Principal’s Corner Welcome to Rising Sun Elementary School! It’s hard to believe that the first interim period is already over. It has been exciting to watch students learn and grow. One of our goals this year is to to help students understand their role as the one in charge of their own feeling, thinking, and learning behaviors. When students feel a sense of ownership, they want to engage in academic tasks and persist in learning. We continue to reinforce children’s positive behavior, emphasizing the use of reinforcing teacher language as our students strive to, “Respect Self * Respect Others * Respect the Environment.” We want RSES to be a place where children feel happy and engaged and where parents/guardians feel welcome and involved. We look forward to collaborating with this great community as we work together to make certain every student has a great year! Sincerely, Mrs. Cindy Fitzpatrick RSES Tiger Gazette Mrs. Cindy Fitzpatrick Mrs. Sherri Isaac Principal Assistant Principal October/November 2018 Academic Calendar: Monday, Nov. 5 - End of 1st Marking Period Tuesday, Nov. 6 - Schools closed for students Wednesday, Nov. 14 - Report Cards sent home Wednesday, Nov. 21 - Schools closed for students and 10mo staff, Thanksgiving Holiday Thursday, Nov. 22 - Friday, Nov. 23 - Schools/Offices closed, Thanksgiving Holiday Friday, Dec. 7 - Interim Period ends Monday, Dec. 17 - Interims sent home Monday, Dec. 24 thru Tuesday, Jan 1 - Schools/Offices closed for Winter Holiday Wednesday, Jan. 2 - Schools closed for Students and 10mo Staff, Winter Holiday School Safety Updates: During the month of September, all students participated in lessons teaching them about what to do if there is an active threat in or around the building. Teachers read the book, I’m Not Scared… I’m Prepared to students and used the terms, shepherd, sheep, and wolf to refer to the teacher, students, and intruder. Students are prepared and empowered to react in the event of an active threat. We will be holding our first ALICE drill on the morning of October 25th. Students and staff will be made aware that they are participating in a drill and that it is not a real situation. During this drill, students will practice what they have learned. On the afternoon of November 16, 2018, we will be participating in a Red Man drill. This drill is led by the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office. During this drill, a police officer will dress up in a padded red suit and act as the intruder. Students and staff will be made aware of the drill and that the person in the suit is not an actual bad guy. After the drill, we will debrief with all students and they will have an opportunity to see the police officer who was dressed as the red man. This drill has been performed in many other schools in the county and has received positive feedback from those who have participated. Keep an eye out for more information concerning this drill as we get closer to the date. Car Rider Loop and the Parking Lot: We would greatly appreciate it if parents choosing to transport children to school in the morning use the car loop. In order to keep all students safe and keep the flow of traffic moving, students should not be dropped off in the bus loop or parking lot. It is not safe for students to cross in front of the buses even when accompanied by an adult. We realize that traffic gets backed up and you may have to wait in the car rider line for several minutes, but please remember that the safety of all students is our first concern. In the morning, doors to the building from the car loop will open at 8:40 AM. Please do not release your child from your car until the school doors are opened and staff members are present. To increase the efficiency of the car loop, we ask that all adults remain in the car. Our school staff will assist students who need help getting out of the car. Please have students ready to get out of the car upon your arrival. This includes having shoes and coats on, book bags packed, and all materials readily available for a quick exit. Staff will enter the building and close all doors promptly at 9:00 am. If you arrive after 9:00 am you must accompany your child inside and sign your child in at the main office. Thank you for helping to make our arrival and dismissal procedures safe!

The Great Southeast ShakeOut:

On Thursday, Oct. 18, all CCPS schools will participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.

Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold at 2:35pm on Thursday, Oct. 18 for the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills!

Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you live, work, or travel. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and for everyone to become prepared.

Why is a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill important? To respond quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you.

RSES Birthday Club:

In lieu of parents bringing cupcakes and other food items into the classroom/lunchroom to celebrate a students’ birthday, Pleasant View Baptist Church has volunteered their time to help us implement our RSES Birthday Club this year.

Students will receive an invitation in their classroom to bring their packed or purchased lunch to the stage where they will sit at a decorated table during their lunch shift, with a friend of their choosing, to eat their lunch. We will celebrate the last Friday of every month.

Pleasant View Baptist Church will provide a small gift bag filled with non-food items for the birthday student and will lead a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for all students celebrating. Those students with a summer birthday will be invited throughout the year to come celebrate.

Due to the limited space we are not able to invite parents to participate in this event at this time. We also remind everyone that we are no longer able to approve cupcakes or other food items for birthday celebrations.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
