Definition

Merriam-Webster• ‘a guide listing specific criteria for grading or

scoring academic papers, projects, or tests’

Why?

• For Students:– To review the set expectations for a specific task– To submit a better quality work– To receive feedback on student learning• during the process

– Examples: Playing a musical instrument; Speech;

• end product– Examples: Reports, Research Papers, etc.

Why?

• For instructors– To focus on student centered learning• on what students should learn • on what instructors should teach

– Guide and evaluate student performance– To be consistent and fair while grading

Types of Rubrics• Two types of rubrics– Holistic & – Analytic

Holistic

• All criteria are assessed simultaneously• Faster as it takes less time• Does not provide or communicate feedback

Analytic

• Takes more time to assess• Provides and communicates feedback for
