Barbara M. Siemens

Barbara Siemens is a Senior Examiner with The Royal Conservatory and is an active teacher, clinician, and festival adjudicator.

Barbara trains piano students of all ages from junior to advanced levels. In her work, she focuses on proper body mechanics to ensure that

students maximize their musical output and at the same time minimize unnecessary physical tension. Barbara emphasizes efficient practicing habits to foster independent study and active participation in the learning process.

Barbara has worked for many years to create a comprehensive Piano Pedagogy Course that gives aspiring teachers useful tools for their own endeavours. Along with exploring the standard piano repertoire and technique, she has introduced the Basic Keyboard Harmony Course into her studio to enhance the practical skills of her senior pupils.

As a university student Ms. Siemens studied with Dale Reubart and Mary Tickner. After graduating she

continued to hone her performance skills in master classes with Robin Wood and more recently with Bruce Vogt.

Barbara has presented in Canada and the USA on such topics as effective technique, pedalling, organizing students at home and in the lesson, and alternative sight reading and ear training exercises.

She has been adjudicating for twenty years, successfully coaching students at all levels in various festivals throughout British Columbia.

Ms. Siemens is the author of The Piano Workbook, a publication that represents her many years of teaching experience. The series has expanded since its original 2007 printing and now contains eleven Student Workbooks (Prep to Level 10), a Teacher’s Manual, and the newly released Sight Reading Drill Book and Rhythm Drill Book. The Piano Workbooks have been adopted by several studios in Canada, the USA, and Saudi Arabia.

In addition to teaching, adjudicating, examining, and publishing, Ms. Siemens also volunteers within her musical community. She is a long-time member of the Vancouver Music Festival Workshop Committee and has spent many years with the local and provincial Registered Music Teachers’ Association; she currently holds the position of Bursary Chairperson in the Vancouver chapter.
