2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE

ROUND 5

MATT'S MESSAGE ceo matt harris

After a week off the Tooheys Newcastle RL heads into this weekend?s round 5 action with some highly anticipated match-ups.

Round 4 results have created a scenario where all teams have lost and won at least one game. There appears to be no clear Business Plaza Cup competition favourite and South Newcastle?s win over West Newcastle confirms that on their day any team can win. The ladder has three teams on six points (Maitland, Kurri and Macquarie), two on four points (Central Newcastle and Lakes United) and three teams with one win (South Newcastle, West Newcastle and Cessnock). With twelve rounds left there is plenty of football left to play but all makes for a very interesting season.

This week?s game are all Saturday fixtures and feature the following clashes. West Newcastle host competition leaders Maitland at Harker Oval, two plays three with Kurri Kurri at home against Macquarie, South Newcastle travel to Cessnock to take on the Goannas, and Lakes United battle Central Newcastle in the local derby at Cahill Oval. Definitely some big matches. The BarTV match of the round will be Kurri Kurri v Macquarie and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League).

A big night next Friday for our senior Rebels team with the inaugural representative clash against a NSWRL combined Ron Massey squad. The game will kick-off at 7.30pm Friday 1st June at the new Maitland Sportsground. At the conclusion of the game a representative squad will be selected to play the Queensland Rangers on Saturday 16 June on the Gold Coast.

A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match-day scores by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGSThe weekend of gave players the opportunity to have a well-earned break away from the rigours of Rugby League. However some players still had busy weekends with Mitch Cullen and Lachlan Prestwich celebrating their birthdays, happy birthday men.

Furthermore we had Jono Zangieff Alchin compete in the Coal City Strongman competition, it is the first time he has competed in such an event and he finished first. However the family rivalry was on display for all to see this week at Kurri with Jono?s brother Reid duly noted spending time with the S & C coach Josh Day. On further investigation Reid has engaged Josh to be his personal trainer with the edict given to Josh that he wants to crush Jono in the next Strongman competition.

Sunday the 27th of May is the annual old-boys golf day, a chance for the community, sponsors, past and present players to compete for the coveted title of the Bulldogs best golfers. There will no doubt be creative stories from the by-gone era, stories of games won with wondrous tries under extreme adversity in hostile situations. Nevertheless I am sure they will not be as creative as the scoring from the Cullen, Wyborn, Gilmour and Hardy quartet.

Season 2018 has taken on a different appearance for Brock Gilmour a devoted clubman Brock has shown his commitment and selflessness towards the club giving up his time to co-coach the LLT team. Moreover this weekend sees Brock Gilmour play his 50th first grade game for the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs, since his arrival from the Burg (Helensburgh) Brock has been a consistent member of the first grade squad. He also has a great skillset for a Front Rower, and there have not been to many greater examples of the old adage a five eight in a Front Rower?s body. If asked Brock would tell you he could deputise in any position required in particular Half-back, Five Eight and Hooker with his much maligned kicking game coming into play.

Additionally Brock is held in high esteem by his peers and throughout the community, come and join us in saying thanks to Brock and celebrate his efforts thus far for the Bulldogs this weekend at the Sylvester Real Estate sportsground.

MACQUARIE SCORPIONS

PATRON: MR COL BURNS:

In Round 3 we were singing the praises of the Scorpions teams for coming away with four wins against the South Newcastle Lions well how quickly can the football gods turn against you and in Round 4 the Scorpions went down in the four grades to Maitland. The Under 19s were right in the game at 12-12 with only 15 minutes remaining but a few errors saw Maitland gain the momentum and come away with what was a comfortable win on the scoreboard but that was certainly not the case.

The Open Grade and Reserve Grade both went down to the wire in hard fought close games with both the Scorpions teams going down by two points after leading for the majority of the game. Again it was the Scorpions lack of ball control and errors in the second half that swung momentum back to Maitland and it is something both coaches will be addressing for this weekends clash against Kurri.

The First Grade side unfortunately were hit by injuries, but there were no excuses against a very good Maitland side on the day. The Scorpions started slowly and were down 12-0 after two soft tries close to the posts. For the next 20 minutes the Scorpions started to get back into the game and Matt Simon finished off some great work to score and bring the scores to 12-6. Unfortunately with only less than two minutes remaining before halftime the Scorpions made an error and Maitland capitalised to score in the corner and converted to leave the scores 18-6 at the halftime break.

Maitland then forged ahead to lead 34-10 early in the second half before the Scorpions hit back with two tries to trail 34-20 with eight minutes remaining and then appeared odds on to score another try under the posts but a dropped ball put paid to any comeback. The loss to Maitland in First Grade was only the Scorpions second loss at Peacock Field in three years a fantastic achievement.

This weekend the Scorpions travel to Kurri to take on the competition leaders with the Open Grade playing at 7.15pm on the Friday night and the Under 19s, Reserve Grade and First Grade to follow on the Saturday afternoon.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS

We knew the trip to Cessnock would be tough in Round 4 but it was great to see 4 of the 5 teams come away with victories. Congratulations to all the players, coaching, training and support staff that contributed to such a successful day.

This week we turn our attention to Central and our annual Creer Cup charity match. Again a huge thank you to Brendan Walsh and Creer Property for not only their support of this day but the great work they do in the community. This year we will be supporting Ronald McDonald House Newcastle and Charlie?s Run 4 Kids.

Lakes and Central have history dating back to before Lakes were even admitted to the Newcastle Rugby League. At the conclusion of the 1946 season the NRL created a fifth semi-final spot in reserve grade to gauge

the strength of the Belmont club. Belmont acquitted themselves well, defeating West 15-3 and Kurri 28-5 before losing 23-4 to a Central side that included future internationals Clive Churchill and Bobby Lulham.

Thank you for our sponsors ongoing support

WEST NEWCASTLE ROSELLAS

West s LLT. Our ladies met a determined Souths team who played a very impressive attacking and defensive game, winning 6 to 14. However, it was a game in which our players learnt some valuable tactics, which will help them as the season progresses. Teagan Glover scored our try, which Kristy Houghton converted.

Awards: Players Player, Coaches and Directors to Emily Caton.

U 19?s. Our young men continued their enterprising rugby league with a 30 to 16 win over Souths. Coach James Huff is faced with the difficult decision on who to select, as all our players are putting in such a good effort. This presents difficulty in selecting the award winners. Your Wests family enjoy watching you and encourage you to keep up your high standard. Tries to Hayden Comyns; Liam Wilkinson; Michael Ode; Jacob Payne; Lawson Lemessurier and Jack Bennett. Nicholas Haggerty kicked two goals, and Sam McKenna one goal. Awards: Players Player, Jack Bennett; Coaches and Directors went to Liam Marshall.

Open Grade. Suffered their first loss of the season going down to a good Souths side 14 to 20. Their commitment to training during their weekend off will be clearly seen against Maitland this weekend, and your Wests supporters will be there with you. Matthew Archer scored two tries and Reggie Wright one. Joshua Gorton kicked a goal.

Awards: Coaches, Players Player and Directors to Michael Finucane.

West s Reserve Grade. Our team faced a very enthusiastic Souths side going down 12 to 28. Each of our players are determined to bounce back this weekend against Maitland to demonstrate their premiership tit le. Tries to Jesse Andrews and Toa Matoka. Two goals to Joseph Griffith.

Awards: Players Player, Nick Mahon; Coaches, Luke Single and Directors Jesse Andrews.

West s First Grade. This game again showed that our players each have a target on their chests, as the team to defeat. There were incidents in the game which must have frustrated coach Matt Lantry, as they would not have been part of his game plan. Your Wests family and supporters fully support you Matt and know you will have us there in September. Tries to Matt Shipway; Michael Hendry and Ryan Walker. Sam Keenan kicked two goals.

Awards: Players Player, Tama Koopu; Coaches, Mark Taufua; Directors, Ben Stone.
