NEEDLESSet of 4 double-pointed 21/4mm (no 13) (US 1) needles Set of 4 double-pointed 23/4mm (no 12) (US 2) needles Set of 4 double-pointed 3mm (no 11) (US 2/3) needles

TENSION31 sts and 41 rows to 10 cm measured over st st using 23/4mm (US 2) needles, 29 sts and 39 rows to 10 cm measured over st st using 3mm (US 2/3) needles.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONSwyib = with yarn at back; wyif = with yarn at front.

BERETUsing set of 4 double-pointed 23/4mm (US 2) needles cast on 140 sts.Distribute sts evenly over 3 of the 4 needles, using 4th needle, now work in rounds as folls:Round 1 (RS): *K1, P1, rep from * to end. This round forms rib. Cont in rib for a further 11 rounds, inc 4 sts evenly across last round. 144 sts.Round 13: *P1, sl 1 wyif, rep from * to end. Round 14: Knit. Round 15: *Sl 1 wyif, P1, rep from * to end. Round 16: Knit. Round 17: As round 1. Round 18: *K2, M1, rep from * to end. 216 sts.Change to set of 4 double-pointed 3 mm (US 2/3) needles. Rounds 19 to 21: Knit. Now work in patt, placing chart as folls:

Round 22: *K5, work next 17 sts as row 1 of chart, K5, rep from * to end. This round sets the sts - patt from chart repeated 8 times across each round, with st st between. Cont in patt for a further 22 rounds. Round 45: *Sl 1, K1, psso, place marker, K23, K2tog, place marker, rep from * to end. 200 sts.Round 46: *K4, work next 17 sts as chart, K4, sl marker, rep from * to end. Rep last round twice more. Round 49: *Sl 1, K1, psso, K to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, sl marker, rep from * to end. Last round sets the decreases. Round 50: *K10, P1, sl 1 wyif, P1, K10, sl marker, rep from * to end. Round 51: *K to marker, sl marker, rep from * to end.

Last 2 rounds set the sts - centre 3 sts between markers in patt with rem sts in st st. Keeping patt correct, work decreases as set on 2nd and every foll 4th round until 24 sts rem. Round 90: K1, K2tog, rep from * to end. Break yarn and thread through rem 16 sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely.

RIGHT GLOVE Using set of 4 double-pointed 21/4mm (US 1) needles cast on 58 sts.Distribute sts evenly over 3 of the 4 needles, using 4th needle, now work in rounds as folls: Work in rib as given for beret for 7 rounds. Work rows 13 to 17 as given for beret. Change to set of 4 double-pointed 23/4mm (US 2) needles. Round 1 (RS): Knit. This round forms st st.

Cont in st st for a further 3 rounds. Shape thumb gusset Round 5: M1, place marker, K to end. 59 sts.Work 1 round. Round 7: M1, K to marker, M1, K to end. 61 sts.Last round sets the increases.** Round 8: K to marker, sl marker, K35, work next 17 sts as row 1 of chart, K6. This round sets the sts - patt from chart, with st st at each side. Keeping patt correct, work increases as set on next and foll 3 alt rounds, then on 2 foll 4th rounds. 73 sts.Work 1 round. Slip first 15 sts onto a holder for thumb, cast on 4 sts, patt to end. 62 sts.Shape hand Work 11 rounds, ending with row 29 of chart. Now complete glove in st st. Work 6 rounds. Round 43: K25, slip next 13 sts onto a holder for little finger, cast on 3 sts, K to end. 52 sts.Work 1 round. Round 45: K19, slip next 16 sts onto a holder for ring finger, cast on 3 sts, K to end. 39 sts.Work 1 round. Round 47: K12, slip next 18 sts onto a holder for middle finger, cast on 3 sts, K to end. 24 sts.***Shape index finger Work 25 rounds. Next round: *K3tog, rep from * to end. Break yarn and thread through rem 8 sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely. Shape middle finger Rejoin yarn to 18 sts on holder, pick up and knit 3 sts from cast on edge of index finger. 21 sts.Work 27 rounds. Next round: *K3tog, rep from * to end. Break yarn and thread through rem 7 sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely. Shape ring finger Rejoin yarn to 16 sts on holder, pick up and knit 3 sts from cast on edge of middle finger. 19 sts.Work 25 rounds. Next round: K1, *K3tog, rep from * to end. Break yarn and thread through rem 7 sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely. Shape little finger Rejoin yarn to 13 sts on holder, pick up and knit 3 sts from cast on edge of ring finger. 16 sts.Work 21 rounds. Next round: K1, *K3tog, rep from * to end. LEFT GLOVE Work as given for right glove to **. Round 8: K to marker, sl marker, K6, work next 17 sts as row 1 of chart, K35. This round sets the sts - patt from chart, with st st at each side.
