A man died in a fi re in an Eerste rust house on Sunday morning.

Neil Matthys (39) suffered smoke inhala-tion and was declared dead on the scene.

The house was divided in two. A family member Teneal Ismail lived on one side and her mother on the other.

Matthys was living with Ismail’s mother when the fi re broke out.

“We received a call from my daughter

around 02:53 that my mother’s side of the house was on fi re,” said Ismail.

“When we got home, we found Neil unconscious in my mother’s room next to her bed.”

According to Ismail, they were at a cousin’s home when Matthys got up and said he did not feel well. He went straight home.

Ismail said Matthys’s laptop was stolen earlier that evening, but he did report the crime to the police.

The cause of the fi re was being investi-

gated.“The police have not been here to take

fi ngerprints after they said they would on Saturday,” Ismail said.

Matthys grew up in Eersterust and was an engineering electrician in Centurion. He has been living with Ismail’s mother for two months.

A service for Matthys was held on 16 August at Ismail’s home.

A funeral for Matthys will be held at Mara Buysdorp in Limpopo this Saturday.

Consent is needed for vaccinationReitumetse Mahope

Parents and caregivers need to sign consent forms for children to re-ceive a shot that could prevent cervical cancer, the department of health says.

The departments of health and education are on a provincial vaccina-tion campaign for the human papilloma virus (HPV) types 16 and 18.

The health department said the vac-cine was most effective when given to young girls who had not engaged in sexual activity because it only worked as prevention, not a cure.

“The campaign is targeting grade 4 girls in public schools,” it said.

The department said grade 5 girls who had already received their vac-cination shot in September last year, were now due for their second shot.

The biannual campaign is part of an integrated school health programme and its fi rst phase ran from February to March and the second phase from 2 August until 6 September.

“No pupils will be immunised without having a signed consent form,” said MEC Qedani Mahlangu.

Large parts of the Moot and the east of the city could be without water for 48 hours.

The water supply to Villieria, Jan Nie-mand Park, East Lynne, Rietfontein, Kilner Park, Waverley, Queenswood and Eerster-ust in the Moot was disconnected early on Tuesday, 16 August, for welding work to begin.

The Tshwane metro is upgrading its water supply network to the area but had not arranged for water tankers to supply the affected areas saying residents had had ample warning to make alternative arrange-ments for water.

Affected areas in the east of the city were: La Montagne, Die Wilgers, Murray-fi eld, Mamelodi, Garsfontein, Ashlea Gar-dens, Samcor Park, Silverton, Silverton-dale, Waltloo, Val-de-Grace, Meyerspark, Equestria, Lynnwood Glen, Lynnwood, Lynnwood Park, Faerie Glen, the CSIR area, Brummeria, Constantia Park, New-lands, Ekklesia, Waterkloof Glen, Moreleta Park, Alphen Park, Menlyn and Lynnwood Ridge.

Residents have been urged to store up enough water to use for 48 hours or more.

“Once the water is shut off, it will remain off for up to 48 hours,” said Jeannie du Plessis, community liaison offi cer for

the upgrade project. The upgrade of the infrastructure started

six years ago, and the work to be done on Tuesday and Wednesday involved the welding of the connections of the pipe.

Most of the work will be in Moreleta Park, Rubenstein Avenue between Blou-haak and Van Bergen streets, said Du Plessis.

She added that before the water supply could be restored, every new weld would have to be tested, X-rayed and passed off by engineers.

She said welding would not start until the pipe had been drained of all water and was dry.

According to the Tshwane metro, sche-duled maintenance and upgrades were being undertaken but water supply inter-ruptions would be avoided at all costs.

“It may however, be interrupted from time to time on Tuesday, 16 August for 48 hours,” said the metro, making no refe rence to the supply being completely cut off.

“The community should make alterna-tive arrangements to collect and store water during the disruption period. The metro apologises for the inconvenience caused.”

Du Plessis said in the near future the water supply to the Moot and other parts of the city would be disrupted again for wel-ding work in Waverley.

The upgrade of the infrastructure started six years ago, and the work to be done on Tuesday and Wednesday in- volved the welding of the connections of the pipe.‘‘

Dry week for most of Pretoria’s suburbsThe bulk water supply network is being upgraded and will lead to supply disruptions.

“Ek wil graag ’n gesonde en so natuur-

The SA Cape Corps Military Veterans Association (SAC-CMVA) marched to the Depart-ment of Defence and Military Veterans to deliver a memoran-dum of demands on 12 August. The group gathered at the Union Buildings before the march.

Barney Links, association honorary president, said the veterans wanted benefi ts for all dependants of veterans, the pay-out of compensation to be fast tracked and payments of burial support, housing allowance and healthcare.

“We have also not received our certifi cate of recognition from the minister, despite mee-ting the terms of the Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011,” said Links.

Secretary General Adriaan Kobus said: “The Cape Corps valiantly fought wars of resis-tance and confl ict in order to protect the people of this country, the continent and the world and yet we have not been given the recognition, acknow-ledgement and incorporation we deserve.”

“In 1488, when Bartolomeu

Dias had to run to his ship and left the South African shores, one of the fi rst wars of resistance was fought by the ancestors of the Cape Corps.”

Kobus said it was therefore extremely sad that at this day and age, they were still being marginalised and discriminated against by the department and Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

According to Kobus, the minister said her offi ce did not recognise the SACCMVA.

“She does not recognise us even after we came from an elective conference that was hosted by the ministry and over-seen by the deputy minister,” said Kobus.

“As soon as we engage the department and the ministry in matters of integration and for our benefi ts as military veterans, we are insulted by offi cials.”

The SACCMVA assembled at the Union Buildings on Stanza Bopape Road, left for the depart-ment at 09:30 and dispersed peacefully at 12:00.

The Cape Town wing of the association marched to Parlia-ment on the same time and day as its local chapter.

An agreement brokered by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) may bring an end the petroleum strike that has been dragging for three weeks.

After wage negotiations between the Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppwawu) and em-ployers deadlocked last week, the matter was referred to the CCMA for mediation.

“The CCMA commissioner has made a recommendation to both parties and I can confi rm that both agreed to the recommen-dation,” said Ceppwawu head of collective bargaining Clement Chitga on Tuesday.

Chitga and the employers will be meet-ing at the CCMA on Tuesday. “Remember, we took the recommendation back to our

members so we will be meeting this after-noon with the employers possibly to sign the new agreement and that will certainly end the strike,” said Chitga.

In recent week various petrol stations in Pretoria were closed after running out of stock due to the strike.

Other petrol stations found alternative suppliers, which came at a price.

The union has also refuted claims that its members threatened those who were not on strike.

The union had demanded a wage increase of 9% while the employers offered 7%.

The new agreement will also shed light on the duration of the wage agreement.

The union wanted the agreement to be valid for 12 months while the employers wanted to get back to the negotiating table in two years.

Motor vehicle number plate security is being improved to foil criminals, the transport department said this week.

It said the current number plates were likely to be abused by fraudsters.

“The system in its current form is also taken advantage of by criminals who clone vehicles and commit other forms of crime.”

The department said the improve-ments to number plates would ensure that manufacturers were regulated and could account for every issued number plate.

The department was “currently conside ring various options including the

use of the national fl ag and the provincial coat of arms to improve safety”.

The security features in the number plates formed part of the road safety strat-egy to ensure only legal vehicles were on the roads.

On 28 January last year the department published its intention to make changes to number plates in draft regulations of the Government Gazette, and invited public comment.

The department said it had considered input by the public and experts.

However, government road safety coordinator Arrive Alive has tweeted that no date had been set for the introcuction of the changes.

An ongoing feud between the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) and former SPCA Stilfontein employee Suzette Kotze reached its peak this past weekend.

Comments said to have been of a racial nature towards the SPCA on social media led to her suspension.

She responded by forming her own animal shelter.

The Matlosana Animal Shelter and was set up on the SPCA’s premises and began operating without the necessary permission.

The NSPCA obtained an urgent eviction order earlier this year following an illegal takeover of the SPCA property in Stilfontein by former staff members of the society.

The animal shelter was evicted by the Sheriff of the Stilfontein Court, following an eviction order issued by the local magistrate on 12 August.

“The Matlosana Animal Shelter gave the court notice of its intention to appeal against the decision of the magistrate, which did not materialise,” said NSPCA spokesperson Jaco Pieterse.

Kotze started working at the SPCA in Stilfontein in May 2012.

According to Kotze, she witnessed count-less acts of animal cruelty during her time

there.“During my fi rst week as inspector I real-

ised it was not about the animals, but about the money,” she said.

“Most people think when they drop their beloved pet at the SPCA the animal will receive the best care and a chance at a new life.

“But when an owner gives their pet to the SPCA, they get put to sleep immediately.”

Kotze said in May this year she had come to the conclusion that she could not “continue to witness any more animal cruelty”.

“Constant harass-ment from the NSPCA forced me to come forward.”

Kotze said the shelter she formed was op-posed to the euthanasia of animals.

According to Pieterse, the SPCA and NSPCA personnel regained possession of the property and discovered that there were 14 dead animals.

“None of these animals had visible inju-ries.”

He said they all appeared to have been euthanised.

Pieterse confi rmed that all live animals were removed from the premises of the Mat-losana Animal Shelter.

“The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will continue its affairs on both its premises in Klerksdorp and Stil-fontein,” said Pieterse.

Faith is Who you know South African voters have embraced the ANC for too long.

I think it came as a shock to the leaders of the ANC when they failed to hold metros they had controlled for years.

They thought the R1 billion they used for campaigning would work in

their favour, but they should rather have used that money on education or housing.

The ANC has failed South Africans for too long and needs to head back to the dra-wing board on how to achieve the standards set by Madiba. Not Shocked

Well Father, I need a job to supply our fam-ily’s needs. And I want to praise You and thank You in advance for Your provi-sion.

‘‘

Money wasted on campaignIn tough times, when work is scarce and jobs are few and far between, you need to understand that knowing God is having connections in high places.

The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi thanking them for their gene-rosity in supporting his ministry.

In Philippians 4:19 he wrote: “And my God shall supply all your needs ac-cording to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

In this verse of scripture God makes it clear that He is not stingy when it comes to provision.

Unfortunately at times we allow cir-cumstances to control our thinking.

A woman spoke to me about not being able to fi nd a job for two years.

She stayed pa-tient, but eventu-ally frustration got the better of her and she decided to visit the recruit-ment agency that was trying to fi nd her a job.

Upon visiting them, she disco-vered her name had been submitted for over a 100 jobs during the two years, but not once had she been invited for an interview.

The recruiter said times were tough. She went home and made up her mind

that God would not, and could not lie, according to Titus 1:2.

She went on her knees and prayed: “Dear heavenly Father, I will give a seed to meet my need. When I give a seed, Paul said to the church in Philippi that you will supply all my needs according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

“Well Father, I need a job to supply our family’s needs. And I want to praise You and thank You in advance for Your provision.”

The next week she got a job offer. The recruiter said it was only part-time, but when she went

for the interview they had changed it to a full-time offer that included a full medi-cal plan as part of her package.

In Christ Jesus you also have connec-tions in high places.

Believe that, declare that and enjoy God’s provision.

Johan se stiltetyd-stukkies in Rekord.

Uiteindelik was die boere se grond-boontjie-oeste veel winsgewender as hul katoenopbrengste.

My dank aan dr. Dankbaar

My purse was stolen from my handbag in a well-known shopping centre in the east of Pretoria on 31 July.

Needless to say, this was traumatic. All my cards, driver’s licence, ID book, and many more irreplaceable cards were gone.

I had to get a temporary ID document before I could restore my bank card.

The thief tried my bank card at an ATM, barely an hour after it was taken.

Fortunately, my money was safe because he did not have the PIN.

I’m a pensioner and my fi ngerprints do not show. Imagine how many delays this caused.

I could not even vote because my tempo-rary ID arrived took late.

My temporary driver’s licence was ob-tained by 11 August. And, of course, I had to pay.

On Sunday afternoon, I got a call on my

cellphone.A pleasant voice wanted to know if I was

Mrs Muller. To cut a long story short – my purse was

found in a supermarket as they were taking stock.

Mina Besie, the manager, got my cell number on a note in the purse.

The miracle was that all my cards were intact. Everything was still there – minus the bank cards.

What an awesome moment. My faith in humanity was restored.

But wait, there’s more. This supermarket is in Meyerton.

One of the managers said he had to visit head offi ce and would bring me my purse.

I want the world to know there are some heroes and I bless everyone involved in this amazing recovery.

Sometimes I wonder if some so-called professionals in South Africa could be taken seriously at all.

I mean take Zuma’s security detail. The protest held by four women smoothly outsmarted the trained presidential security team.

Are the wires in their ears and weapons on their hips only for the show?

And interestingly enough, the way they handled the four woman illustrated exactly why the four had reason to come up for the rights of women.

Those security types clearly should not be taking care of the president.

And please do not assign them to such delicate tasks as removing four young women from a venue. Perplexed

An outreach programme to benefi t neigh-bouring schools was held by Villieria po-lice and Villieria Primary School recently.

The project was started in 2015 and focuses on neighbouring schools that have a dire need for basic stationery.

This year the project was extended to include warm clothing and food.

The aim of the project was for pupils and police to collect as much stationery, clothing and food to donate to underprivi-

leged schoolchildren. Police spokesperson Captain Coba

Brits said the project combined an educa-tional talk on respect, bullying and drugs.

“Additional role players also came to the party this year and a special thanks goes to Villieria Primary School, Bre wers Rietfontein, Joane Smit, Vergenoeg and Herfsmed old age homes, Old Timers Biker Club and Prof Gisela and her friends,” said Brits.

“We hope that next year will be even more successful.”

Four formidable women in Women’s Day celebrationStephen Selaluke

Eersterust women celebrated Women’s Day with four formidable women on Saturday.

The event was hosted at Eersterust Library.

This celebration was a reminder of what women of SA has done 60 years ago when they marched to the Union Buildings to demand change.

Lapa publishers celebrated the event by treating the readers and the four women Koelsoem Kamalie, Flori Schrikker, So-phia Kapp and Santie Van der Merwe.

The idea germinated when Caroline

Marobie, Lapa’s receptionist and a resi-dent of Eersterust, read Santie van der Merwe’s books and asked whether Van der Merwe might not be available to address the women of Eersterust.

Marobie and her friends are avid readers.

Van der Merwe’s books spoke to them.

The project grew and RSG, a national Afri-kaans broadcaster, agreed to join Lapa in hosting the programme.

Fatima Abdul chatted with Koelsoem Kamalie and Flori Schrikker about their book Kook saam Kaaps.

These two authors have had tremen-dous success with their book fi lled with recipes for hearty, home-cooked meals.

Gee my ’n halwe kans en ek perform.

Agter die skerms met Natassja JoosteHoe het jy by My Father’s War betrokke

geraak?

Ek dink Erica was juis vir my so ’n lekker rol om te vertolk omdat sy so baie soos ek is.

Teater is lewendig.

geskiet? So om en by 24 dae (vier weke).Hoe sal jy die rolprent beskryf?Iets nuuts.

Hoekom sal jy sê moet fl iekgangers My Father’s War gaan kyk?

elke dag moet gebeur.

Dit wat in jou hart is moet by jou mond uitkom.

Anneleen Gericke is in ’n ernstige motorongeluk.

Anderkant vergeet is ’n roerende ver-

Anderkant vergeet is beskikbaar teen R215.

Moordlys deur Henk Breytenbach Vic Nel is terug.

Hoekom sou hy? Die probleem is: Die moei-likheid soek hom.

Eers word ’n man by sy werk vermoor.

Moordlys is beskikbaar teen R215.

A tale of monsters, miracles and hopeAlison, the true story of rape survivor Ali-son Botha, has started screening exclu-sively at Nu Metro cinemas nationwide, including Menlyn Park and Woodlands in Pretoria.

In December 1994, two men raped, stabbed and brutally abused Alison Botha after they abducted her from outside her home in Port Elizabeth.

Against all odds, Botha defi ed death and denied her at-tackers the satisfac-tion of destroying her life.

Botha’s book IHave Life, published by Penguin SA in 1998, has remained onthe Penguin SA bestseller list and has been translated into seven different languages.

Botha was also the fi rst-ever South African to speak out publicly about being raped. She has be-come a sought after motivational speaker, sharing her tale of courage and resil-ience with audiences around the world.

Alison is a trium-phant, deeply personal fi lm with contem-porary fairy tale undertones.

This is Botha’s tale about being her own hero, on her terms - fairy gardens and all.

Alison a story about how trauma is ongoing, forever lurking in the shadows, ready to show itself at any given moment

and devour you all over again, and one woman’s fi ght to keep it at bay.

It is a tale of monsters, miracles and hope and chronicles how Botha’s life unfolded in the 20 years since the attack.

The fi lm features many real life heroes from that night, as well as the acting talents of Christia Visser, Zak Hendrikz, De Klerk Oelofse and Francois Maree.

Alison is directed and produced by Uga Carlini, of Towerkop Creations in association with kykNET Films, the Department of Trade and Industry, the National Film and Video Foundation and Waterfront Film Studios.

Along with the fi lm’s release, many well-known South Africans have joined the Butterfl y Revolu-tion.

Mmusi Maimane, Sandra Prinsloo, Francois van Coke, Jack Parow, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Elana Afrika, Roxy Bur ger, Reyaad Pieter se and Victor Matfi eld are some of the names in support of this

campaign to inspire the butterfl y effect: through small gestures of humanity to combat the scourge of abuse, major ripples of change can be achieved in society.

PRETORIA MOOT REKORD FRIDAY AUGUST 19, 2016 11

Follow us on Twitter for regular local news updates: @RekordNewspaper

Every South African was a winner, following the recent local elections, says Berry Everitt, CEO of the Chas Everitt International prop-erty group.

“The world was once again presented with a picture of an orderly democracy as millions of South Africans went to the polls and were prepared to stand in long queues even in freezing weather,” he says.

“The large swing towards opposition parties and a more balanced political situa-tion in which one party does not hold all the power have also impressed observers, as it is a big indicator of stability going forward.”

Everitt says SA is also benefi ting from the global uncertainty created by Brexit, and stubbornly slow economic growth in Europe, the US and Japan.

“Very low interest rates in developed economies in general are causing interna-tional investors reconsider the developing world, and SA seems one of their best op-tions.

“And the immediate results, which are of benefi t to all South Africans, are a large in-fl ow of foreign capital and a huge improve-ment in the exchange rate, which is now

back at pre-Nenegate levels.” The rand’s improvement, he notes, will

help to keep a lid on infl ation and give the Reserve Bank room to manoeuvre on inter-est rates.

“And that, in turn should create a more confi dent environment in which the econ-omy can start to grow again, employment increase and help SA avoid a ratings down-grade in December.”

It is expected there will be even more confi dence in our economy and in the coun-try’s future – internally and externally – and that will be extremely positive for all sectors of the property market.

New enterprises will need offi ce, retail and manufacturing premises, and newly employed workers will need rental accom-modation boosting home sales.

Households benefi t from stable interest rates, a slower rate of price growth, a chance to lower their debt levels and greater job security.

“In short, we have all just done our property sector – which is the foundation of personal wealth for most ordinary South Africans – a really big favour.”

Relief with poll results

Election results show service delivery clearly mattersOne of the most important outcomes of this year’s historic local government elections and the shift in power to the opposition, the DA in particular, has been that service delivery matters.

It matters to the country, local com-munities, the economy and property market, says Samuel Seeff, chairperson of the Seeff property group.

These have been the most crucial and hotly anticipated election results since 1994, and Seeff says the shift to the opposition in key metropolitan areas such as Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane and in Johannesburg was a clear signal to the government that service delivery is critical. What is more, the better you deliver, the better you do at the polls, as the Cape metro results showed.

We start the post-elections week off on a positive note that democracy works in South Africa. The news from the international markets and economic analysts has also been positive and we have for example seen the rand strengthen against the major currencies to some of the best levels since 2008.

As one analyst, Maarten Acker-man of Citadel Advisory, put it: “This business friendly election result has been welcomed by the investment community with the rand reaching R13.67/$ on Friday. It traded at R13.43 on Wednesday morning.’

A strong rand will have a positive

infl uence on the economy, interest rate and ultimately, the property market, says Seeff.

The Cape case study has shown over the last fi ve years, people want to live and in-vest in areas where services are top notch. This is precisely why property buyers have streamed to Western Cape and the Cape metro in particular in signifi cant numbers.

The Cape has has also grown richer in skills and resources with the migration.

The result has been a buoyant property market with strong demand and an almost sell-out of property stock in many areas. Even now, as the market has been driven downwards by the poor economic outlook, the Cape is still reporting better activity compared to many other areas including Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Seeff says top-end prices in the Cape, especially in the suburbs of the Atlantic Seaboard, are now some 30%-40% higher than those of the wealthy Sandton and

Johannesburg neighbourhoods.Johannesburg’s wealthy will even pay

more for Cape Town property as illustrated by the sale of a luxury Clifton villa early last year, to a Johannesburg business-man for R111 million. This same property is now on the market for R150 million, whowing confi dence in the Cape market.

Where sales in the R20 million-plus sec-tor for the whole of the Sandton and other upmarket Johannesburg areas amount to only about 20 worth just over R540 million for the two-year period of 2014-2015, some 80 sales worth just under R2.5 billion were recorded for the Atlantic Seaboard over the same period.

Koos Venter

Akani Simbine will be able to win a medal at the World Championships in London next year.

This is the prediction of Werner Prinsloo after Simbine fi nished 5th in the 100 metre Olympic fi nal.

The coach of the Tuks/hpc athlete had just reason for his optimism.

He said Simbine ran the near perfect race in the fi nal.

Up to the last 20 metres it looked as if he was going to win the bronze medal, but then André de Grasse (Canada) and Yohan Blake (Jamaica) fl ashed past him.

The fact that there was only 0.05s between Justin Gatlin (USA) in the second place and Simbine shows how close things were.

“Akani made me proud to be his coach. Our goal from the start was that he should compete in the fi nal. I am really impressed with the way Akani raced throughout.”

14 PRETORIA MOOT REKORD FRIDAY AUGUST 19, 2016

Simbine’s medal hope

Brilliant silver for Keeling and BrittainAbsolutely brilliant!

There can be no better way to describe the fact that Lawrence Brit-tain and Shaun Keeling have won the silver medal in the rowing men’s pair at the Rio Olympic Games.

It is the third time since 2004 that South Africa has won a rowing medal at the Olympic Games.

Unfortunately they were also the only South African rowers that could win a medal after great expectations were nurtured about the country’s rowing team who are basically all at-tached to Tuks/hpc.

“Pretty stoked. That was a quality race from us,” a jubilant Brittain said moments after they fi nished.

“Everything went as planned. We are standing on the podium right now, job done.”

This took years and years of hard work, he said.

“Now the whole system working

for us and producing the results. It just feels ama zing.”

The fact that Brittain won a silver medal must be one of the Games’ big-gest comeback stories.

In 2014 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, also known as cancer of the lymph node.

But, being the fi ghter he is, it was never going to stop him. After months of treatment, his doctor gave him a clean bill of health in February 2015 and he was able to resume his train-ing.

The fi rst goal Brittain set him-self was to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Brittain is the second rower in his family to win a medal at the Olympic Games.

In 2012, his brother, Matthew, was part of the awesome foursome who won gold in London.

Matthew has never doubted his

younger brother’s abilities.“Lawrence is able to put his head

down and push his body harder than anyone I know and as an athlete that is what I respect the most.”

Keeling does not know the mean-ing of giving up either.

In 2008, he fi nished 5th at the Games in Beijing, partnering Ramon di Clementi.

In 2004, he was a bronze medalist.Being injury prone he missed out

on the 2012 Games, but this setback only served as extra motivation.

“The ultimate achievement for me was to win a medal at the Games,” Keeling said.

“Everything I did in the last four years was geared to help me make that a reality.”

Summarising it all, Keeling con-cluded: “It will not be wrong to say that I set my goals stroke by stroke, day by day.”

‘‘

Previous participants will know that one of the main highlights of participating in the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge is getting your hands on one of the famous race’s goodie bags packed to brim with great products, courtesy of SPAR and the race sponsors.

The goodie bags get bigger and better every year and this year is no exception.

Within a recycled eco-bag is a host of fabulous products with a guaranteed fi fteen items in each bag including SPAR pro-ducts, delicious treats and beauty products.

But that’s not all. Every woman to fi nish the race will also

receive a medal, courtesy of SPAR and the race sponsors to keep as a reminder of their achievement in fi nishing the race.

SPAR makes extra effort every year to

ensure the goodie bags are packed with amazing products, as the bags are their way of thanking the participants, says Jerome

Manyonga makes country proudFor Luvo Manyonga winning silver in the long jump at the Olympic Games in Rio at the weekend was a fairy tale come true.

He jumped a personal best of 8.37 metres. Moments after the long jump competition a jubilant Manyonga said: “I have beaten my demons. They have tried all these years to bring me down but now I have made it.”

His reference to personal demons was not unfounded. At the SA Championships (2012) his career suddenly spiralled out of control when he tested positive for ‘TIK’ (metham-phetamine) and banned for two years.

To make matters worse his long-time coach, Mario Smit, died in a car accident in 2014, just at the time when Manyonga was making his comeback.

But instead of giving up on life and feel-ing sorry for himself, Manyonga decided he was going to make something of his life.

“Yesterday is dead and I can do nothing to undo the past. It is what happens tomorrow that is important,” Manyonga said.

The Tuks/hpc athlete certainly made

tomorrow happen when he launched himself into the air in the fourth round with a mas-sive jump of 8.28 metres to take the lead. But the best was yet to come. With his fi fth attempt he jumped a personal best of 8.37 metres.

But the drama was not over. Jeff Hen-derson (USA) proved there was truth in the saying that nothing is won or lost until the proverbial fat lady sings.

With his fi nal attempt Henderson jumped 8.38 metres to snatch the gold medal fby one centimetre.

Manyonga and his coach, Neil Cornelius, had a quick scare when Jarrion Lawson (USA) landed in the sandpit with his fi nal jump. It looked like a massive effort but, unfortunately for the American, his left arm dropped way back.

This cost him valuable centimetres and he remained in fourth place. The 2012 Olym-pic champion, Greg Rutherford, made sure he won the bronze medal by jumping 8.29 metres with his last attempt.

Centurion se wedstrydplan was klassiek vir ’n eindstryd soos dié.

manne.
