“..there is no such thing as society. There are individual men andwomen, and there are families” Prime Minister MargaretThatcher, talking to Women'sOwn magazine, October 31 1987

This photographic portraitexhibition by local photographerIan Blythe explores the familyhistory of the population ofNottinghamshire and gives anamazing insight in to theformation our modern society.

Nottinghamshire has enduredmajor hardships due to theeconomic changes over the years, but has also benefited fromprivate investment and an influxof people, creating a diverse

population that has seen manychanges in its history. Familiesendure certain hardships in thehope that one day theirdescendants may be born to abetter life.

Shooting portraits supported byarchive material, illustrates thisperson's place within society andshows the journey that theirfamily took to take their placewithin the community where theyhave chosen to live today.

No such thing as society -Ian Blyth

The Campaign for Drawing has one aim: to get everyone drawing!

This year as part of “The Big Draw” that takes place every October Rufford Craft Centre will be invitingeveryone to get drawing and bring the outside in. The Gallery will become a blank canvas for you totransform into a giant work of art bringing the country park into the gallery space.

Why? Drawing helps us to think, invent and communicate - regardless of age and ability. The Campaign forDrawing took its initial inspiration from the visionary Victorian artist and writer, John Ruskin, who drew inorder to see the world more clearly.

'Bring the outside in' is the theme for “The Big Draw” events at Rufford Craft Centre, Sherwood Forest andBestwood Country Park. Please check for details at each venue. Participants will also be able to enter theirwork for the county card competition, look out for full details coming soon!

All visitors are welcome to add to the work and materials will be provided. If you are a school or group thatwould like to come and be part of “The Big Draw” please contact [email protected]
