some real severe off-roading, and donkeys make great

cart-pullers, for everyday use.

If your going to buy any of these guys, I

recommend doing it like your going to buy a horse,

just minus the riding in some cases. Pet them all

over, wave flags everywhere, see how they react

around tiny children, all that good stuff.

Mini horses have a cool use I haven’t mentioned

yet. They make amazing therapy and seeing-eye

animals. They live longer than dogs, and are compact

enough that they don’t take up too much space.

They’re often extremely friendly.

They often display a bit more intelligence than

a dog, and take to the work with ease. Not to

mention, their a bit easier to hear with the sound of

their hooves, and near impossible to loose in a

crowd. Just follow the sounds of coos and

exclamations of surprise.

Side note: I want to end this article with a special

announcement. RRT club is having an open ride, The

30th Annual Prize Ride on October 13th, at 10 am.

It’s a five dollar parking fee, and you can purchase

raffle tickets for a dollar each. It’s going to be awesome,

so make sure to let your riding friends know.

Thank you guys so much for reading! I really

hope you guys consider a barn buddy for your horse.

I hope to see you guys at the RRT Prize Ride, and I

hope to see you guys win some really great prizes. I

also hope to meet your friends! Its always great to

find some more people with common interests. Have

an amazing month, and I hope to see

you at the RRT meeting next month.

There is much research still in progress of the17 breeds of donkeys currently known in Europe. Many originate in Cyprus, Italy, France, and Spain.Over 50 million donkeys and mules exist in theworld, but despite this, the number of pure-bredanimals within each breed is generally low, withseveral on the verge of extinction.

Gene and I work with a rescue to protect, rehabilitate, release, or re-home free roaming donkeys(see article part 3 in December). We also work towardpreserving the Mediterranean Miniature Donkey breedat our own “Wee Ass Haven”, (see article part 2 inNovember’s Newsletter).

Below are a few Donkey Terms:Jack – an intact maleJennet, Jenny – the femaleBurro – commonly thought of as feral asses in the southwest United StatesDonkey gelding, gelded jack – castrated jack

Hybrid Crosses:Hinny – cross between stallion and a jennyMule – cross between a jack and a mareMiniature donkey – stands at 36 inches or less at the withers at maturityStandard donkey – between 36 inches and 54 inches at the withers at maturityMammoth donkey – greater than 54 inches (13.2 hands) at the withersGenetic makeup – domestic horses have 64 chromosomes, the domestic ass has 62, and the mule and hinny have 63.

The Donkey... A Donkey is Not a Horse

It can be difficult to draw blood from a donkey’sjugular vein if using the same technique as with thehorse. The donkey’s jugular vein is not palpablethroughout the neck because the middle third iscovered by a thick muscle. A blood sample is easierto draw by a needle puncture in the upper or lowerone-third of the jugular groove.

Medical Differences

Anatomic, Medical, andBehavior Differences

Between Donkeys and HorsesThe ear length of donkeys is usually greater than

in mules, which, in turn, have longer ears than horses.

Donkey and mule withers cannot hold a saddlewell because they are relatively rounded ascompared to the horse.

Head shapes are obviously different. Thedonkey’s mane and tail hair is stiff and it’s tail hasshort hair, whereas mule tails may be more likehorses. Donkey hooves are smaller than those forequal sized horses, with the frog set more towardthe heel than it is in the horse. The pastern anglesfor donkeys are more upright than those of a horse.Donkeys do not have chestnuts in the rear legs ashorses do. In mules, rear chestnuts may be absentor smaller as compared to horses.

The Bars stop at theHorizontal Midpointwhere the fulcrum pointwould be on a horse insteadof the midpoint of the frog.

The horizontal midpointis also the NARROWESTpart of the donkey hoof vs.the widest in the horse.

The Frog is weight bearingand its base sits wellbehind the heel baseline.

Behavior DifferencesDonkeys are very stoic when it comes to showing

outward signs of pain. This may be detrimental to earlydiagnosis and treatment of abnormalities. Forexample, a colic situation may go undetected until itis in more advanced stages so you should assumethe presence of a severe problem when a donkeydisplays even mild signs of pain. Another example, you should assume that a donkey that will not eat isfairly sick, especially if the animal refuses grain. Athird example, the stoicism of donkeys may allowlaminitis to progress to a dangerous degree ofcirculatory damage in the foot without the animalshowing severe signs of lameness. Donkeys aregenerally less responsive to hoof tester pressureacross the sole than are horses.

Medical procedures are best performed with otheranimals nearby to alleviate anxiety. This is not differentthan horses, but is especially important in the donkey. For all their stoicism, donkeys are very sensitive tosocial or environmental changes. They need to seewhat is going on for a while before being asked tomove to an unfamiliar location or being approachedby unfamiliar equipment. What has been termed as“stubbornness” is actually a donkey’s method ofevaluating any novel situation: they do not like to rushinto anything new. Their stop-and-back “gears” arewell developed and they are also known to sit downwhen refusing to move into a new area such as anunfamiliar barn or onto a different surface, especiallywhen moving from bright sunlight to a shaded area. Ageneral rule is to go slow and stay quiet.

Donkeys are highly social animals and they form

Miniature donkeys are inadequately anesthetizedeven for a short procedure with horse drug doses, and therefore, they experience muscle rigidity andexcitatory effects. Satisfactory results on miniaturedonkeys can be achieved by increasing the does ratesfor equal sized horses by 25%. Since donkeysmetabolize nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDS) at different rates than horses, thesemedications need to be administered at differentintervals than in the horse. Phenylbutazone andflunixin meglumine are more rapidly metabolized andmay need to be given twice daily to standard donkeysand three times daily to miniature donkeys.

strong attachments to other animals of their own orother species with which they have been cohabitating.Vocalization is very common in donkeys. This is mostoften called “braying”. In general, braying is used asa greeting, or for demonstrating the emotions of beinghungry or sexually interested. Breeding animals andjennets may call out toother jacks orjennets and donkeys greet theirhuman caretakers at feeding timeor in an attempt to beg for more food.

Ranger John Vint8/30/52 - 9/20/19

Hello Family and Friends,

It is with great sadness that I tell you that ourbeloved Ranger John Vint passed away onSepetember 20, 2019 after complications due to livercancer. Many of you remember him from his 40+years managing the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area, seeing all of you on horse rides and those busyweekends at the staging area. Others know him for the wonderful family man he was to all of us, his wife and threegreat kids, Jeremy, Gina and Hunter. It would be impossible to share here the many things that made John soremarkable; there were so many. He touched so many lives.

A Celebration of Life...Sunday, November 10, 2019

This is one of my all-time favoritephotos of John. This is at the topof the tram in Palm Springs, herode his horse all the way upfrom the backside that day.

Just another Sunday with my love Johnnie Ray. Fun buggy ride with Colly Cook and the most interestingman in the world, John Cook. Went to Anchos and had dinner, then buggied back home. Love our life!

True story: Our daughter Gina DePuy is in Europe right now on a Viking

River cruise. I was reluctant to spoil her cruise and give her the bad news, butI had to. She wouldn’t be back until October 6 and the news couldn’t wait. So onthe day that I told her of John‘s passing, she was in Cologne Germany. Her tourGuide on their excursion, took them to the final resting place of the three MagiKings. Gina lit a candle in John’s name at the base of the three sarcophagi. It’s

so ironic, given that it was his job on stage

every night to lead the kings to their Savior.

One of the things about being married to

a park (that’s not a typo, he really was

married to the park) is that you always work

weekends and never get a vacation. I made

sure that changed as soon as I could. John

loved cruising, and we were fortunate to be

able to take several cruises before he died. In

March we went to Mexico, in April we took a So.Caribbean cruise which took

us to Aruba, Turks and Caicos, Curaçao, and the Dominican Republic. He had a

fantastic time and even snorkeled with me, which was really something for John!!

It was on our return from our Caribbean cruise in April he received his diagnosis.

So I am very grateful that we were able to get these trips in before he passed.

Many did not know this about John, But during the Christmas and Easter

season, he had a side job working in the pageants at the Crystal Cathedral, Glory

of Easter and Glory of Christmas. He rode a horse on stage dressed as a Roman

soldier, and he was one of the camel wranglers who dressed in garb and lead one

of the three kings as they presented their gifts to the newborn Savior. His work

with camels went on for many years and we did lots of camel jobs together. We

had baby camels in our home many times.

This is another facet of the wonderful Gifts

that John Vint Brought into our lives.

Always involved with animals one way or another— wrangling the assortment of creatures for the livingnativity at the Crystal Cathedral, or the horses barged to Catalina for the yearly Los Caballeras trip.

It was hard to leave Hidden Valley. We moved into a small house in

La Sierra, with (gasp) neighbors. But John quickly made friends and he

was a very good neighbor. He often went out with his good new friends,

Bill Turner, and Robert Kirby, on Bill‘s boat, where they would go lobster

hooping out at Catalina. John hadn’t really done a lot of boating before

and he really liked it. You would laugh to see him, he would go out and

get his fishing license as soon as the season opened, and would start

restringing his fishing poles, and get all his equipment ready. He was

like a little kid in a candy store, or a child who is waiting to open his

Christmas presents on Christmas morning. It brought him such joy. I

like to sail, so we went sailing many times out of Dana Point on my

friend’s 36 foot Catalina. You can see how happy he is by the look on

his face to try new experiences. He loved lobster!

John always wanted to be back one day at his beloved park, so it seems fitting to have a celebration of his life there.

In remembrance of all his contributions to Hidden Valley, please join me in asking the parks department to honor his

name in a special way. I’m asking all of you who worked with John through your horse clubs to formally work together

to make the staging area special by having his name attached to it similar to other parks such as McCalls. I hope some

of you can champion this cause for John. John worked very hard making this park what it is today!

This will be a public event, and EVERYONE is welcome. “Ranger” John spent 40+ years of his life dedicated

to Hidden Valley, Riverside County Parks and the equestrian community. What he has given to us will live on!

An organized Memorial Ride will stage at Hidden Valley and leave the

park at 9:00am. Bring your horses and enjoy a ride for John! Don’t forget

to please drop your $5.00 parking fee in the Iron Ranger. The Celebration

of Life in honor of John will start at 11:00am. In anticipation of a large

turnout, this will be a POTLUCK and don’t forget to bring a chair.

Come and share your favorite story about Ranger John and any pictures you

would like to share and leave for the family!

Rest well Ranger John. We know somewhere up thereyou’re planting trees and taking care of all the animals. We will all miss you so very much!
