Nathan Pearce rushed home to Bathurst after refereeing the game between Eastwood and Southern Districts to play for the Central West Old Bulls in a game of Golden Oldies against the Penrith Legless Emus the next day. Happily with no ill effects as Nathan’s budding rugby career had been snuffed out by three broken legs, two of them in one match for the Bathurst Bulldogs. Footnote: Nathan’s decision to red card Aisea Namoa for a tip tackle early in the game at Millner Field resulted in the Eastwood player being suspended for six matches.

Yes, that was Michael Clarke watching the NSW State of Origin players go through their paces at a training. The chap at his side was Pat Howard, the old Wallaby midfield back whose current job is general manager of team performance of Australia’s cricketers."I wanted to see how it was structured,” said Howard. We can learn from other sports.”

Is there anything George Gregan can’t do? Captain of Australia 59 times in his world record 139 Test appearances, batted No 3 for the ACT in cricket, successful businessman and now we discover his golf handicap is as low as six. George will lead the Classic Wallabies against the Classic All Blacks in a big golf day at Oatlands on August 17 which will be a highlight of the Bledisloe Cup Festival. Greg Cornelsen, Tim Horan, Buck Shelford, Andy Haden and Grant Fox will be among the starters. Sixty spots in the field are open to sponsors, corporates and the general public. Here’s a tip. If you’re looking for a fun day, hook up with the old All Black captain Stu Wilson.

What do rugby general managers do in the off season? Bob Frost, of Eastwood, will pull on his budgie smugglers and try to complete his goal of surfing at each beach in Sydney during the summer months. Starting at Palm Beach, he has been working his way south and so far his favourite is Bilgola.

Myles Coolican, who fixes knees, has trekked the Kokoda Trail with sons James and Tom and now has headed back to New Guinea to do it with daughter Lizzie. His brother John, once a Wallaby prop, is on the trip, too.

Nick Cummins, the Randwick back now playing for the Western Force, was watching Animal Planet one night when the honey badger came into his life. “It’s only small but it eats cobras and isn’t frightened to attack a lion,” said the Australian Sevens player. “It inspired me. From that moment I wanted to be as a ferocious as a honey badger, particularly in defence.” Nick made the mistake of telling his team-mates and the nickname has stuck, getting an airing on national TV when he swept in for two tries for the Force against the Brumbies.

If Warringah coach Sam Harris has another run in fourth grade, it’s safe to assume he won’t be kicking for goal. He missed six out of six against Penrith in the last round.

Bob Burke isn’t just famous for being the dad of Matthew Burke, who capped a spectacular Wallaby career by scoring all of the 24 points in a famous victory over the All Blacks at the MCG. He is president of the Tim Tam club who passes round the biscuits to a chosen few at half-time in every Eastwood home game. No future Wallabies in Matt’s family yet but he has four daughters Harriet, 9, Edie, 7, Giselle, 2 and zsa zsa 1.

We note the name of Jake Turnbull playing Colts for Eastern Suburbs. Yes, his dad is legendary rugby man Ross. And yes, he’s a prop.

Along with New zealand, South Africa and uSA, the Australian girls are automatic qualifiers for next year’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow from June 28 to 30. In the men’s event, Australia will be one of 15 teams attempting to qualify.

Sunday footy? The Easts Beasties are attempting to switch their home game against Southern Districts set down for August 4 to the following day because it would figure in a direct clash with the Scots v Joeys clash up the road at Bellevue Hill.

unsatisfied in the Brisbane club competition and itching to advance his rugby career,

the 22-year old heeded the advice of brother – and now teammate – Dennis

and moved to Sydney in March.

rebels coach cam Blades said Swann stood out immediately. “it was pretty obvious from

the first couple of sessions that he had a bit of ability so we put him in first grade. he’s been pretty impressive ever since.”

at 102kg, Swann runs like a centre, steps like a winger and offloads like his hero,

Sonny Bill Williams. a combination made in rugby match-making heaven, he fits

perfectly with the rebels’ free-flowing style.

“in Brisbane i didn’t get the chance to run the ball, but here i’ve been able to unleash

a little bit more of what i have and spark something a bit different,” he says.

you can see the “spark” he talks about on a highlights video on youtube from his time at Sunnybank in Brisbane. On

current form another highlights package in a rebels jersey won’t be far off.

identifying his ball playing skills, defensive work and breakdown savvy as strengths,

Blades believes Swann’s dream of playing professional rugby will one day become a

reality. “he’s got some of those abilities you really can’t coach,” says Blades. “he invariably breaks the first tackle, he’s got great vision and

he uses his footwork to get into space. Some people just have that ability and some don’t.”

Swann attributes these skills to growing up with six brothers.

“We were always out playing touch footy, off loading, stepping and trying to show off,”

he laughs. “as you grow up, you learn more skills but i’ve always been able to hold onto those ones – and people don’t expect them from a forward like me, so it’s really good.”

away from the field, Swann juggles his time between completing a personal

training course, hanging out with friends and family in Brisbane and Sydney and

whiling away the hours on his PS3.

Call it what it really is

Sydney Premier Rugby

With more than 65% of Test and Super Rugby players in Australia coming from Sydney Premier Rugby competition clubs, this really is the Premier Rugby competition.

And what better way to enjoy Premier Rugby than at the grounds, supporting your local team.

SYDNEY RUGBY UNION.

Page 7: Rugby News Issue 12, 2012

This marks a week of major change. The new draw begins today in Premier Club Rugby, with the top six teams based on club championship points now playing each other until the finals, as do the lower six teams. And my form guide’s showing that Eastwood are again favourites to carry off the Shute Shield with Sydney university the most likely to push them aside on 15 September. It’s also the 21st and last week of Super Rugby before the finals and we can only hope the Waratahs head for the exit to the sounds of screaming and cheering after comprehensively cleaning up the Reds tonight in Brisbane. It’s impossible to keep up with what’s happening next season with player movements and coaching placements, but we do have the body of team personnel who can resurrect the Waratahs and they’ll need our full support. With all this top-end rugby around us and the Rugby Championship featuring the Wallabies, New zealand, South Africa and Argentina not far away, this column would like to pose a controversial question to you all.Should the value of penalty and drop goals be changed? Before getting into that, Matt Burke had much to say in his newspaper column about the time taken for kicks at goal and the time this wastes. He even suggested the clock should be stopped for conversions and penalties.Get rid of this time-wasting, he demanded, because the actual time of play in any game is only 33 to 35 minutes and not the hour or so you’d have expected. Then he went on to make mention of the three points for penalty and drop goals and I wholeheartedly concur that a big concern in rugby is why should a team that scores tries be beaten by a side kicking only penalty goals and drop goals. To think you can work and work for a try for five points and then be outscored by an opponent which pots, say, a penalty and drop goal simply doesn’t add up.

The over-value of penalty and drop goals brings into context the excessive influence players like Dan Carter, Andrew Mehrtens (Nz), Jonny Wilkinson (England), Francois Steyn (South Africa) and Ronan O’Gara (Ireland) can have, not only on any single match, but on an entire international series.Wilkinson is not a name this author remembers too fondly (even though we share birth dates…just a few years apart). But I’m not alone in this regard. Many have suffered because of his successful use of the boot, for at last count the English sharp-shooter had amassed a mind-boggling 1172 points against international opposition and that included just two tries! Most concern seems to revolve around the three points for drop goals. That’s simply too many and maybe the value should be reduced to two points or even follow rugby league and award just one point. How many times have we seen a team work its way toward the opposing goal-line just before half or full-time with the obvious intent of calling their drop-kicker into action? At the highest level, a number of quarter-finals and semi-finals in the Rugby World Cup have been decided by the three points from drop goals and so too have two finals.South Africa’s victory margin in 1995 came from a Joel Stransky drop goal in extra time and Wilkinson duplicated the feat for England against Australia in the 2003 final.Normally left-footed, you might remember he landed the winning goal with his right foot. What three points for penalty and drop goals means is that any sensible coach initially sits down with pen and paper, writes down the team’s best goal-kicker, and then slots in 14 other players around him.To have someone like Matt Burke–who potted 174 penalty goals, 104 conversions and one field goal himself in his 81 Test appearances for the Wallabies – suggesting the value of penalty and drop goals be reduced really adds substance to the argument.Along with trialing the shorter scrum sequence of ‘crouch, touch, set’ from the start of next season in each hemisphere, the value of penalty and drop goals really needs looking at by the IRB.

a Week of change and More changes Should Be considered.

If rival coaches can be believed, Eastwood, currently leading the Shute Shield competition by five points after ten wins and a single loss, will be one of the two grand finalists on September 15. When we conducted a poll on whom they’d play if their club happened to be there on the big day, all but one plumped for Eastwood, with the other unable to decide between the Woodies and Sydney university. Eastwood coach John Manenti thinks the Woodies will play university.

However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Like thoroughbred horses thundering round the turn and heading for home, the Sydney clubs, now split into two groups, today play the first of five games to determine which of them will comprise the eight play-off clubs.

Eastwood (48 points), Sydney university (45), Southern Districts (45), Manly (42) and Eastern Suburbs (35) appear assured of a place by virtue of their table points, and they have the carrot of a second chance if they are in the top four. Norths (29), Parramatta (27), Warringah (23), West Harbour (17), Penrith (16), Gordon (14) and Randwick (11) are fighting for the remaining three spots.

Daniel Manu, of West Harbour, says: “Eastwood are winning away from home and they’re mentally tough,” while John Briggs, of Gordon, sums up: “Even when Eastwood don’t play so well, they still win.” Todd Louden, of Sydney university, who lost last year’s grand final to the Woodies 19-16: “We want to play Eastwood, there’s no hiding that. They bring out the best in you.”

EASTWOOD v MANLYRiding high on top of the table, Eastwood get a boost from the return of important forwards Gareth Palamo and Marty Plokstys for this game against Manly whom they eclipsed 27-0 in the slop at Manly Oval a couple of months ago. However, coach John Manenti is not fooled by this scoreline because he knows the Marlins are smoking to avenge it.

The Marlins are coming off a 29-0 disposal of Gordon but coach Tim Lane knows they’ll have to lift still further in this game at Millner Field as Eastwood have been at the top of their game.

Manly still have almost half a team on Super Rugby duty, but hooker James Hilterbrand, flanker Neil Meyer and winger Lui Siale are here to plug the holes.

Previous match: Eastwood 27-0 (at Manly)

SYDNEY UNIvERSITY v EASTERN SUBURBSA week ago Sydney university second-rower Ollie Atkins was hardly a household name in his own house. Then came a call on the Thursday morning from Western Force asking him to fly to Auckland that afternoon for a Super Rugby game against the Blues on Saturday. He made the trip, played creditably and today is back in Nz for the

Crusaders v Force game.

As Waratah Rugby has, for the moment, slapped a No Contract Players ban on uni, the less experienced players will have to show the way against Eastern Suburbs.

With their key lineout exponent Richard Stanford pulled out at 9.30 on the morning of the match by Waratahs officials, Easts lost eight first half lineouts on the way to a 12-6 loss to Norths last Saturday, but he’ll be back in action at university Oval. Other changes are James Burroughs at halfback, Elijah Niko at centre and Harry Bennett at fullback. It’ll be a tough battle up front.

Previous match: Sydney uni 38-15 (at Woollahra)

NORTHERN SUBURBS v SOUTHERN DISTRICTSWith Southern Districts having a share of second spot, Cameron Blades deservedly will back up for another season as coach in 2013. Today at

Forshaw Rugby Park, the Rebels face a determined Northern Suburbs, who are bidding for their fifth win in a row. Although without new Waratah halfback Grayson Hart, they get a boost from the return of Waratah backs Atieli Pakalani and Brackin Karauria-Henry.

Pakalani slots into the wing spot made vacant by Nicky Price’s departure to a French club, while Hart’s replacement Chris O’Reilly, who was in fourth grade little more than a month ago, played league in the junior ranks of the Cronulla Sharks before turning up in the off-season looking for a game.

Norths, whose play-off hopes have soared now superboot Dave Harvey is back for the season, are coming off a fiercely won 12-6 victory over Easts. They get a further lift from flanker Will Brame coming back and the release of centre Samu Wara by the Western Force. According to coach Scott Fava, the key for Norths will be to shut down Souths’ attacking panache.

Previous match: Souths 35-13 (at North Sydney)

Tip: Norths

WEST HARBOUR v WARRINGAHWests Harbour coach Daniel Manu thinks three wins in the remaining five games could be enough for the Pirates to win one of the play-off spots. However, it won’t be an easy assignment at Concord against Warringah’s enthusiastic young side which is fresh from a 47-10 drubbing of Penrith which hoisted the Rats into eighth spot. Coach Sam Harris has brought flanker Adrian Clements, No 8 Jack Tomkins and centre Josh Smith into the team.

Wests are coming off a 48-36 disposal of Randwick, but Adam Nixon, a military man from Brisbane who walked off the street three weeks ago looking for a game, and Reg De Jager are new faces in the front-row.

Previous match: Warringah 40-10 (at Rat Park)

Tip: Warringah

RANDWICK v GORDONTwo famous old clubs at the bottom of the table, but they’ll fight for every ball. History demands it. Randwick get a lift from the return of prop Lotu Taukeiaho from Wallaby duty. Gordon are the youngest team in the competition, fielding no less than 22 debutants in first grade during the season. Skipper Tobias Gukibau, flanker Mitch

Samu Wara has been cleared by Western Force to play for Norths.

PARRAMATTA v PENRITHParramatta coach Glen Christini thinks the Two Blues can make the play-offs if they can win two of the remaining five games to finish eighth. “Eighth would be a position of death, though” he said. With an eye to the play-offs, this is a must win game at Merrylands for Penrith, who flopped to a 47-10 loss to Warringah last start. Parramatta will play Daley Harper, a fullback from Wellington, New zealand at No.15.

cOltS REPORTby Hamish McCathie

The Colts competition resumes after having a bye last weekend. There are five rounds remaining and it is going to be a battle to see who finishes in the top 8. With the teams splitting into different pools results are going to be paramount. Sydney university must be congratulated as they have played 11 games and won each of those games with a four try bonus point. Let’s have a look at the top eight teams as they currently sit on the ladder.

SyDNey uNiVerSity:Jack Farrer and his staff have this team playing as well as they have for the past five years. The Students deserve their favourite tag to take out the 2012 colt’s competition. Players to watch are hooker Tim Reid, centre Chris Ingate and flyhalf Ed Wylie.

NOrtherN SuBurBS:Scott Fava’s recruitment drive is paying off for Norths as they are playing great Rugby. Norths have two top class centres in Michael Freeman and Jack Cameron. These two are backed up by the ever present and likable number 7 Jack Walters.

MaNly:The Marlins can be a very physical team that have the ability to play the game with width. When they are on song they can beat any team. The key to their forward dominance is number 6 Rhys Dombkins and number 8 Nick Bligh.

WeSt harBOur:The Pirates won 7 and lost 4 mixing their form after round 1. They are an interesting team who can thrash any team when they put it together. They are in the bottom half of the draw so they can keep building. They could beat their more fancied opponents above them come semi time. Loose head prop David Lolohea and number 8 Harrison Orr are having terrific seasons.

raNDWick:Randwick also plays in the bottom half of the competition for their last 5 rounds and hence could sneak into the top 4. The Wicks started slowly however they are definitely a threat to uni and Norths. They have a fast number 7 in Mark Baldwin and he is backed up by Ben Selby and Tom “the traveller” Nicholson.

eaStWOOD:The Woodies are not travelling as well as last year although you can never write them off. Coach Ian Moyes will ensure they play to their potential at the right end of the season. The Woodies danger men are Jackson Larkin, Michael Tamone and one of the best attackers in colts, Bradley Curtis.

GOrDON:Gordon have won 5 and lost 6 however play in the bottom half of the draw and hence should make the final 8. They play a very attractive brand of Rugby on their day. Gordon rely heavily on centre Henry Carmichael and Brothers Mathew and Steven Hayter.

WarriNGah:The Rats will have to beat both Parramatta and Penrith and rely on other results to make the semis. They are very hard to beat at Rat Park and have a strong forward pack. The pack is well lead by Jordon Reid and Tim Conlon.

In summary I am tipping a Sydney university versus Randwick Grand final with the students to win. I think Wests and Norths will be the dangers.

thiS SaturDayEasts play university, Manly host Eastwood, Norths play Souths, Warringah host West Harbour, Gordon play Randwick and Penrith host Parramtta.

FuNDraiSiNG FOr Seti taFuaAs many are aware now, Northern Suburbs first grade player Seti Tafua tragically damaged his spinal cord when he fell awkwardly on his head in a second grade game on June 23, resulting in his loss of motor skills from the waist down.A fundraising appeal last Saturday at Woollahra Oval, when host club Eastern Suburbs played Norths, raised over $12,000 for the Seti Tafua Fund established to assist with his immediate and future financial needs. The efforts of both clubs and player leadership groups in working together and organising the appeal in less than two weeks is testament to what club rugby is all about. The Eastwood Club generously donated $1000 and prior to Saturday the Parramatta Rugby Club collected and donated $600.

Seti taFua Day Next WeekNorths home game against Sydney university next Saturday, July 21 has been renamed Seti Tafua Day with all profits from gate takings being donated to Seti’s Fund.

There will be raffles, BBQs plus Jumping Castle, Face Painting and more for the kids – a family day. Entry just $10. Children under 16 admitted free. Enjoy a big day of rugby for a very special cause.

Peter SaMu iS a Quiet achieVer.

Born and raised in Melbourne, the back-rower spent the last two years honing his skills in Brisbane before moving to Sydney at the start of this season for a fresh opportunity with randwick.

“i wasn’t really getting much up in Brisbane so i decided to come and give it a crack down here,” he says.

Debuting in thirds, the quiet No. 8 made an instant impression at his new club and after two games was promoted to first grade by coach John Maxwell.

“he could still be playing u-20s but he’s very mature,” says the Galloping Greens mentor. “he runs the ball really well and his understanding and vision are really good for his age.”

the laidback Samu shows a maturity well beyond his years and says fitting in to life in Sydney has been a breeze. “it’s a lot like Melbourne really, life goes pretty fast, but i’ve fitted in well at randwick – there’s a good bunch of boys here.”

although adjusting to the Shute Shield was a different prospect, he received plenty of help and advice. “the competition is just a lot faster and stronger. it’s a big step up so i’ve just had to do a lot of work and try and perform on the weekends,” he says.

“Stephen hoiles has helped me out a lot, so that’s pretty good and (Southern Districts and Waratahs hooker) John ulugia is my cousin; he’s a pretty good teacher and i always ask him for advice.”

Samu’s rise hasn’t been without its setbacks, with a knee injury sidelining him for six matches. he worked hard on recovery though and returned with a try against West harbour two weeks ago.

Despite his extended stint on the sideline, Maxwell says he has been one of the club’s standouts and is certainly a player to watch.

“his defence is excellent and he’s a very good ball player,” says Maxwell. “he’s not a giant but he’s just got so much natural talent and he’ll keep developing even more skills over the next couple of years.”

NSW State National Party MP, Stephen Bromhead who is the Member for Myall Lakes on the Mid North Coast is a keen sport and Rugby man. Steve is a former player and President of the Old Bar and also the Forster-Tuncurry Rugby Clubs while he was also at the helm of the Mid North Coast Rugby union a few years ago.

To cut down on travel and after many years of negotiations the Mid North Coast Rugby Competition was split into the upper and Lower Mid North Coast Competitions in 2008 with teams from Manning, Old Bar, Wallamba, Forster and the Gloucester Cockies. He was involved in the formation of the Manning River Ratz who’s players mostly came from the Taree Bulldogs. This year there are seven teams in the Lower Mid-North Coast Competition with Harrington and new club, Myall Coast joining the other clubs. When Steve was President of the Forster-Tuncurry Rugby Club where he is a Life Member they were Grand Finalists in 2009 before winning the Premiership in 2010 and remain one of the strongest and most organised Rugby Clubs on the Coast.

Nationals MP, Steve Bromhead (right) presenting a cheque for $25,000 to Wallamba Bulls Rugby President, Mat Morris.

Stephen Bromhead loves his association with Rugby whether it be as a player or as a Golden Oldie with the Manning Mongrels while he is also a Foundation Member of Wallamba Bulls, Manning River Ratz and Harrington Hurricane’s Rugby Clubs. unlike most Politicians Stephen Bromhead

actually does a lot of work for the local community in many areas and is out about all of the time but his real passion is Rugby. Well Done Steve, the people of Myall Lakes appreciate all the work you do.

There are some amazing links between Rugby Clubs and the Surf Life Saving Clubs. The nexus is not determined alone by a factor of those clubs in a coastal suburb. Does anyone know how many Rugby players from their club were also members of Surf Clubs ? It is of interest to note that the 1953 Wallabies team that toured South Africa had 30 players including fifteen active Surf Club members. They took part in Surf Life Saving demonstrations, as did the 1933 Wallabies. Four of the 1953 group came from the Randwick Rugby Club and the Coogee Surf Club. They were Nick Shehadie, Col Windon, Keith Cross and Bob Outterside.

One of the “surfies” was Gavan Horsley who took part in a shark attack rescue shortly before the team was announced. These following players back in the Amateur era who gave voluntary service patrolling our Australian beaches were Murray Tate (Bondi), Tony Miller (Manly), Brian Johnson (Newport), Gavan Horsley (Burleigh Heads) and Mac Hughes (Palm Beach) to name a few.

East’s wily old man, the fantastic Billy McCarthy has coached all over the world and has been involved with the Beasties for many years. Billy was helping out the Easts 1sts Grade Colt’s a few weeks ago and was asked to speak to the team at half-time. His comment was “forwards, do you know what the definition of a forward is? It means you are meant to go forward”. The young Beasties pack looked a little confused although Billy’s inspirational talk worked as the Easts pack went forward in the second half and they turned the game around. That’s why they all love you Billy!

Which past Rugby Club President asked a few young ladies at the recent Ladies Day if they would keep the screaming down during the Post Match speeches only to be told "Shut the F… up and cop this big fat kiss on the lips you old bastard ". She would have had to bend down as this man is of very small stature. And yes this little man loves the Ladies Day’s and has done for years.
