    Games of the XXX

    Olympiad from London

The August News Letter has been combined with

September for a late summer edition.

I had been in the United Kingdom for more than a

month and although I started to write this edition

while over there in England, I was having so much fun

at the 2012 London Olympics that it simply had to

    take a back seat.

There has not been too much news to write about

over the past 2 months and unfortunately, it was

decided that the Les Schwab Bocce Extravaganza had

to be cancelled, which I was hoping to write an article

    about on my return.

Having attended the Men’s Team Gymnastics in the

O2 Arena, Athletics in the magnificent Olympic

Stadium located in the Olympic Park, a Centre Court

seat at Wimbledon for the most fantastic semi-final

day that anyone could have wished to see, seated

among the VIP’s, only seven rows back from the

hallowed turf, a first Wembley Stadium visit to see

Japan v France in the Women’s Soccer and finally

capped, the day before I returned home to the Bay

Area, with a second visit to Wembley Stadium to see

the USA women win the Gold Medal match against

Japan, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have

experienced that once in a lifetime event.

    Sad to Announce

It is my sad task to report that in August we lost another, previous board member, of our club.

Ray Gaudenzi passed away after a long battle.

Raymond Gaudenzi 09-23-1928 ~ 08-07-2012. Resident of Martinez, Ray passed

away peacefully at home on August 7, 2012. Ray, 83, was born in the year 1928 in

Martinez to Luigie "Louie" and Teresa where he spent his entire life, outside of

traveling with his wife, Alice. Ray is survived by his wife Alice of 64 Years. He came

from a family of four children, he being the youngest. Ray and Alice have two

children, Barbara Gaudenzi Worley (Richard) and Steven Gaudenzi, six

Grandchildren, two Great-Grandchildren, and numerous Nieces and Nephews. Ray

served as a member of the United States Marine Corp and received an honorable

discharge. After graduating from Alhambra High School in 1948, Ray worked in a

service station until joining Shell Oil in 1950. He was assigned to the Control Lab

and then went on to the Research Lab. In May of 1987 he retired as a Head

Inspector, with over 36 years of service. Ray said, "I am enjoying my retirement

years" with my wife Alice and family. Ray and Alice loved to travel and vacationed

in their home in Tahoe for over 40 years and recently in Mexico. Ray has served as

a member on the Alumni Board of Directors, Shell Activities Association (SAA) and

Shell Credit Union. Ray enjoyed playing bocce at the Ligure Club and served for

two years as President. He was a long time member of the local bocce leagues and

prided himself as a team member, being champs for the years 2005, 2007 and

2009. He was an avid SF 49er fan.

    Martinez Bocce Federation Playoffs

    From September 29th

to the Final Fours on October 6th

the club will be holding the playoffs for 2012.

I don’t know about you but this year seems to have flown by faster than any previously and it seems only a short

while ago that we were taking this season’s team registrations. So with each team having between 2 and 4 matches

still to play, positions of those teams that are to make the playoffs will soon be finally decided.

For details as to how the end of season plays out, refer to the back of the Handbook or go to the website which you

can access from the link listed below. If you can’t work it out from there, write to me.

Senior Bocce Season ends with Prize Giving for the top 4

teams in each division and a great chicken lunch for all.

Once again we have completed another successful Senior Bocce Season and I would like to

take this time to thank Fini Gonsalves for the tireless efforts that she puts into this annual

league. For a lady of such diminutive stature she certainly is a bundle of energy. It must be

    the Dutch heritage in her.

Also our thanks to Carlos Amspoker for the Scorekeeping throughout the season and to all

those people who assisted this year.

    Thank you. Our Fini Gonsalves

Waiting for lunch to be served at the end of the morning’s activities on the courts

    Heard in Passing

I have often heard the following words when players are taking measurements and most recently last Saturday,

“to the center of the pallino it’s”.

The most accurate measurement cannot be taken to the center of the pallino simply because, if you are not standing directly

above it, you will not pinpoint the actual center. The measurement taken will be a “Perception” of the eye and may vary from

    viewer to viewer.

FYI This is RULE “X” of the Martinez Bocce Federation.

    X. MEASUREMENTS: All measurements will be made from the inside dimension of the bocce ball to the inside dimension of

the pallino. Do not touch balls. Only an official and one representative from each of the opposing teams may be present during

measurements. Both Capos must agree on which team has the point(s). If both teams have balls remaining, the team that does

not have the closest ball to the pallino rolls again. If all balls have been played, points are awarded based on the balls that are

actually closest to the pallino in accordance with Rule IX. FRAME OR GAME IS OVER WHEN BOTH CAPOS AGREE.

    Alternative Waterfront Access

The email below is from Tim Tucker, City Engineer, City of Martinez, regarding the

Martinez Alternative Waterfront Access and I have included it by way of general interest

for members of the Martinez Bocce Federation who may wish to keep abreast of such

    activities.

    Letter reads:-

I want to thank those of you who attended the second Martinez Alternative Waterfront Access meeting.

We received a lot of feedback that we will be using to help us to come up with three alternatives that

address the need for an alternate access to the waterfront for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles.

Other factors that will be considered as part of the selection process are cost, right-of-way requirements,

traffic impacts, utility relocation requirements, architectural/aesthetic considerations, and

    constructability.

We will continue to update our web site with project reports and other information as it become available.

The project can be found on the Engineering Department’s drop-down menu on the City’s web site or by

    clicking the following link.

    http://www.cityofmartinez.org/depts/engineering/alternate_access_to_martinez_waterfront(formerly_cour

    t_street_overcrossing_study)_.asp

We will have a third meeting in September/October 2012 to present and discuss the three alternatives

selected. I will be sending an email approximately one week prior to the announcing the date/time of the

    third meeting.

Once again thank you for your interest and input. The information provided will make this a better

project! If you have questions or need more information please call me at 925-372-3562.
