Kujur, Ravi Bhushan Xess andSuresh M. Aind. The first year students had a weeklongorientation program that helped them clarify their visionand motivation. An Ignatian retreat directed by Fr. BarryS.J. (HAZ) further invigorated them to dive into theirtheological studies with a serious motivation to have athorough contextual grasp of the faith while Br IsidoreEkka, our new Minister oversaw the material aspects.Anup and Rajesh, along with other second year students, were back to the RTC on 30th June. The academic yearwith its running theme “Adivasi Samaj aur Yuva Varg”(Adivasi Society and the Youth) reinvigorated everybody.A solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by theProvincial Fr Xavier Soreng intoned the theme well. Heelucidated the theme during his sermon throwing an openchallenge before all of us. A prominent speaker andthinker Mr. Benjamin Lakra, the former Principal AuditorGeneral, West Bengal as the chief guest of the dayenumerated the theme from his life experiences. Hiseloquence won the hearts of the youth who werespecially invited for the occasion. The audience includedthe recently elected Mukhiyas of the vicinity and the SarnaAdivasi youths. SATYA NILA YAM, CHENNAIThe pathetic and critical situations of the state of Jharkhandat present needs rapid constructive change. Keeping inmind the idea of Francis Bacon - “Knowledge is power”and “ideas rule the world”- we the six vibrant andenergetic scholastics arrived at Satya Nilayam in themorning of 13th June. Two days of orientations given bythe community members and the Second year scholasticsand receiving the power of the Holy Spirit we commencedour classes on 16th June. On 18th, the First year’sscholastics had the ‘Chennai Darshan’.

July was very special and remarkable month forevery Jesuit precisely because we celebrated the feast dayof our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. Compared to thelast year, this year the Novena prayer was very creative, inspirational and thought-provoking. The communitymembers were very pleased with the creative prayerswhich were led by different Living groups. The secondmajor event that took place in this month was the changeof old office bearers. Schs Ravi Hemant is the sacristan,James Peter refectorian and Rakesh Kerketta unfortunatelymissed out the opportunity to take any office since he washospitalized just those days.

PREMAL JYOTI, AHMEDABADThe word of Jesus and the Motto of “Prasant,” the Centrefor Human Rights, Justice and Peace, “Let your lightshine…” led and inspired us throughout July. We went tovisit Prasant led by Frs. Antony Pichai and Fr. SuperiorVinayak Jadav. It was the first time for most of the PremalJyoti Scholastics to visit the Jesuit-run social centre. Thisvisit was informative and thought-provoking. We werefortunate enough to listen to Mr. Sanjeev Bhatt, an IPSofficer, the only person who pinpoints the violation ofHuman Rights by Modi’s government and its role in theGujarat pogrom of 2002, in which over 2,000 people weremurdered, over 150,000 rendered homeless, and hundredsof women raped and molested. We came to know aboutthe Vision and Mission of Prasant. Its vision is enshrinedin the preamble of Universal Declaration of Human Rightsand its mission is to promote Human Rights, Justice, Peaceand inter-religious dialogue.

The Premal Jyoti Scholastics, especially fromthe Central Zone rocked the St. Xavier’s College,Ahmedabad auditorium with Karam Dance on the 16th

July. We are selected for the Culfest scheduled to beheld in December 2011.The students and Staff liked itvery much. They could not believe their eyes to see thesimple but peculiar steps. “Brothers, would you teach usthe dance; we want to learn it,” speaks volumes of theircuriosity and appreciation for our tribal Karam dance. Ithas boosted us and made us proud of our tribal culture. It helped us understand that we the tribals have much tooffer to the world. We can offer the world the lesson ofeco-friendliness, co-operation, simplicity and togetherness.

Fr. Shekhar, the Novice Master of Gujarat JesuitProvince, accompanied us during our monthlyrecollection on 23rd July. His talks inspired us to beintegrated Jesuits. His talks included the History of

KANKEOne of my grand nephews, Vijay Bodra, a student ofSt. Stanislaus’ High School, Lohardaga, got drowned on

Jesuits and their wonderful and excellent work. A veryfewJesuits compared to the world population changed theworld. “Today we too are called to follow the same legacyof our forefathers” was the core point to reflect and live.

Our Founder Father’s Feast was celebratedwith great pomp and show. Our Premal Jyoti Communitywent to Sugad, the Gujrati Novitiate, to witness the FirstProfession of our four young Jesuits. One among themis from the Eastern African Province. Fr. Jerome waspresent to represent the Eastern African Province. We feltthe universality of the Society very much there. ASSAM: A MISSION TO BIND US TOGETHERAfter some persistent request from Fr. Xavier Lakra,I had agreed to help out our men in the Assam Missionin their annual retreat at the Jesuit Novitiate, Shillong(July 7-14). The Novitiate itself is located on a smallhill, quite expansive and pollution-free place with lushgreen meadows and lovely pine trees. The atmosphereand hospitality were unbeatable, conducive, and extragenerous. (Fr. Richard Jarain the Superior cum NoviceDirector, and Fr. Yanlumo Yanthan the Administrator werestudents during my VJ Delhi years.) Our retreatantstotaled twelve (out of eighteen) among who were twogolden jubilarians in Society: Frs. Severius Ekka and JamesE. Lakra, who were duly but modestly felicitated.

The retreat itself, proved to be challenging perhapsmore for me than for the retreatants, because of the dailyincreasing realization I had in our prayers and sharings ofthe immense enterprise that our Province has acceptedfrom the Lord and missioned men who are pioneers in thelength and breadth of Assam (ca. 950 kms). They are theones who are laying the foundations at various points. Inthe later years, when fresh contingent arrives there, theywill reap where others will have laboured. I was unable tovisit Pengree, at the eastern end on the map. It’s only fouryears since our Province has officially taken over themission from the Kohima Region with whom very warmrelationship continues. And wherever our men are, despite all basic inconveniences, lots of infrastructures arecoming up, especially school buildings. (The universitycollege building is yet to start.) Except at Balipara, whichwas the launching pad, our Jesuits are housed in makeshifthuts. Kathalguri still remains without electricity, and theirdilapidated hut might collapse any moment. It’s leaninglike the famous Tower of Pisa! When a devastatingtornado rages at night, Fathers in their pyjamas orwhatever keep holding firmly the wooden supports of thehut, fearing it might be blown a few kms away any time.

St. Xavier’s Junior College (Sonabheel) and StXavier’s School (Mushalpur) have just shown the wayhow with a safe and loving atmosphere, along withsufficient encouragement, the students’ dreams can cometrue. Staff ties with students matter a lot. And if bondbetween them firms up, students will develop andcompete with their counterparts from any otherinstitutions. Srs. at Kathalguri, who collaborate withJesuits in schools, are convinced that regular attentionand personal interest from the staff and managementhave already begun to produce hopeful results. Therefore, keeping a sustained tab on the students appears to be aconditio sine qua non if our students can move fromscratch to success. And if we have learnt to work hardourselves, we can inculcate in our students the passion forworking harder day by day.

Local vocation promotion right from now seems tobe a must in my judgment. We already have some young

Page 14: R.P. PROVINCIAL’S PROGRAMME

The Assam Mission will be a successful one for it’sthe Lord’s vineyard and we have there the “servants ofChrist’s mission” labouring with him. The Lievens missionbegan with many birth pangs, but our pioneeringstalwarts didn’t count the cost of sacrifice and life, andworked shoulder to shoulder with one other. We Adivasisvalue our community life as the asset. But as we join theSJ, that quality sometimes gets derailed somewhere alongthe way, and our life and relationship become superficial, bureaucratic, and unsatisfactory with others in our Jesuitcommunities rather than communion, dialogue, mutualesteem, and trust (GC 35 D 2, n. 19). Consequently, ourmission suffers and individuals get burn out. So theunion of minds and hearts (GC 32 d. 11) will remainperennially valid for all of us, whether in Assam orRanchi.

In fine, my deep sentiments of gratitude go toFr. Xavier Lakra, who took me round to meet our menand mission. We covered two thousand plus kms in fivedays. My thanks also go to each of our Jesuit companionswhom I met after some years, and who welcomed useverywhere with open hearts. – Before signing off I wantto strongly affirm that the opinions and reflection expressedhere are very personal and nothing official about them.Nor have I aimed to cast any aspersions on any one. Amillion apologies, however, if it sounds “preachy” or even“motivated.”

Henry Barla

men at certain stages of formation for the Assam Mission.More needs to be done locally, perhaps by way oforganizing vocation camps in any one of our centres there.St. John’s School (Balipara) seems to me the best bet forhosting such camps. This also means we need a vocationpromoter in the mission who can travel and contact theprospective candidates. Preparing brochures containingour ministries is also imperative. All this goes to say thatwe can’t depend for long on personnel coming fromRanchi. Local vocations indicate Church’s roots have gonedeep and vice versa!

Finally, as Fr. Xavier Lakra and me duo moved fromplace to place, meeting our men and seeing the buildingworks and numerous apostolates going on (George’s GanaChetana Samaj and Laurentus’ Social Work are just twoexamples), I have been overwhelmed by the magnanimityof various funding agencies who have understood ourselfless commitment to the people’s welfare and continueto accept almost all the projects. Fr. Xavier leaves no stoneunturned in doing whatever he can in looking for funds: somuch concerned he is for the Assam Mission. I think, he isthe best “beggar” in the Province. – And, here is the keypoint that came to my mind so often during my briefsojourn there: Does each of our communities and centresexperience any solidarity with our men and mission inAssam? If yes, how do we express it? They are living onalms: they have no extra source of income. Besides ourfervent prayers is there any way to support them and theirwork despite our poverty? I am reminded of how theeconomically very poor communities of Macedonia andPhilippi generously gave money to Paul so that he couldhelp the churches, even the church of Jerusalem, that werehard up (2 Cor 8,1-9; Phil 4,14-20). Let me make aconcrete suggestion, one that hit my mind rather frequently. If law allows, when we make our annual budget, is itpossible to set aside a minimum of Rs 2,000.00 for ourbrethren and their apostolic works in the Assam Mission?Even if symbolic, that would be a concrete demonstrationof our active involvement and communion with ourbrethren. After all, the Assam Mission is ours, notaltogether theirs only.

BRITISH PROVINCE, UNITED KINGDOMIt’s a summer holiday here in Great Britain. After a hecticacademic exercise or a tight professional schedulepeople here value the importance of ‘summer break’ wherefamilies of friends head towards some exotic locationsin Europe or elsewhere just to refresh themselves andrenew their family ties. We, the overseas students are aprivileged lot to enjoy somewhat similar opportunities. The British province is quite magnanimous in makingsure that we visit some of the neighbouring Europeancountries either for retreats, for learning foreign languagesor for a well deserved break. On 5th July, many of ouryoung theologians studying here went for the “ArrupeMonth” in Spain for a month-long shared reflection cumretreat. They were destined to have visited some of theplaces of historical significance for us Jesuits especiallyLoyola. They are expected to be back to London by thefirst week of August.

The end of June and the early July saw Wimbledonabuzz with fun and frolic. It felt as if Wimbledon had turnedinto a global village. The reason was that one of the fourmajor grand slam tournaments, and the most prestigiousone, Wimbledon happening in our own back yard. Yes,the famous Lawn Tennis Club is just about five minutes’walk from our Jesuit residence. There were unbelievablescenes of camaraderie, jostling crowds wanting to get inside the stadia, the great tradition of warmth andpleasantries and above all for the first time one could hearmany dialects and languages being spoken in theneighbourhood. It was such a refreshing change from arather quiet and solemnly pensive atmosphere that hasbecome so identical with Wimbledon village.

We extend our deep felt sorrow and heartycondolences to Fr Amar Bage on the sad demise of hisbeloved mother. He was extremely fortunate to have madein time for the funeral as he was visiting Ranchi to strengthenhis research plans. Our prayers are with him and his familyand look forward to seeing him back soon to complete hisresearch work.

Having completed his three-month stint at St.Beuno’s Spirituality Centre, Wales Fr Raymond is backto his original community at Manresa House, Birmingham.According to him his stay at Beuno’s has been extremelyrewarding and has reinvigorated his inner search andknowledge for Ignatian spirituality. Fr Vinod paid him ashort visit on 9-11 July and spent some quiet momentshimself at the centre.

Since many of our fellow Jesuits were either onholiday trips or attending some summer language schools, the Inigo day, 31st July here was a very low-key affair.Fr Raymond joined the novices for a quiet but a verymeaningful day at Birmingham. Fr Vinod joined hisfellow Jesuits of the other two houses for a very simplecelebration of the Eucharist at Sacred Heart Church,Wimbledon. They were joined by quite a sizeablenumber of parishioners, who were invited for a glassof wine and cake. Fr Tim Curtis, the Director ofJesuit Missions and the Superior of Xavier and FavreHouse arranged a barbecue for those still around inthe evening. It went off pretty well and everyone had agood time.
