Well well well...what a year we’ve had!TraiL TalkTraiL Talk
Well well well...what a year we’ve had!Turkey day has come and gone. RRT conquered Indian Canyon and we will
have a first ever “walk at the Mission Inn.” Elana has secured an expansion of ourcommunity out reach by coupling RRT with the City of Jurupa Valley for the“Adopt a Family Program.” RRT has been invited to join some of the caravan’sthroughout the community where RRT and other riding clubs will be bringing theequestrian spirit along with the Christmas spirit to the residence of Jurupa Valley.
This year has been simply amazing for RRT. The highest ever “new member”sign ups at the Prize Ride, brave souls agreeing to camp at Danielson withoutany information as to what we would find there. Then RRT embraced the “walkat Forest Falls” with a fun turnout and great lunch, no horses but dogs of everysize and color.
We had new leadership at the top (me), new leadership at the Prize Ride(Vicki), new leadership on certain trail rides (Char and Tara). IN addition to allthe ol’ Tried and True Diane, Sue Z. and Sue S. Lisa, Gene, and my dear friendand the amazing “Co-Trail Boss,” Russell Grace.
We had personal triumph and tragedy within our ranks and hosted a booth atthe Jurupa Rodeo (happy to see the Rodeo return to Jurupa), thanking the Edgarsand the Murphy’s for their support on the booth effort. We even attempted aparade to salute the Veterans in the City of Riverside, but the rain dictated thatwe “throw in the towel.”
We changed monthly meeting times and locations, had a new T-shirt design. We had volunteers take over when officer positions remained open (thank youSandye). Kris Brooks, always there to keep us on track while he worked.
We had themed rides (no weiners for whinners).. and come as you are rides.

We have swelled in our ranks to include folks fromOrange County, Los Angeles County and the Desert. Wehave expanded our “photos of rides” to include videos, allintended to encourage those who choose to stay home tosaddle up and “join up.” I still owe a video on IndianCanyon - will try to get that done.
Our last ride was filled with wonder and blessings andturkey left overs. Our newsletter has been incredible (andyou know who you are). This year we started the “whoknew” articles to identify some of the “secret lives” of ourfellow members. More people got involved in thenewsletter by contributing to the “tag your it” section, ineffect putting their own “flavor” into the newsletter.
I can’t possibly tell you all how blessed I have been to beyour President. The support shown me by the club has beenremarkable. With US Presidential elections all buttoned up- we move to the more important (lol) election of RRTofficers for 2017. I encourage everyone to hold up andsupport those who choose to step up and take on the joy andresponsibility of running this club. We will be doing NewYears Day Ride and Chili Cookoff at Chino Hill’s this year- be there or be square.
Don’t miss the Christmas party. Seems if you don’t showup..well..we will just choose to talk about you..and if thereisn’t anything bad or interesting to say about you.. well..wewill just make something up.. and you know how I can be!Bring it on 2017!

Of the 14 individualcampsites in the eques-trian loop at Green ValleyHorse Camp, 12 werereserved and filled withRRT members! Site 9,Dwayne and Lee Gleason,
even opened their extra parking spot up to Gary Peterswho came up for the day! Campers started arrivingThursday, October 20th, with the majority leaving Sunday,October 23 rd. The weather was great. Thursday/Fridayhad highs in the low 80’s during the day and 50’s duringthe night. Saturday /Sunday highs were only in the 70’s!And although it rained backhome, we had dry campingweather. Friday night was an“anyone welcome” campfireat President Kimberly Hall’scampsite and Saturday was theRRT group Pot Luck Dinnerbetween Susan Zurawick andChar Schramm’s campsites.Everyone out did themselveswith their homemade favorites as well as local pies.Although I did not count, campers from all but one non-
RRT/horse campsiteshowed up! After-wards we started thecampfire and visited…some later thanothers! After dark,we even had somewild animals comethru trying to scareeveryone!

Cuyamaca Rancho State ParkGreen Valley Campground
October 21-23, 2016at the
Friday we had several groups goout riding on their own. My ride withthe Gleason’s, Susan Zurawik andmy girlfriends Linda and Jenniferwas especially nice. I took a wrongturn, and we chose to cross thehighway at an “uncommon” location
just add-ing to thefun! As weleft camp, we enjoyed three wildturkeys coming thru to drink. There were not many campers atthat time, however, when wereturned, it was filling up fast. Itwas fun to go thru and meet/greet everyone. As I had notdone a lot with RRT, it wasespecially nice for me.
Saturday morning everyone riding the group ridegathered and we headed out. This was my first “official”trail boss ride. I told Karina and CiCi they could lead the
way on their fast movinggaited horses as long as Icould tell them where togo. That is always fun!My quarter horse walkedout also, so we had a fewslower riders furtherback. As we came tointersections, we waitedfor everyone to group up.

Fortunately for me, Gene Staufferis an experienced trail boss andkept me on track! Thanks for allyour help Gene! We started out the Arroyo SecoFire Road, but quickly cut acrossto the West Side Trail. We cameacross several bicyclists on itwith only one horse giving aslight reaction. Janet Backer gavethose watching a demo of howeasy it is to mount from the
ground when you are skinny! I’m jealous… We crossedHighway 79 at the Cold Spring Trailhead and thenstopped and watered the horses at the equestrian water
trough maintained by thepark. We met a couplefrom Temecula there whowere Mounted AssistanceUnit riders for the park. Then we headed to theVisitor ’s Center for a
people break. They havepicnic tables, hitchingposts, restrooms and anature center / gift shop. The Nature Center had lotsof hides you could feel and
try on. The volunteersthere do a lot with theschool children and arevery entertaining. Afterour break we took theEast Side Trail back tocamp crossing under the79 at the Sweetwater DayParking lot. On that last section, Karina, CiCi, Lisa (allon gaited horses), Russell and I took the “high trail”(Juaquapin) while Gene ensured the rest of the group See Cuyamaca...Continued on page 6

stayed together. Russell and I trotted some, but had notrouble keeping up with those gaited girls! We endedup catching the tail end of the others at the underpass. What a wonderful group of riders. Although I am suresome of them were on slower horses, they all seemed toenjoy the ride. Helma stated it very well in that grouprides are not always the speed your horse travels (hers isslow), but still fun! I was so impressed with the funattitude of all the riders. AND, we did not have any horsesout of control or causing issues! What a great group ofRRT riders!!!
Sunday morning Karina and CiCi were up in the darkand rode out to watch the Sunrise. They showed up backin camp about 8:30 as Lisa, Linda and I were just headedout for our loop to Dyar Spring. Gene/Susan, Helma andSue Z. also rode. When we got back, the campgroundwas emptying fast. We had a nice lunch with Lisa andRonele before they headed home.
The weekend was AWESOME, and if you were notthere, you really missed out. I say we do this again inthe spring and enjoy some wildflowers with our riding!
Susan was actinglike Lioness, butGene made her purrlike a kitten.Karina & CiCi hadfun trying on thehides too!
With Char, CiCi and Karina out front the groupis headed out to explore the sites at Cuyamaca.

We had a fabulousride in Gavilan Hills, also known as Har-ford Springs CountyPark. We had 14riders come out toride on a beautifulNovember day. Theweather was nice, not too warm andcool breezes throughthe canyons, andclear blue skies. We met in the nice staging area at Gavilan Hills Market, and headedout. Great rocks and formations and lovely views to enjoy as werode along. We rode to a lookout point where we could see LakeMathews, the community of Woodcrest and the San GabrielMountains beyond. Nice picture spot in front of rocks that lookedlike a hawk or eagle.Small songbirds, scrub jays, crows, and hawks were enjoying thebreezes, and we saw some really big jack rabbits bounding away. Iwant to return in Spring when there are wildflowers, or maybe a sunsetride when there will bea full moon!
We wandered thevalleys and ridges, andadmired the quartzstones and wondered ifthere was still gold tobe found in “them tharhills.” We found a shadyspot back at the trailersto enjoy lunch togetherbefore loading up andheading home.

Day After Thanksgiving RidePalms Springs at Indian Canyon
Friday • November 25, 2016
We had 10 folks show up and 9 riders. Bill Buehl brought a young friend named
Michael - Michael should be joining RRTshortly. Michael is said to ride “more than” Billand seemed to do very well on the trail.
The trail was a combination of boring andspectacular. Amazing Grace (the starved rescue)led the ride like a champ. Russel Grace can takecredit for getting her ready. Lisa and Vickitrailered in together and were the glue that heldthe whole deal together. Sandy and Trish alsocame with one of them riding out on a spectacularpaint horse.
A fabulous human being “Vincent” followedup by text to make sure that the ride was still on.He really should be the subject of a “who knew”article. Vincent is so pleasant and positive andtook on as the “Prayer Warrior” as we all felt itwas a good idea to invite God to protect us all onthe ride.
Russel’s Buttercup, a trooper as always, justcoming back from an injury. Vicki and Lisa tookthe group out on a “second leg” of the trail and Iam informed that it was quite “exciting.”

The weather was perfect, the RRT groupwas a perfect mix. Gary brought his steadystead and visited quite awhile waiting forthe “second leggers” to return. AmazingGrace ended the day with a spactaculardisplay of how not to act while being loadedin the trailer. We all left Palms Springshaving had a great time.
