CORKS 'N' FORKS

MOTORING

Dear Members,

It’s pleasing to now be able to provide you with details of our 2 remaining events for this most difficult of years – a tasting/tour on Thursday 8 October as scheduled, and our annual Black Tie Henschke Dinner (again with a twist) - now scheduled for Friday 20 November.

The theme for our tasting tour will be ‘Australian Regional Differences’, and what we’ll be doing is exploring and tasting the differences in wines made from the same grape variety but grown in different Australian wine regions. With 2 differing wines made from at least 6 different grape varieties all around Australia, our palates will be kept very busy.

The tasting/tour will be hosted by Ian/Ches Cook from Five Way Cellars in Paddington, who’ll also be supplying the 12 or so wines. They’ll be served in brackets accompanied by small food portions specially prepared by the Club’s Executive Chef and his team to complement the wines. Full details of the wines and the matching menu will be available closer to the event. The cost per head will be a bargain $100.

For those who’ve not been before, our tasting/tours are relaxed, informal and educative evenings designed to appeal to those members and their guests seeking an introduction to the wonderful world of wine or to expand their existing knowledge.

The twist to this year’s Henschke Dinner is that we’re planning to make it a joint Bests/Henschke night, when we’ll have the unique opportunity to taste comparable wines from each of these 2 iconic Australian wineries. The symmetry is intriguing. Both are long established family owned producers – Bests was established in 1866 at Great Western in Victoria and Henschke in 1868 at Keyneton in the Eden Valley in South Australia. Both make some of Australia’s best wines and feature prominently in Langton’s Classification.

We’re presently compiling the wine list – the choice is breathtaking – and once that’s done Chef will be asked to devise the bespoke menu. Once that’s done and the pricing is known, we’ll provide you with full details.

In the interim, if you wish to book for either the tasting/tour on 8 October or our Bests/Henschke Dinner on 20 November, please contact Yvonne Muriithi at the Club on 8273 2322 or by email at [email protected].

The Motoring Group reconvened Fluid Fridays at the end of July with the lifting of some restrictions. We had a small group, which was unsurprising considering it was our first for so many months however we expect the numbers to grow each month as the year continues. The Club has put in place very efficient measures to combat the coronavirus and we encourage our members to join us on the last Friday of the month.

The RAOLC (Regular Army Officer’s Lunch Club) was started after the Imperial Services Club (ISC) closed down in Sydney and was subsequently Incorporated into the RACA in 1986. Two Regular Army Officer friends, George Ball and Barry Tinkler, who dined together on a regular basis at the ISC then lunched at the RACA. They then invited a list of Regular Army Officers to join them. By agreement with the RACA the RAOLC was born. Members of the RAOLC do not have to be members of the RACA to attend lunches. In recent years, members of The Duntroon Society (NSW Branch) who are on a wider distribution list of serving and retired Army Officers, have been invited to attend monthly lunches as well as the half yearly Graduation lunches. At the July 2020 lunch, changes were proposed, in the interest of encouraging greater attendance and to reflect the integration of the Army Reserve into Regular Army structure. The word “Regular” was removed and the term “The Army Officer’s Lunch” was adopted, with agreement from RACA and the surviving “founder” of RAOLC, Barry Tinkler.

The Army Officer’s Lunch Club is for serving and retired Army Officers (men and women) and their occasional guests. On limited special occasions and by mutual agreement, other service related organisations and commemorative events may join the RAOLC for lunch. These may include events such as Military Anniversaries, RMC Duntroon Graduations and book launches on military topics. These are often arranged through RACA Functions but may be initiated by the Convenors of AOLC.

Meetings: The Army Officer’s Lunch Club meets on the second Friday of each month, excluding January. The normal venue for the lunch is the ISC Room on Level 4 of the Club. Members meet in the Members bar on Level 3 from 1200hrs. Bookings may be made by telephone to 02 8273 2320 or by email to [email protected] and should be in by C.O.B on the Wednesday before the event. An email reminder in a newsletter format is sent out to all registered members before the event. Members may also be advised of other significant news by this means from time to time.

Dear Members

It gives me great pleasure to report that the Club’s Bridge Club recently celebrated its 10th birthday – a momentous occasion indeed!

For those of you who may not know, we’re a relaxed and friendly group of Bridge players who meet every Tuesday for supervised Bridge from 10.30am – 2.30pm in the Members Bar. All members and their guests, from social and novice players to regular and experienced players, are most welcome to join us. If you’ve not played before and would like to learn, please let us know and we’ll discuss the best way forward.

Play is supervised by Derrick Browne and Peter Bardos from Trumps Bridge Centre in Mosman. Peter is an Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) accredited teacher. Derrick is a Bridge Grand Master and one of the inaugural Honorary Teaching Fellows of the ABF. He’s also a respected bridge author with about 10 published books and 50 summaries and pamphlets on bridge play and bidding. His book ‘Beginners’ Bridge’ is widely used as the text for introductory bridge courses in Australia and elsewhere.

If you’re interested in joining, we’ll be pleased to see you! The price is $32, which includes morning tea, a light lunch, computer-dealt hands, score sheets, and supervision and instruction from Derrick and Peter.

If you have any questions you can ring me on 0411 103 119 or Derrick on 0412 947 279.
