A Bout Time: WKHX/Atlanta’s Scott Gaines (l) and Pearl’s Chris Waters (r, who won) leave it all in the ring at the 15th Annual Ringside: A Fight For Kids gala Friday (3/1).

Rumble Delivers The Hits The 15th Annual Ringside: A Fight For Kids gala was held Friday (3/1), and as Saturday Night Live’s Stefon would say, “This place has everything!” Box-ing matches, formal wear, seated dinners, a DJ spin-ning ‘80s hits, a giant disco ball, silent auction items, an open bar, a cigar lounge, Ja-son Aldean without a hat, the guitarist from Matchbox 20 and kids dressed as Michael Jackson were all gathered in one room to raise money for The Charley Foundation,

which supports charitable organizations addressing the critical needs of children. The evening’s main attraction – music biz boxing (seriously. it’s a thing.) – found Pearl’s Chris Waters defeating WKHX/Atlan-ta’s Scott Gaines, Sony/Nashville’s Adam Davis knocking out MGC Sports founder Alan Bullington, artist Andy Velo reigning supreme over Riser House/Song Factory’s Brandon Perdue and Phivestarr Productions’ Jenny Sciullo beating Loeb & Loeb’s Farrah Usmani. The real winners, however, were the children. Warner Chappell VP/A&R and Ring Announcer Ryan Beuschel noted that the matchup between Usmani and Sciullo raised the most money in the history of the event, with Sciullo herself holding the record for highest total of donations for The Charley Foundation. Final numbers are not yet in, but The Char-ley Foundation founder Carolyn Miller tells Coun-try Aircheck that preliminary numbers show a net of more than $100,000. “Add-

ing this year, we will have given over a million dollars to children’s charities,” notes Miller. “I can’t believe we are hitting that mile-stone.” Anyone interested in participating in future Rumble on the Row events may contact Miller here. –Monta Vaden

Dan + Shay Hit A Triple Hot on the heels of a Grammy win for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, Warner Bros./WAR’s Dan + Shay launched The Tour Feb. 28 in New Orleans. “These are just two guys coming to hang out with their fans for a couple hours,” says WNOE/New Orleans PD Ashley Wilson, who attended the opening night. As the duo’s career continues to accelerate, so too does the rabidity of their fan base, all of whom were singing along throughout the entirety of the evening, according to Wilson. The show is divided into three acts, each with its own unique feel, Wilson tells Country Aircheck. “The first act was high energy,” says Wilson. “Between the first two acts, the band left the stage and a video played showing where it all began – from signing their record deal, to radio tour, to their first big hits, to now – including picking up their Grammy a couple weeks ago.” When the duo returns for the second act, a set change transforms the stage into a living room. “The guys were seated on a couch surrounded by lamps with a tapestry background on the video board,” explains Wilson. “Even though there were about 3,000 people in the room, it felt like they were having a one-on-one conversation with you.” The final act is the encore, where Dan + Shay roll out “Speechless, “19 You + Me” and “Tequila.” “If I’m not mistaken, they played every single song from the lat-est album,” notes Wilson. “Observing the crowd, all of them have potential to be radio hits, because many of the fans knew every single word. There were lots of girls, but it wasn’t just a girls’ night out. There were couples slow dancing all over the room, and there were many families. I spoke to a mom who brought her 17-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter. While they made their way up to the front to take it all in, mom hung toward the back, but she was also singing to every song.” Opener Morgan Evans was the perfect complement, says Wilson. “While Dan + Shay’s video board made the show a spectacular production, it still remained intimate, and Morgan introduced this element,” she explains. “Fans are getting to know Morgan, but after he involved them in almost every song,

Big Loud’s Hardy discusses his most influential music:1. Aerosmith: It was the first concert I went to — the Nine Lives Tour in Birmingham. It was dope. It was super dope. Seeing Steven Tyler on stage being a boss made me think being a rock star was really cool. 2. Lynyrd Skynyrd: My dad had me on all rock ‘n’ roll, and that was the first band I really

took a big liking to. I swear, “Free Bird” is the first song I can ever remember hearing. That’s where a lot of my southern rock influences come from musically, lyrically and melodically.3. Kid Rock: He is a huge influence. With albums like Devil With-out A Cause, I dig any music that is completely fresh and something that no one has ever done before. I think Devil Without A Cause followed that trend, so I respect that a lot and I look up to his “don’t give a shit attitude” and bad assness. If there’s any way that I can follow in that same category, I will. 4. Eminem: I listened to him a lot growing up. His phrasing and the way that he rhymes words — I think he kind of subcon-sciously taught me how to do that. When I’m writing, something that I kind of pride myself on is phrasing and being able to rhyme really weird words and fit words where you don’t think that they’d be able to fit and making it work.5. Chris Cornell/Soundgarden: I wanted to learn to sing like him [Cornell], so that’s how I started developing my kind of raspy tone…listening to him, Soundgarden and Audioslave.Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Greta Van Fleet. I know it’s highly-regarded, but I haven’t heard it. I refuse to listen to it, because I don’t think that it’s creative. I think it’s copying somebody.“Important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: That is so hard. EDM, house music and songs with drops, because to me, and this probably just comes from ignorance — and I’m okay with that — but to me, they literally all sound exactly the same. An album you listened to incessantly: When I was in college, I listened to the Alt-J record that came out in 2010 or 2011 incessantly. If I pick a classic, Animals by Pink Floyd. If I have more than a four or five hour drive somewhere, I’ll pretty much listen to that every single time.An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Cold War” by Cautious Clay. That song is dope. I freaking love that song. He’s an awesome artist. He hasn’t blown up yet, but he’s going to.

And there’s Science to back it up. An April 2018 study pub-lished in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease reports that “objective evidence from brain imaging shows personally meaningful music is an alternative route for communicating with patients who have Alzheimer’s disease.” Similarly, a 2017

study by Brown University found discontinuation of antipsychotic medications increased in Music & Memory facilities (23.5% to 24.4%) and those facilities demonstrated increased rates of reduction in behavioral problems (50.9% to 56.5%). (Read the full studies here) Music & Memory’s ongoing research has shown participants

are more social – which is vitally important with isolating diseases – calmer, more cooperative and happier overall. “The more a song is associated with a life experience or heartfelt moment, the more impact it might have later in life,” Cohen says. “Playlists are like fingerprints; no two are identical. Certainly, country music is popular. Overall, many of the Billboard Top 100 songs are most common.” (See Kenny Chesney’s PSA here) So far, Music & Memory has brought personalized therapeutic

music to thousands of care organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. (See the list here) That includes training and educating elder care professionals, nursing home staff and family caregiv-ers to build an iTunes library, create personalized playlists and to acquire and manage music players. “Despite the enormous sums of money spent on mood and behavior altering medications that are often not particularly effec-tive, nothing compares to these iPods when it comes to improving quality of life,” remarks Cobble Hill (Brooklyn) Health Center President/CEO Tony Lewis. For millions of families watching a loved one struggle with physical and cognitive difficulties caused by Alzheimer’s and de-mentia, Music & Memory offers a better quality of life with mean-ing and connection. Most importantly, it offers hope. And, for a lot of us, music not only provides a living, but could also one day keep us connected to life.
