MADRID BARBARIANS R.F.C. NEWSLETTER NUMBER 6. SEPTEMBER 2013

Welcome back Barbarians! After our summer break the season starts again with lots of news. As something usual for the Madrid Barbarians a new season means new faces and again new division, this time 1st division regional and 4th division regional, a new challenge for our two new teams.

People coming and people going is one of the Baabaas rituals for every new season but we must say that this year has been extraordinary in new players as many guys from Universidad Autónoma have joined us, wich has made posible to start a new team in 4th division. We hope you find our club as your new rugby home and that you feel comfortable and happy with us. We also have new guys from Nebrija wich we must say with sadness that has recently disappeard. And of course we also

have our share of expats joining us, like Lyndon, Idris, Harris, Pip or Eric, and of course Bimbo’s return. Some of them played last year after the league ended and even went to the Baabaas North Conquest Tour. Welcome all of you and we hope you stay for long.

New, new, new... it seems everything is new in the beginning of the season, but true, we have also a new head coach, Angel Arribas, who is already working hard with both teams and organizing new game plans. We also give a warm welcome back to Lote, who’s been getting our lads fit in the preseason and taking over the backs coaching.

PreseasonAs previous years, we’ve played a few friendly matches

against Hortaleza and Atletico de Madrid, and we’ve had the Club’s day with a friendly match between all our players and some cream and beer baptisms for the new ones.

League kick offThe leagues have just started with the hardests luck for us. We started with a two-in-a-row games against CRC (1st division) and Avila (4th division) with two defeats. Nothing new for us in a league kick-off but we must work hard to start playing our game plans and adding points in the table. We know the game, we’ve got the players, we’ve got the spirit, so it’s just a matter of time that things start to work out.

Go Baa-baas, go!!

New season... new teams

Thanks Gus Wardle for your unexpected visit!

Hello everybody:

My name is Paco and nowadays I’m the proudest President of a rugby Club.

For the first time, what three years ago was for a few people a dream and a wish, is becoming true; The birth of a rugby Club, our rugby Club, the Madrid Barbarians RFC. Plenty of things have occurred since we started; lots of work has been necessary, but finally, we’re in the exact situation to boast that Madrid Barbarians RFC has developed from a team into a Club.

There’s a lot to thank, first of all, the Committee member’s work, wich with no doubt it’s been essential to achieve this very important change. This work I’m talking about is not always seen but, due to its results, it is enjoyed by the rest of us. This “work on the shade” keeps this club alive and makes it grow bigger and bigger every day. In adition, it’s necessary to also thank those who have played or coached for this Club and they’ve had to leave us. They have helped by putting in their two cents to spread the world around the name and the meaning of belonging to our Club. They will always have our door openned any time they want to come back. They left but they stayed in our hearts as we stay in theirs and, as I first said a few years ago when I was captain: “Once a Barbarian, always a Barbarian”. And last but not least, I don’t want to forget those who continue with us showing every season that they agree with the values we try to introduce, they are without a doubt the most important part of this Club, so thank you very much. This loyalty is making Madrid Barbarians achieve all its milestones.

This new starting season is full of new faces to welcome, first of all Angel, Madrid Barbarians new Head Coach who is showing a great enthusiasm on what the Club is able to do. He also shows a very inspiring view of the future of our Club and he wants to take part of it. We also have to welcome the big amount of players who have joined us this season, mainly from Universidad Autónoma, some of them with a high level of rugby, team that Angel coached last year, which are fitting in amazingly with the rest of players.

For the reasons described above we’ve been able to enter two teams into Madrid leagues, something unthinkable just a few months ago. One team into First Regional Division and other team into Fourth Regional Division. Coming down to training has changed into a pleasure when you see more than 30 players every training sesh.

Having to teams fighting inside Madrid leagues brings a big sense of commitment and responsability to the Club from everybody. That’s why I ask every Club member to help us with the effort of commitment and responsibility required to make this Club bigger, stronger and much more respected and supported inside spanish rugby spheres.

Thank you all for wanting to belong to this dream that is becoming true and for making those who thought a few years ago that this dream could be possible, feel at least as proud as I feel when I look at what this Club is turning into.

Thank you very muchPacoMadrid Barbarians RFC President“Proud to be a Barbarian”
