W e have all seen them. Whether in the news or on YouTube, we see the video of a man in uniform, returning home from combat. It is clear that the family member is unaware of what is about to happen. A son, daughter, wife, girlfriend, or

parents—the response is the same. Confusion, astonishment, elation, relief and, almost always, tears. When a deployed service member returns home from combat, there is unmistakable joy.

Within our military community, we have experienced these emotions when our service member returns home with their unit. We gather with other families at Goettge Fieldhouse to greet the ones we love after so much time apart. Music fills the air, kids run and play, friends laugh and share stories. Homecoming is a celebration of life and love within the family.

For some, homecoming is not a celebratory moment. Instead, service members are reunited with their loved ones in a hospital room. The homecoming is unexpected and unplanned–a knock on the door or an unwanted phone call jars them into a new reality. No one wants to see a YouTube video of that.

In 2006, I was part of a group of Marine wives that held the very first Run For The Warriors® at Camp Lejeune. We chose Armed Forces Day to hold the race and our goal was to honor the wounded service members stationed aboard Camp Lejeune. The race would be their Homecoming—held on the very field that their Homecoming should have taken place.

It was a dreary day. The skies opened and unleashed heavy rains and cold, horrible winds. Yet the thousands that attended did not care. They clapped, cheered, cried, and celebrated their wounded heroes that morning. They celebrated Homecoming in the same manner that thousands of families have celebrated before, the way you see in those videos.

This year will be the 9th Annual Run For The Warriors®. The race has since moved to a location off base, allowing the addition of a half marathon. We have also held the race in cities around the country and continue to grow this series—San Diego, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York, New Jersey, Texas and more. Each Run For The Warriors® is held for the exact same purpose—to connect military families to a community that cares, to honor their services and sacrifices, to celebrate that they have come home and to honor those that have not come home.

We hope that you will join us on May 17 at Jacksonville High School for this year’s Run For The Warriors®. The event will begin the same as always. We will connect, we will honor, and above all, we will celebrate.

Each year, thousands of service members transition out of the military to

pursue a new civilian career or education. For those wounded, the transition to a new career can present even more challenges. Long held career goals might suddenly seem impossible due to an injury. Psychologically, the service member might feel ill-prepared to leave the military. Families have the added stress of a new budget or financial future.

In 2009, Hope For The Warriors® began the Above & Beyond Program in New York City. Since that time, the program has expanded and spread. Seminars are held throughout the country, often in connection with the Wounded Warrior Battalion.

The Above & Beyond Program provides guidance to wounded service members pursuing reintegration into the civilian sector. This Program is also extended to family members of wounded service members. The objective is to explore “next step” options for those interested in a civilian or military career, higher education/advanced training, or a small business startup.

The Program consists of one-on-one mentoring, 3-4 day seminars, and follow-up coaching, all specifically designed around participants’ individual objectives. Regardless of the participant’s experience level or skill set, this Program will assist in targeting personal and professional short-and long-term goals, outlining a

T he “Artie” Awards within Onslow County is a way for the county to recognize excellence in the field of events and to encourage growth of

events and festivals within the area. Each year, the Tourism Advisory Committee invites members of the community to submit their nominations in 19 differ-ent categories ranging from Best Event to Best T-shirt and everything in between.

Hope For The Warriors® was proud to nominate Sergeant Major Joe Houle, USMC, for a 2013 “Artie” Award as Volunteer of the Year. As a nonprofit orga-nization, they rely heavily on their volunteer base to get work accomplished and Houle has been a solid supporter of the organization for several years and the entire Onslow County community. In January, Hope For The Warriors® received the exciting news: their nominee had been submitted at the state level and had been chosen as the Volunteer of the Year for North Carolina!

As you run the streets of Jacksonville for this year’s Run For The Warriors®, it is important for each of you to understand the work involved in

making that single race happen. And even more impor-tantly, how different the race might be without Houle’s hard work.

Houlehas been instrumental to the Run For The War-riors® since its inception eight years ago and sits on the Run For The Warriors® planning committee.Typically, volunteers and staff set up for the Run For The Warriors® the night before in order to ensure a smooth start and registration on the morning of the race.Last year, a high school soccer game was scheduled at Jacksonville High School, the Run site, and set up was unable to take place until Run morning. Houle executed everything seamless-ly. Armed with an entirely new set up plan and a work-ing group of Marines that he recruited himself, Houle was able to organize and set up everything in time for the Run registration and start.

Houle has been part of the Hope For The Warriors® family for many years and their appreciation for what he has done for the organization and for military families cannot be overstated. The Run For The Warriors® has al-ways been the largest volunteer project Houle has worked on for the organization, but he can always be relied on to help throughout the year at big or small events. Aside from the Run For The Warriors®, Joe has volunteered for events such as the Thriller On The Griller series and the Scarlet & Gold Golf Invitational where he donates his own time, money, and sometimes his antique military vehicles! He is continually available to Hope For The Warriors®and brings with him a passion for serving others that is clear in all that he does.

Hope For The Warriors® is not the only organization that depends on this man’s hard work. Today, he is the Director of Operations for the Museum of the Marines. But beyond his position there, Houle volunteers with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, USO, and many more organizations. His selflessness and dedication made him an easy choice as Volunteer of the Year.

Thank you to Sergeant Major Houle for your dedication to Hope For The Warriors®, military families, and to so many in the community!

At East Carolina University, we know that service to our country comes in many forms. From the servicemen and servicewomen deployed all over the world to the spouses and children living on the homefront, families are engaged with the challenges of being a part of the U.S. military.

ECU’s online degree programs can help members of those families—deployed service members, their spouses, and college-age children—meet their educational goals through online education. With ECU Online, we have the people, the programs, and the policies to offer your family an education from a respected university—around the world and right here at home.

Run For The Warriors® is a unique race dedicated to the men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, their families, and families of the fallen. It is a celebration of their strength and resolve and a promise to continue restoring self, family, and hope. The Run For The Warriors® race series provides wounded service members encouragement and the opportunity to pursue the sport of running, walking, or cycling to assist in their physical and emotional rehabilitation.

Run For The Warriors® unites military and civilian community members, connecting and educating each on the importance of embracing their neighbors. The goal of each event is to establish a long term understanding and respect for the needs of local military families.

Each year, the number of races throughout the country has increased as has the number of participants. Distances vary but often include 10K, 5K, and 1-Mile Walk/Runs. Race is chip timed.

On May 18, the community of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville, N.C., along with people from every corner of the country came

together at Jacksonville High School to support Hope for the Warriors’ annual Run for the Warriors. The support for wounded service members was evident in the immense crowd of people, humbled by the sacrifices of service members.

The Hope for the Warriors organization strives to enhance the quality of life for post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty. They dedicate their energy to restoring a sense of self, the family unit, and hope for service members and military families.

The annual Run for the Warriors raises awareness and funds for the organization, and its participants include people from all walks of life. Service members participated in the run, wounded warriors and disabled citizens competed in the hand cycling event, military wives and children joined in the race, and the event included many with no military affiliation at all.

The mission of Hope for the Warriors reaches far beyond the military community, touching the hearts of many and moving people to become involved.

A Marine beating the odds. The doctors said he may

never walk again.May 18 marked a monumental moment in his defeat of

a doctor’s diagnosis as he crossed the finish line of the half marathon in the annual Run for the Warriors.

In 2006, Staff Sgt. Ryan Anderson returned home from Afghanistan to face the damage done during his deployment. Anderson suffered through sequential explosions while in Afghanistan, resulting in Traumatic Brain Injury.

“I was blown up a total of seven times. I had to relearn how to talk and relearn how to walk,” said Anderson.

The man who left for Afghanistan just a few months before, returned home with unimaginable challenges while facing the stigma attached to TBIs. Anderson struggled not only with losing the use of his legs, but also with memory and speech problems. At a time when discouragement and grief may cripple others, he approached the challenge with full force.

“After hearing I may never walk again, I was driven to prove I could beat the doctor’s diagnosis. I’m hard headed, so it gave me more drive to return to the best I could be,” said Anderson.

Although his strength continued to build, for four years Anderson remained unable to use his legs until pushed by Hope for the Warriors to try something new.

Giving up never crossed his mind and in 2010 he began to rehabilitate his body through hand cycling, a sport which uses solely upper body strength. During rehabilitation, he regained the use of his legs resulting in an increasing sense of hope.

As Anderson talked about his recovery, he proudly discussed his part in Saturday’s Run for the Warriors,

“When I regained use of my legs, I began cycling on two wheels using my lower body strength again and on Saturday I will be running the half marathon in the annual Run for the Warriors.”

Anderson admitted the members of Hope for the Warriors fueled his motivation for recovery, and without their support he may not have regained all his strength.

Hope for the Warriors supports wounded service members, but their mission’s far reach moves others to get involved.

A parapalegic driven to serve wounded warriorsHope for the Warriors member Paul Kelly became

particularly close to Anderson over the years, and mentored him throughout his recovery. Anderson explained their relationship as deeper than friends – they’re family. He spoke of the first time meeting Kelly and feeling as if they’d known each other for years.

“This is a guy with plenty of motivation and drive. When he has a goal in mind, such as fully recovering, you don’t want to be in the way or he will run over you like a bulldozer. That’s what I admire about him,” said Kelly.

Kelly’s story differs greatly from Anderson’s military related injury. He was not a member of any service branch and did not serve in any war, but humbly appreciates the sacrifices of service members – so much so he now devotes his time to their recovery.

“Most service members who return from war injured

possess the motivation and drive to recover, and all they need is a means to do so,” said Anderson.

Kelly suffered a spinal cord injury in 1978 and lived without the use of his legs for the past 35 years. He reflects on those years with wisdom of obstacles and challenges a disability present and knows his experiences help wounded warriors in their healing and recovery process. His involvement in Hope for the Warriors spurred from hand cycling in the Marine Corps Marathon and realizing the value of his knowledge and experience to injured service members.

Kelly said the great thing about Hope for the Warriors is their ability to connect wounded warriors with people who have suffered debilitating injuries. He explained in dealing with an injury, service members face adjusting to a different way of life, and Hope for the Warriors bridges the gap with disabled mentors who know the shortcuts to the new way of life.

Kelly hand cycled in the Run for the Warriors May 18, and the annual event remains close to his heart after many years of participation. He believes in the importance of awareness and involvement, and wants injured warriors

to return home to a community grateful for their sacrifices.

A military wife invested in awareness.Stephanie Malone described Run for

the Warriors as a full-out, annual event for her family which started in 2007.

Malone stressed the importance of raising awareness for service members who put their life on the line for this country and believes Run for the Warriors stands out as an event which draws in the community, making it impossible to ignore the needs of wounded warriors.

“Camp Lejeune is such an integral part of this community. The service members may come and go, but many of the wounded stay here for the immense support of organizations like Hope for the Warriors and I think it’s important for the community they come home to, to be just as involved with supporting them as each of those organizations,” said Malone.

Malone works as a nurse in Jacksonville and her husband served in the Marine Corps before joining the Air Force as a reservist, and now works as a firefighter and paramedic aboard Camp Lejeune. Both careers allow her and her husband personal contact with injured service members, so Malone’s connection to wounded warriors runs deep.

P ine Knoll Shores is a picturesque small town on nearby Emerald Isle, approximately 30 miles from the main gate at Marine Corps

Base Camp Lejeune. The town is surrounded by water—the north shore hits Bogue Sound and waves from Onslow Bay, and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean, hit the sands from the south. The widest section is less than a mile across but the town still has plenty of beautiful sights, homes and an extensive aquarium.

Pine Knolls Shores is also filled with residents dedicated to serving and honoring members of the military. Since 2008, the town has hosted the annual Kayak for the Warriors event to invite warriors for a day on the beach and to enjoy the water. Hundreds take to the water for a day of fun for the entire family. A 3.2-mile kayak and paddle board race through the Pine Knoll Shores canals begins Saturday, June 7, 2014, at 10 a.m. A $45 registration fee includes a Warrior T-shirt and lunch.

Not sure if you can be the fastest kayaker but still want to compete and win? Then the WARRIORS RACE is your chance to shine. Raise donations for your race and for each dollar raised, a second will be subtracted from your raw race time. So the WARRIOR winner will be the racer with the fastest WARRIOR time: Raw Time – Dollars Raised=WARRIOR TIME. Anyone can win this race!

Not looking to race but still want to join in the fun? A Family Fun Race starts at 10:30 a.m. for $15 registration fee and includes lunch. Participants can use any paddle-worthy vessel in order to compete in the race. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Any fun race participant may purchase T-shirts at the special price of $15. Fun racers who raise $50 or more in sponsors will be given a free T-shirt.

This year, a tour of homes in Pine Knoll Shores and a reception at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium will take place on Thursday, June 5. The reception

invites local service members, veterans and wounded warriors from Camp Lejeune. Local businesses donate items for the silent and live auctions as well.

The annual Kayak for the Warriors has continued to grow in success each year, thanks to so many hard working and dedicated volunteers in Pine Knoll Shores. Last year alone, the town donated $70,000 to Hope For The Warriors®. But in 2013, the town did not stop there. As the holidays approached, people in the town adopted 24 military families to support through the Hope For The Warriors® Holiday Initiative. Each military family in need were given Christmas gifts for their children, helping to make each of their holidays brighter and warmer.

“The community of Pine Knoll Shores has embraced our service members, veterans and military families,” Robin Kelleher, Hope For The Warriors® President said. “We are so proud that they have chosen to work with Hope For The Warriors® and our families.”

“The people I wanted to help were the ones that have sacrificed so much for this country. Patriotism has an entirely new definition to me now because I did not grow up with a military background, and neither did my husband. Yet these brave men and women put so much on the line to do the jobs they signed up for and they should never have to suffer in silence. Working with the military feels like a true calling and I could not be prouder to have the opportunity to serve the men and women who have endured so much.”-MSW Intern with Hope For The Warriors®

T he military has its own culture. Among those that serve, and those that serve alongside them, there

is a unique experience. The culture, the language, the understanding of what it means to serve—it is a different world.

Today’s military culture even differs from 15 years ago. After ten years of combat deployments, the needs of both service members and families have changed. In order to fully support the military family, we must understand the full impact of multiple moves, back-to-back combat deployments, injuries, loss of neighbors and friends, and

more. How can people help those in the military if they don’t understand the distinct military culture?

It is precisely that question that led to Hope For The Warriors® Masters of Social Work (MSW) Internship Program. Thousands of social work students are enrolled in programs across the country, many who would like to focus on the military population when they graduate. How can each of these students learn how to serve the military population?

The MSW Internship through Hope For The Warriors® provides students the opportunity to gain the required clinical hours while focusing on the military population. MSW students are required to complete field work or on the job training. Specific program requirements vary from state to state, most students are required to complete between 1,000 and 1,500 hours of field work and supervision in order to graduate and become a licensed social worker. Within Hope For The Warriors®, interns are supervised by three different staff members – a field supervisor (a licensed social worker), a preceptor or

2. Architecture plans were created and then eventually do-nated to the Marine Corps. It was then agreed that Hope For The Warriors® would have a monument erected instead.

3. The sculptor commissioned to create the monument is artist John Phelps, father of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Chance was killed in action on April 9, 2004 in Ramadi, Al Anbar, Iraq.

4. The HBO movie, Taking Chance, is the story of Lt. Colo-nel Michael Strobl, USMC,bringing Chance home to his fam-ily.

5. The dedication in 2013 was attended by John Phelps, Chris Marquez, and Dane Shaffer and their families.

6. John’s greatest challenge in creating the monument was determining what each Marine carried on his back since the photo only showed a view from the front. He researched these details extensively. During the dedication, both Mar-quez and Shaffer confirmed that those details were accu-rate.

7. Now Sergeant Major Kasal is still serving in the Marine Corps. He was awarded the Navy Cross for heroic actions performed during the firefight.

Since the dedication, countless photos have been taken in front of the monument. Each week, Marines, their families, and visitors stand in front of the monument to commemorate significant moments—reenlistments, retirements, family vis-its, and more.

be: identifying strengths and skills; translating skills into “civilian speak”; practicing networking techniques; preparing for interviews; writing resumes; participating in “shadow a professional” days; understanding corporate etiquette and e-mail protocol; providing new “dress for success” attire; creating a personalized basic budget plan. Additional instructional segments will be added for those pursuing further education and/or small business startups. In addition to the seminars, the Above & Beyond Director will work one-on-one with service members to develop their job skills. Although this is not a job placement program, service members are connected to potential opportunities too.

The Above & Beyond Program is part of our more extensive Employment & Education Programs. Through this pillar of programs, service members are introduced to programs such as Leadership Under Fire and the Paddy Brown Program. These programs help service members transition to careers in fire safety. Visit leadershipunderfire.com to learn more.

task supervisor and a staff trainer. Together, these three staff members ensure that each intern not only completes the required clinical hours but also gains a complete understanding of our military culture.

Many of the interns have a personal connection to the military as a veteran or as the spouse or child of a service member. In those cases, the internship builds on their personal knowledge and expands their experience to better serve families regardless of branch, geographic location, economic background, or other cultural variables. Although we have a military culture, each family is also unique in their experiences and professionals need to understand and respect those differences.

The students are not the only ones that benefit from this program. Hope For the Warriors® has utilized the MSW Internship Program to positively increase services provided. Interns have supported the expansion of: Case and Crisis Management, Clinical Intervention and Support, Organization Development, and Grant Research and Writing. Currently, Hope For The Warriors® is working with ten interns across the country providing 800+ hours of service each month. Through the internships, Hope For The Warriors® has expanded its reach and depth of services to

and a combat veteran shares:“During my time as an intern, I have been able to help Veterans

in a different capacity than being in uniform. It is beneficial to be multidimensional and allows me to help more people than I ever thought I would. I take it personal when a Veteran approaches me asking for help. I have the same mindset as I did in the military when working for Hope For The Warriors®. My time at Hope For The Warriors® has been very beneficial and has allowed me to learn more about the issues Veterans face and how to better serve them.”

Hope For The Warriors® began the internship program with a partnership with the University of Southern California. Their online program, MSW@USC, boasted the first social work program to offer a military social work specialization. The partnership began in late 2012 and was the first partnership that matched a top-ranked social work program with a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that specialized in the needs of active duty members and veterans. Since that beginning, Hope For The Warriors® interns have included students from Fordham University, Columbia University, Touro University, Eastern Carolina University, and Southern Illinois State University. Geographically, interns are working in offices across the country.
