The Roy K. Varenhorst Collection of John M. Hickman and Roy K. The collection also includes project presentation books for projects designed by Frank Lloyd Wrightand Taliesin Associated Architects, articles about Wright, and Frank Lloyd Wright ephemera and publicity.Personal papers of both architects are present in the collection along with clippings, images, and artifacts. Biography

John M. Hickman was born May 28, 1925, in Amarillo, Texas. His family came to Wichita in the late 1930s whereHickman attended Robinson Intermediate and East High schools. Hickman worked as an illustrator of manuals forthe Aero Parts Manufacturing Company while in high school, but left his senior year to work as an illustrator forLockheed Aircraft Company in California. Hickman entered the Army Air Corps during World War II and receivedhis fighter pilot wings in 1944. After the war, he returned to Wichita and completed the work necessary for hishigh school diploma while also employed as an illustrator at Beech Aircraft Company. He left Wichita where hestudied architecture at the University of Illinois and worked as an apprentice under Frank Lloyd Wright. Hickmanreturned to Wichita where he worked for the architectural firm Thomas & Harris before starting ArchitectsAssociated with Arthur T. Woodman in 1954. In 1961 he partnered with Roy K. Varenhorst to form John M.Hickman and Associates, Architects & Planning Consultants. Hickman committed suicide April 23, 1964.

Roy K. Varenhorst was born September 25, 1928, in Conway Springs, Kansas, where he graduated high schoolin 1946. He then received a degree in Architecture from Kansas State University in 1950. Varenhorst served inKorea as a naval pilot, earning among other honors, the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement. After hisHonorable Discharge, Varenhorst was an apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright at his Taliesin Studios. In 1958Varenhorst joined Architects Associated with John M. Hickman and Arthur T. Woodman. In 1961 he partneredwith Hickman to form John M. Hickman and Associates, Architects & Planning Consultants. After Hickman's deathin 1964, Varenhorst maintained the firm, later renaming it Roy K. Varenhorst & Associates in 1966. Varenhorstdied April 24, 1997.

Series 1 Box 1 FF 1 - Box 18 FF 26 Architectural Projects. The series includes architecturalproject files of architects John M. Hickman and Roy K.Varenhorst. The series includes specifications, agreements,contracts, bid proposals, correspondence, furniture &equipment information, financial information, testing reports,and drawings. Materials are from the offices of ArchitectsAssociated (John Hickman with Arthur T. Woodman); JohnM. Hickman and Architects Associated; John M. Hickmanand Associates, Architects & Planning Consultants (with RoyK. Varenhorst); and Roy K. Varenhorst and Associates.Materials date between 1950s and the 1970s. Thearchitect's original folder titles were maintained, whenavailable. Also includes the nonproject related office files ofthe aforementioned architectural firms. Files includecorrespondence, samples of office letterhead, logos andbusiness cards, draft of partnership between Hickman andVarenhorst, and typed excerpts and quotations.

Hickman personal files, includescorrespondence, certificates, burial information, and ascrapbook with photos and clippings of early work in Illinoisand Wichita. The personal files for Roy K. Varenhorstinclude materials documenting his educational years from
