From the Chairman’s Desk.... Talk on “Business Process Improvement
& Problem Solving using 6 Sigma”
(contd. on page 2)
A technical guest lecture meeting was held on 28th
January 2017 at 5.00 pm in IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre
auditorium. The topic of the day was on “Business
Process Improvement & Problem Solving using 6
Sigma”. Er P Rajamani FIE, Council Member,
Electrical Engineering Division, IE(I) welcomed the
gathering and introduced the Chief Guest Er R Babu,
AMIE, M.E., Consulting Engineer, Chennai. Er R Babu
delivered the lecture on the above topic with power point
presentation.
In his speech, 6 Sigma is a customer centric, business
focused, process oriented methodology driven by Data
and Facts. This methodology is used to solve the business
problems and continuous improvement needs through
structured manner of Define, Measure, Analyse,
Improve and Control in short DMAIC Methodology.
This is continuously aimed in removing the Variations
across the entire Business process to enhance the quality
and remove the various inefficiencies and Sustain the
benefits and approach as a Culture on a long run.
In short statistically the methodology is focused on
moving the mean to Customer Target and Reducing the
Variations across the business process value chain.
Dear Engineers,
I am extremely happy to share my views and ideas
through this News Bulletin.
In the recent committee meeting held at Tamilnadu
State Centre, all my committee members had come
with lot of suggestions and ideas for organizing
technical activities under the banner of Tamilnadu
State Centre. This gives a moral boost for me to
conduct more number of technical activities to join
with our Headquarters, which is going to celebrate the Centenary celebrations
in 2020.
It is a happy moment for me to share with you that 6 more Local Centres have
been added to Tamilnadu State Centre. Previously formed District Centres are
upgraded as Local Centres viz. Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Thanjavur, Erode,
Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. I welcome the Local Centres into the ambit of
Tamilnadu State Centre and wish them to join with us in all respects for the
development of the Institution of Engineers (India).
I wish to inform you that there is a slight change in the dates of celebrating the
third Students' Convention in Madurai. As the first activity outside Chennai
the third Student’s Convention on the theme ‘Innovation, Technology and
Knowledge Economy’ will be held on 17th and 18th March 2017 instead of
17th and 18th February 2017 at KLN College of Engineering, Pottapalayam,
Sivagangai District.
It is also envisaged to organize National Conventions in Marine or Aerospace
Engineering in the year 2018 and the proposals have been forwarded to
Headquarters for their approval.
For any educational body, the alumni’s are the real strength. Considering the
importance our Headquarters have planned to arrange for alumni’s meet from
this year. The Alumni meet will be arranged at Chennai during March 2017.
Through this issue, I reiterate my team members to focus on approaching the
Engineering Colleges and Polytechnic Colleges and urge the CEOs of the
colleges to establish Students’ Chapter at their colleges. Continuous follow-
up will yield good results in this regard.
My immediate concern is to increase the membership strength of our
Institution. The Chairman and members of the Membership Committee should
aim for a massive membership drive in Engineering Colleges and Industries
requesting their faculties and engineers to enroll themselves as the members
of IEI.
I request my member friends to bring in more and more new members into
the fold of IEI with a slogan ‘EVERY MEMBER INDUCT A NEW
MEMBER’ to double the strength. Let us all unite to boost the membership
strength of IEI.

Report on Energy Conservation Day
07.01.2017
The program started by planting 150 Saplings in IE(I),
TNSC, Premises as well as distributed to the participants
by emphasizing on green being the top layer towards
Energy conservation.
Welcome speech was given by Eminent Engineers from
various organization from IEI, IET, PCRA,TNEB namely
Er. Jayanthi EE/TANTRANSCO, Er P Arunachalam EE/
TANGEDCO, Er U B Eleni, CE/TANGEDCO, Er. V S
Sriraja Balaguru, AE/TANGEDCO.
The motto to ensure the usage of energy in an effective
manner can be executed only by Youths of future society
was proved by the Vision 10MW team, from Dr. MGR
Educational and Research Institute University under the
leadership of Dr. L. Ramesh, Director MGR vision 10MW.
Dr.MGR Educational and Research Institute University
started energy awareness and renewable initiative forum
in the year 2013 with the objective to concentrate more on(contd. on page 3)
The start of anything is checking or reviewing what the
customer wants. What is our Business Goal. Precisely
convert the Customer needs by removing the emotional
contents into a Critical Customer Requirements. Now, apply
the current Need of the Business. Should it be resolving the
existing Bottlenecks to meet the customer Needs or business
needs.Upon deciding the priority on hand, define it as a
business Case and what the business is going to benefit by
ironing out the improvement or removing the Roadblocks.
The Leadership team must identify the various opportunities
available to remove the current pain for the business and
the Customer.
Derive a SIPOC that gives an overview of the entire
business problem from Customer to the various people
directly or indirectly influencing the situation negatively or
positively with the existing process. Capture the current
data and identify the Gap to reach the Business Goal.
Analyze the various possible causes and Validate the causes
to derive the Root cause for the situation. Use FMEAs and
Pugh Matrix to select the feasible solution to resolve the
existing situation. Ensure the solution is piloted to derive
Confidence and acceptance across the Team of leadership
and Users. Further reinforce the solution implementation
with the right PROCESS Control steps and Ensure the
Sustenance of the improved Process solution. 6SIGMA is
not a Training alone but needs application to a real-life
business situation else it is like learning car driving without
actually Driving. 6 SIGMA Practice has been applied across
various spectrum of Industries and brings in a tangible
Sustained Financial Savings across Operations in a mfg.,
Engineering, Development functions in many industries.
Er P Rajamani, FIE, Council Member, Electrical
Engineering Division, IE(I) presented the memento to the
Chief Guest Er R Babu . Er R Ramdoss, MIE, Honorary
Secretary proposed the vote of thanks. About 40 members
participated in the program.

The Energy Conservation day was celebrated at the
Institution of Engineers(India), Tamilnadu State Centre on
7th January 2017 at 5.00 pm in IE(I), Tamilnadu State
Centre auditorium.
Energy Conservation day was proposed by TamilNadu
Electricity Board(TNEB)Engineers to be conducted
together in Institution of Engineers (India) in association
with Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET). Er P
R Seshadri, FIE Past Chairman of IE(I), TNSC welcomed
the gathering .
The concept of Energy conservation refers to the reducing
of energy consumption through using less of an energy
service. Energy conservation differs from efficient energy
use, which refers to using less energy for a constant service.
Driving less is an example of energy conservation. Driving
the same amount with a higher mileage vehicle is an
example of energy efficiency. Energy conservation and
efficiency are both energy reduction techniques.

research and development on micro grid and energy
conservative opportunities to help the country to save
energy. To help this, vision was inaugurated by President
Er. A.C.S. Arunkumar on May 2014 entitled MGR VISION
10MW - initiative to save 10MW of Energy in a period of
10 years. The methodology of the conservation plan was
put into action to conduct an Electrical Energy Audit in
residential houses, commercial building and industries, and
recent research based technology called micro grid work
was put into action in parallel with the Electrical Energy
Audit and a software package is designed for the society
through which the general public can audit their respective
homes and get a good outcome in a reduction in power
consumption as well as in tariff bills.
An inspirational brand video is an excellent way to
emotionally relate with audience was beautifully picturized
by Er T Murugaselvam AEE/TANGEDCO and his team,
Connecting viewers to the interior of Energy conservation
vision, while painting a "big picture", encouraging an
emotional engagement that is resonating till date in the
audience mind, which can be viewed in YouTube, https:/

Building technologies, the key to designing a passive solar
building is to best take advantage of the local climate.
Elements to be considered include window placement and
glazing type, thermal insulation, thermal mass, and shading.
Passive solar design techniques can be applied most easily
to new buildings, but existing buildings can be retrofitted
which was emphasized by Er.Ganesh Jayarraj, SE/UPCL/
TANGEDCO.
To save the future environment, Green Energy is the need
of the hour to protect our environment from drastic
changes, to save the depleting resources for our future
generations. The rate at which the energy is being produced
and consumed can damage our world in many ways and
the need for tapping the renewable energy was delivered
by eminent Engineer S. Sankara Narayanan EE/
TANGEDCO.
Sustainable development has been defined as balancing
the fulfillment of human needs with the protection of the
natural environment so that these needs can be met not
only in the present, but in the indefinite future there should
be alternate methods for tapping CO2 by providing
incentive to the entrepreneurs in reducing carbon footprints.
The technique to reduce carbon footprints was well
coordinated by Er J Balamurugan AE/TANGEDCO, who
was the convenor of this Energy Conservation day.
Vote of Thanks was summarized by Er R Ramdoss,
Honorary Secretary, IE(I)-TNSC. About 100 members
participated in the program.
