PREFACE
The University of Sydney was incorporated by an Act of theLegislature of New South Wales on the 1st of October, 1850.This Act was amended by subsequent Acts, enlarging the scopeof the University, and the whole have been consolidated in theUniversity and University Colleges Act, 1900-1952.
By a Eoyal Charter issued 7th February, 1858, the same rank,style, and precedence are granted to Graduates of the Universityof Sydney as are enjoyed by Graduates of Universities withinthe United Kingdom.
By the University and University Colleges Act of 1900 andthe subsequent Act of 1912, the University of Sydney is declaredto be a body politic and corporate, consisting of a Senate con-stituted of four Fellows appointed by the Governor, one Fellowelected by the members of the Legislative Council, one Fellowelected by the members of the Legislative Assembly, five.Fellowsrepresentative of the teaching staff of the University, ten Fellowselected by the graduates of the University, three Fellows electedby the aforesaid Fellows, and the Vice-Chancellor for the timebeing. The term of oifice of a Fellow is fixed by statute at fiveyears, and at two years in the case of Fellows representative ofthe teaching staff. The Act of 1936 provides for the election ofan additional Fellow, a Graduate of the University of Sydney, tobe representative of the undergraduates. The term of the officeof Chancellor is fixed by by-law at three years; that of theDeputy-Chancellor is limited by statute to one year. In bothcases the retiring officer is eligible for re-election. The Senatehas power to appoint all Professors and other Officers, and hasthe entire management and superintendence over the affairs ofthe University, with power to make by-laws governing the disci-pline, curriculum, and other matters, which by-laws, however,must be submitted for the approval of the Governor-in-Council.
The University is financed by statutory and special grantsfrom the New South "Wales Government, by fees paid bystudents, and by income from benefactions. In 1952 the NewSouth Wales Government statutory grant was 125,000, andwith additional special grants, the total of the New SouthWales Government contribution was 434,565. The Universityreceived in 1952 a subsidy of 302,762 from the CommonwealthGovernment under a formula designed to provide Common-wealth funds for University purposes. Amongst the bene-factions may be mentioned the Challis bequest in 1888; the gift

by Thomas Fisher in 1885 which made possible the buildingand establishment of the Fisher Library; the Peter NicolRussell gifts for the establishment of the Peter Nicol Russell,School of Engineering and the endowment of scholarships;the Samuel McCaughey bequests; the Oswald Watt bequest;and the G. H. Bosch bequest which allowed for the establish-ment of the Bosch Chairs of Medicine, Surgery, Bacteriologyand Histology.
. There are ten Faculties in the University, viz., Arts, Law,Medicine, Science, Engineering, Dentistry, Veterinary Science,Agriculture, Economics, and Architecture. Women areadmitted to all University privileges equally with men.
In the Faculty of Arts three Degrees are givennamely,Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts,and Doctor of Letters. Thecurriculum of study for the Pass Degree of B.A. extends overa period of not less than three years, during which students arerequired to attend lectures and pass examinations. HonoursSchools have been established providing courses for the HonoursB.A. Degree extending over four years.
Courses for Diplomas in Education and in Anthropology areprovided.
Evening Lectures are given, which include all the subjectsnecessary for the Pass and Honours Degree of Bachelor of Arts,with limited options.
In the Faculty of Law the Degrees of LL.B., LL.M.. andLL.D. are given. The curriculum of study for the Degree ofLL.B. may extend over four years for full-time students andfive years for part-time students. The Degree of Bachelor ofLaws is recognised under certain conditions by the SupremeCourt of New South Wales as a qualification for admission asa Barrister or Solicitor.
In the Faculty of Medicine five Degrees are granted, viz.,Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Doctor of Medicine,Master of Surgery, and Bachelor of Science (Medical). Thecourse of study for the Degree of M.B. and B.S. extends overa period of six years. Diplomas in Public Health, TropicalMedicine and Hygiene, Psychological Medicine, TropicalHygiene, Diagnostic Radiology, Theraneutic Rndinlngy, Anaes-thesia, Clinical Pathology, Laryngology and Otorhinology,Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Opthalmology and DermatologicalMedicine are also granted.

The Degrees in Medicine and Surgery granted by the Uni-versity of Sydney may be registered upon the Colonial List ofthe British Medical Register, under section 13 of The ImperialMedical Act of 1886.
In the Faculty of Science the Degrees of Bachelor of Science,Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Science,Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Bachelor of Science inPhysical Education are given. The course for the Pass Degreeof B.Sc. extends over a period of at least three years and forthe Honours B.Sc. Degree over a period of four years. Forthe Degree of Bachelor' of Science in Forestry two years arespent at the University and two years at the AustralianForestry School at Canberra. Courses for the Degree ofBachelor of Science in Physical Education which extend overfour years are in abeyance for the time being.
In the Faculty of Engineering Degrees of Bachelor are givenin the several branches of Engineering, viz., Civil Engineering,Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Mining Engineering,Chemical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering. Thecurriculum covers four years.
The degrees of Master of Engineering, Master of EngineeringScience, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science inEngineering are also given.
In the Faculty of Dentistry the curriculum extends over aperiod of four years, leading to the degree of Bachelor of DentalSurgery. The degrees of Master of Dental Surgery, Doctor ofPhilosophy and Doctor of Dental Science are also given.
In the Faculty of "Veterinary Science there are granted theDegrees of Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Doctor ofPhilosophy, and Doctor of Veterinary Science. For theBachelor's degree a curriculum of five years is prescribed.
In the Faculty of Agriculture the curriculum, extending overfour years, leads to the Pass Degree or Bachelor of Science inAgriculture. For the Honours Degree, a further year's study isrequired. Degrees of Master of Science in Agriculture, Doctorof Philosophy and Doctor of Science in Agriculture are alsogiven.
Tn the Faculty of Economics there are granted the Degreesof Bachelor and Master of Economics, the course of study forthe former of which extends over a period of not less than foar
years.

In the Faculty of Architecture there is a five-yeaT curriculumleading to the degree of Bachelor of Architecture. The degreesof Master of Architecture and of Doctor of Philosophy arealso awarded. A course of three years leading to a Diplomain Town and Country Planning is provided. ;
Degrees of Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity aregranted.
The degree of Master of Education is awarded.
Courses for two years leading to a Diploma in Social Studieshave been established.
An Act to provide for the establishment of Colleges ofResidence was passed by the Legislature during the Sessionof 1854.
Colleges in connection with the Church of England, RomanCatholic, Presbyterian and Methodist churches have been estab-lished. A College for "Women has also been established on anon-sectarian basis. There are now six colleges within theUniversity grounds.
The Act of 1937 provided for the establishment and main-tenance of one or more Colleges outside the Sydney metropoli-tan area. The first College to be established was the !NewEngland University College situated at Armidale. CoursesaTe provided there which lead to the Degrees of Bachelor ofArts and Bachelor of Science.
