trash situation this year. Let’s work hard to make it the best show ever!

4-H Horse News Horse Practice: March 9th, 2:00 p.m. at Kilgore Saddle Club Horse validation March 1-April 15 on 4-H Connect

Rusk County will be hosting a county level horse show in conjunction with the East Texas Horse Show Association at the Kilgore Saddle Club. If you are interested in the horse program please contact the extension office for more information. The Horse show is scheduled for April 19, 2014 and will start at 8 AM. Keep on the lookout in future newsletters for more information and a class list. We will pay minimal fees this year for the horse show so come out and take advantage of the lower fees and have a great time showing horses. Horse Judging Team: If you are interested in learning more about horse judging then please give me a call or shoot me an email at the extension office. Horse judging is similar to livestock judging but with horses. It is a great way to learn more about your horse and what we look for in show horses or even just performance horses. Choreographed Routines 1 to 9 people No speaking to form a skit or story line. The act requires choreography and can be demonstrated through twirling, pom pom squad routines, jump rope teams, basketball dribbling exhibitions, or dance (jazz, tap, country & western, ballroom, etc.). Sign language presentations to music have been added to choreographed routines.

Four (4) minutes for set-up and break down; maximum of six (6) minutes for presentation for a total of ten (10) minutes per act.

Musical / Instrumental 1 to 9 people Musical presentation may be musical instruments accompanied by background tape or an instrumental performance only. Four (4) minutes for set-up and break down; maximum of six (6) minutes for presentation for a total of ten (10) minutes per act.

Poetry / Prose 1 to 9 people Acts which showcase poetry or prose are required. The act may NOT incorporate vocal, musical, and/or choreographed routine. This category does not require 4-H related material, however, if an original poem or prose piece showcasing 4-H is written, this would be acceptable. Every 4-H member entered in the category must be a part of the performance on stage. All material must be memorized. Four (4) minutes for set-up and break down; maximum of six (6) minutes for presentation for a total of ten (10) minutes per act.

Solo / Band Performance 1 to 9 people All 4-H members entered in the category must be a part of the act by playing a musical instrument, singing, or both (solo performance must play an instrument and sing). Participants MUST incorporate singing in the acts, but cannot incorporate skits, poetry, or prose. They may, however, move around the stage and incorporate choreography with their presentation for the purpose of enhancing their showmanship. Four (4) minutes for set-up and break down; maximum of six (6) minutes for presentation for a total of ten (10) minutes per act.

State Level Activity 2014 Texas State 4-H Photography

Contest Rules and Guidelines Some of the changes are: • Theme Category is HOLIDAYS IN TEXAS. This theme

allows 4-H members to take photos of any holiday from January 1, 2012 to time of entry. The holiday season in Texas theme should have photographs that depict a Texas theme/flare or western heritage. Photographs can include nature, landscape, people, animals (domestic and/or wildlife) as long as the subject of the photograph is related to a holiday with a Texas/western basis.

• Formatting of photos has been simplified. • In 2013 all photos must be able to be printed at a 300 dpi

at a 3 X 5 inch size. Max memory size of 1.5MB • Both entry form and uploading of photos will all be done

on 4-H CONNECT between April 1-15. Time period for entry will be from April 1 to 15, 2014. For a copy of the rules and guidelines, please contact the Rusk County Extension Office.

State Events and Information The Texas 4-H Foundation is pleased to announce that they will host the “I Support the Clover” silent auction during the 2014 Texas 4-H Roundup. There will be an opportunity to earn money for your local 4-H program by submitting an item(s) on behalf of your county. The auction will open May 1, 2014 for online bidding. In order to be eligible, the county program needs to submit a silent auction form with description and photo of the auction item by Monday, March 31st. I thing this would be a great way to raise money for our 4-H program, that helps send many of you to camps, district and state level competitions and helps pay for many of our county level activities. The Top 10 items donated by county 4-H programs will receiving the highest bidding amounts, as compared to other county donated items, will be awarded as follows: …of the items selling price First Place 100% Second Place 75% Third through Six Place 50% Sixth through Tenth Place 25%
