1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Overview

This document provides an overview and describes the characteristics of the W-CDMA Remote

Radio Head (RRH) 40W 2100 MHz from Alcatel-Lucent.

Its official naming is the Alcatel-Lucent 9341 RRH 40W 2100MHz, also named 9341 RRH40-21 in

the rest of the document (“40” for 40W, “21” for 2100 MHz).

The content of this document is not a commitment from Alcatel-Lucent. Alcatel-Lucent

reserves the right to change the technical specifications without notice until General

Availability of the product. For more information on features availability, please refer to the

1.2 Scope of this Document

The scope of this document is the Product Description for Alcatel-Lucent 9341 RRH 40W 2100

MHz (3GPP band I).

This document describes the 9341 RRH40-21 unit and the configurations it can/could enable.

It does not describe the digital Node B, refer to [R1], [R2] or [R3] for more information.

2 9341 RRH40-21 SOLUTION OVERVIEW

2.1 Overview

The Alcatel-Lucent distributed solution is composed of two main parts:

• The Alcatel-Lucent digital Node B

• The Alcatel-Lucent 9341 RRH40-21, located on the remote site: 9341 RRH40-21 provides the RF transceiver, MCPA and filter functions typically found in the

conventional Node B.

These two equipments are linked by optical fibres, carrying UMTS downlink and uplink (main

and diversity) base band digital signals along with OAM information.

2.2 Product Positioning

Alcatel-Lucent distributed solution is designed to provide operators with the means to achieve

a high quality and capacity coverage with minimum site requirements.

9341 RRH40-21 is designed for macro-cellular applications, and is an alternative to

conventional Macro Node B.

The advantages of using Alcatel-Lucent 9341 RRH40-21 to replace a traditional Node B are

most evident in rooftop installations. In fact, the limited space available in some sites may

either prevent the installation of traditional Macro Node B equipment or require costly cranes

to be employed, thus coverage holes may appear. These sites can however host 9341 RRH40-

21 installation providing more flexible site selection and therefore improved network quality.

In addition installation times and costs are greatly reduced.

2.3 Benefits of 9341 RRH40-21

In comparison with a traditional Node B site, the following benefits are achieved:

2.3.1 Higher Savings On Remote Sites

Faster and lower cost implementation:

• Due to its small size and weight, operators can locate the 9341 RRH40-21 where RF

engineering deems ideal, trade-offs between available sites and RF optimum sites are

minimized

• 9341 RRH40-21 is a zero footprint solution and a noise-free module: this allows for

simpler negotiation with site landlords and minimize the impact on the

environment/neighbourhood

• Less civil works are required. There is no need for reinforcing steel frames to support

heavy outdoor Node B cabinet (around 300Kg). 9341 RRH40-21 weighs less than 20kg.

• 9341 RRH40-21 is an easy-to-install product (sizes below 30l): the installation can be

done by a single person, no cranes are needed to hoist the Node B cabinet to the

rooftop.

• A site can be on air in < one day, a fraction of the time required for a traditional Node

B.

Less rental area:

• The footprint of a cluster of 9341 RRH40-21 is much less than the footprint of a

traditional Node B cabinet (in some cases also transmission cabinet, battery cabinet

and power distribution cabinet) therefore the monthly rental fees are considerably

reduced (less footprint and weight).

Less equipment on site:

• The digital Node B cabinet does not need to be installed on the rooftop and can be

placed in the basement (with fibre running to 9341 RRH40-21 in rooftop) or in

centralized Node B “hotels” (if dark fibre is available between sites).

• No need for TMAs due to the fact that the feeder losses are dramatically reduced (9341

RRH40-21 are mounted close to antennas)

Great RF performance thanks to the capability of installing 9341 RRH40-21 close to the

antenna:

• No RF feeders are needed, only jumpers from 9341 RRH40-21 to the antenna. This

reduces the feeder loss in UL/DL, having several consequences:

− The feeder cost and installation costs are reduced.

− In the UL, there is no need for a TMA, as the losses introduced by the RF feeder are

greatly reduced.

− In the DL, no RF power is dissipated in the feeder runs. The PA power can be

reduced while maintaining the same RF power at the antenna. This results in the

power consumption of the equipment being reduced. Compared to a conventional

Node B (equipped with MCPA 60W) that delivers about 20W at the antenna level

(assuming 3dB feeder+TMA losses), 9341 RRH40-21 (assuming 0.8 dB jumper loss)

delivers 65% more RF power while consuming half the power.

2.3.2 Reduced CAPEX and OPEX

2.3.2.1 Reduced CAPEX

• Where dark fibre is available, Node Bs can be centralized (Node B hotels) off-town,

thus further reducing the site construction/ acquisition cost, normally higher in urban

areas: cost is further decreased by the use of one single fibre (thanks to single-mode

CWDM feature) per remote site (assuming daisy-chain), leading to a dark fibre lease

cost reduction factor of up to 6.

• A digital Node B can serve several remote sites and Channel Element pooling amongst

them further reduces equipment costs.

2.3.2.2 Reduced OPEX

• Up to 50% reduction in power consumption.

• 20% less site visits: as the Channel Element cards are in the digital Node B cabinet,

there is no need to visit the remote site for capacity upgrades.

• 9341 RRH40-21 has a high MTBF and uses natural convection cooling to produce a zero

noise high reliability fan-less solution.

• Operation and management is simplified as number of Node Bs that need to be

managed is reduced (one digital Node B can serve several remote sites) and they are in

the same location.

• Transmission costs are reduced as no leased E1/T1 is needed, instead owned and/or

leased optical fibre between 9341 RRH40-21 site and centralized base station.

3 9341 RRH40-21 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

3.1 Overview

9341 RRH40-21 is a single sector 2100 MHz (3GPP band I) self-contained radio module,

including:

• A 2100 MHz transceiver

• An MCPA

• A duplexing system

• An optical interface

• A power system

9341 RRH40-21 delivers 40W nominal composite RF power at antenna port and supports up to

3 carriers.

It is an outdoor product, supporting -40°C/+50°C temperature range (up to +55°C with de-

rated RF power) using natural convection cooling (no fans).

In downlink, 9341 RRH40-21 receives the optical signal from the digital Node B in accordance with CPRI format. The signal is converted into an electrical digital base band signal, which

goes then through several digital processing functions (filtering, digital up-conversion, peak

power reduction, digital pre-distortion). The resulting digital signal is digital to analogue

converted and up converted to an RF signal. The RF signal is amplified through a power

amplifier and fed to the duplexer. 9341 RRH40-21 measures continuously the transmit RF

power and has the capability to monitor VSWR.

In uplink, two signals are received from the main and diversity antennas. They are amplified, through low noise amplification chains, and down-converted before being converted into

digital signals. The resulting digital signals go through different digital processing functions

(digital down-conversion, filtering), and are then multiplexed according to the required CPRI

format and converted into optical signals that are sent to the digital Node B.

9341 RRH40-21 has two antenna ports: one port is connected to a duplexer, which provides

the necessary isolation to connect the transmitter and one receiver on the same antenna. The

second 9341 RRH40-21 port enables RX diversity. 9341 RRH40-21 also provides a TX coupling

port for on-field test purpose.

The digital Base-Band processing provides daisy-chain capabilities to link several 9341 RRH40-

21 with only one fibre link coming from the digital Node B.

9341 RRH40-21 is offered in 2 variants, according to optical interface (Single-Mode or Multi-

Mode optical fibre).

9341 RRH40-21 is equipped with

• 3 RF connectors:

o 2 antenna ports as 7/16 type female connectors

o 1 TX test port as SMA female connector

• 2 optical ports (ODC connectors):

o one to interface with digital Node B

o one for daisy-chain (HW ready for future)

• One AISG (V1.1) RS485 connector (IEC 60 130-9, female, 8 pins) to

o support TMA through AISG port (Current Alarm monitoring mode, AISG for future)

o be hardware ready to support RET antenna (class 1) (future).

• A service door in order to control access to O&M interfaces & facilities: one debug

Ethernet connector is located behind this service door, and can be used for corrective

maintenance.

3.4 9341 RRH40-21 Physical Overview

9341 RRH40-21 does not use any fan as natural convection cooling is employed. It is equipped

with an aesthetic solar shield that may be removed, if desired, for indoor installation only.

9341 RRH40-21 can be either floor, pole or wall mounted, using the appropriate mounting kit:

these kits are designed to be easily fitted before hanging and locking 9341 RRH40-21 on to it.

Pole mounting kits support from 50 to 380 mm diameter pipes/poles thanks to two options

(50-152mm and 152-380mm). A specific mounting kit allows to mounting several 9341 RRH40-

21 at the same elevation on a single pole.

To ease installation, 9341 RRH40-21 may be equipped with 2 eye bolts and a strap used as a

handle; these have to be removed once the product is mounted on the kit.

3.5 Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

3.5.1 Environmental Compliance

3.5.1.1 Operation Temperature and Humidity

9341 RRH40-21 is designed to operate under climatic conditions defined in [A10] class 4K2

except for low temperature, high temperature and low, high absolute humidity:

• The total operational temperature range of 9341 RRH40-21 is -40°C/+50°C (including

solar radiation at 1120W/m2). +50/+55°C temperature range is also supported with de-

rated output power.

• 9341 RRH40-21 is designed to operate under the absolute humidity range of 0.03 g/m3 -

36 g/m3 and the relative humidity range 8% - 100%.

9341 RRH40-21 is designed to operate under climatic conditions defined in [A11] class 4.1E,

except for low temperature (-40°C), high temperature (+50°C) and high absolute humidity

(36g/m3).

At cold start (-40°C), 9341 RRH40-21 is in normal operation in less than one hour.

3.5.1.2 Special Climatic Conditions

9341 RRH40-21, when fully installed, can withstand the over-turning force exerted by a wind

speed of 200km/h as defined in [A10], class 4Z5.

3.5.1.3 Biological Conditions

9341 RRH40-21 may be deployed in locations where the biological conditions are those defined

in [A10], class 4B1.

3.5.1.4 Chemical Active Substance

9341 RRH40-21 may be deployed in locations where the maximum levels of chemical

contaminants are those defined in [A10], class 4C2.

3.5.1.5 Mechanically Active Substance

9341 RRH40-21 may be installed at locations where the maximum levels of sand and dust are

those defined in [A10], class 4S2.

3.5.1.6 Acoustic Noise

9341 RRH40-21 does not have fans (cooling is performed by natural convection using heat

sinks) as a result, the operation of 9341 RRH40-21 is silent and no vibrations are produced.

Once fully installed, 9341 RRH40-21 meets the requirements as specified in [A10], class 4M5.

4.2.1.2 Two 9341 RRH40-21 per sector: STSRx+y

9341 RRH40-21 is provided with a specific feature that makes it possible to manage up to 4

carriers on the UL (each 9341 RRH40-21 manages one single RX antenna), more precisely two

blocks of adjacent carriers. By using two 9341 RRH40-21 per sector, the following STSRX+Y

configurations may be supported in the future:

• STSR1+1, providing 40W per carrier

• STSR2+1, ie 3 carriers configuration providing 20W per carrier

• STSR2+2, ie 4 carriers configuration providing 20W per carrier

STSRX+Y configurations using 9341 RRH40-21 are perfectly suited to support UTRAN sharing.

4.2.2 Daisy-Chain Evolution

In the future, up to three 9341 RRH40-21 (up to six in single carrier configuration) may be

daisy-chained on the remote site linked to the Digital Node B by a single optical fibre link.

This feature will be an enabler for deployment using long-distance fibre run, as it will

minimize the number of dark fibres required, translating into operator CAPEX and OPEX

savings.

4.2.3 Tx Diversity Evolution

Tx diversity (future) will require the co-location of a second 9341 RRH40-21 per sector.

Using the daisy-chain feature, an additional short range fibre link will be required between

two co-located 9341 RRH40-21.

As an alternative site solution, the second 9341 RRH40-21 can be connected using a direct

fibre connection to the digital Node B (6 fibres from digital Node B).
