ABBAFATHER

READING GOD’S NAME

And because you are sons [and daughters], God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

GALATIANS 4:6 italics added for clarif ication

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Have you ever thought about God as a daddy? It is truly one of the most endearing terms we could call Him! While in America children call their fathers ‘daddy,’ in the Middle East, children call their fathers ‘Abba.’ It is not disrespectful to speak to God that way. In fact, calling God your Abba—your daddy—shows that you have an affectionate and intimate relationship with Him. To God, each one of us is His creation. But if you have received Christ as your Savior, you are not just God’s creation, you are God’s child! As said in the verse above, God sent His Spirit into our hearts crying out this name. When the Holy Spirit of God comes into you, He gives you such a relationship with the One who has adopted you that you can call Him Abba, Father. As a son or daughter of God, you have been adopted into the family of God and have the privilege of calling Him your Father, your daddy, your Abba?

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

One of the most powerful things we can do is to pray to God using His name. Journal a prayer calling God your Abba Father. Jesus called God “Our Father” in Matthew 6:9, and we can model His prayers in our own. Ask God to show you what a loving father looks like. Thank Him for loving you as His child and adopting you into His family.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

When children are adopted, it can take a while for them to truly look at their new parents as their mothers and fathers. Do you have trouble seeing God as your Father? He has willingly adopted you and loves you as His son or daughter. Do you believe that? Write down a time you remember seeing God as a loving Father.

ALPHA AND OMEGATHE BEGINNING AND THE END

READING GOD’S NAME

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

REVELATION 1:8

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

We are such a small piece of the beginning and the end. We don’t hold the capacity to remember every detail from last week, let alone know everything from the beginning of time to the end. That is God’s realm of expertise, not ours. God says He is the Alpha and the Omega. Those are the first and last letters of the Greek Alphabet. God is saying, “I am A and Z. I am the beginning and the end. I am the first ray of hope in the book of Genesis and the last warning in the book of Revelation. It’s all about Me.” What a comfort it is to know that God exists outside of time and is in control of all things! And who is our only hope from the beginning to the end? Jesus Christ. Jesus was the beginning as the Word of God, and He is the final Word for all eternity.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Because God is the beginning and the end, that means He has full control over the past, the present, and the future. Is your heart chained by the things of the past? Is your view of the present darkened by the burdens of life? Do you look to the future with dread and anxiety? Journal a prayer to the Alpha and the Omega. Surrender the things of the past, present, and future to the One who holds it all in His hands. Find your hope in the only One who can save you—redeeming your past, renewing your present, and restoring your future.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

When you pray, is it all about you or all about God? When you read God’s Word, is your focus on Him or on yourself? Sometimes we forget in our prayers that everything is about God. We forget that He was and is and is to come. Instead, we fill our prayers with requests and complaints about how the world is affecting us. Take some time to marvel at who God is. It is impossible to even grasp how everlasting He is, but we can sure praise Him for it—even when we don’t understand! He has not just existed from the beginning to the end. He is the Beginning and the End. Write down how you feel about this characteristic of God.

ATTIYQ YOUMTHE ANCIENT OF DAYS

READING GOD’S NAME

Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things

that are not yet done, saying “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.”ISAIAH 46:9-10

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Only God can tell “in ancient times” the things that are not yet done. When reading this name, the Ancient of Days, God is not referring to Himself as old or aged. If people are called ancient, it can be assumed that they are out of touch with current times. But this is not so with God! He is the Ancient One who can foresee things that haven’t even happened yet! God is involved with all stages of time at once! Just as it says in Revelation 1:8, God “was and is and is to come!” We are foolish to think we can know the future. Only God is the Ancient of Days. Knowing that, we have a choice to make. Will we give God control over our future? Or continue trying to be our own “Ancient of Days?”

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Write down a prayer focusing on the eternal nature of God. Ask Him to help you trust Him. Praise Him that He goes before you and sees things that have not yet occurred. Release the weight of your future to Him and commit to trusting in Him.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Daniel 7:14 says that God, as the Ancient of Days, has a dominion that is everlasting and will not pass away or be destroyed. God will forever be on the throne. Will you surrender to be one of His subjects? Because God existed before the beginning of time, He has authority over all things and all people. This includes everything in the future that only He can see. Are you trying to control your future? Give it over to the Ancient of Days. Make a list of the things of the future that are stressing you out or weighing you down. Ask God to help you trust Him with them.

CHRISTOSTHE ANOINTED ONE

READING GOD’S NAME

By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God.

1 JOHN 4:2

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Jesus Christ is fully man and fully Messiah at the same time. Jesus is His human name, as He is God in the flesh. Christ is His divine title, which means “Messiah—Anointed One.” To anoint someone is to choose him for a specific purpose on behalf of someone or something. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was chosen to take our humanity upon Himself and to die for our sins. God anointed Jesus Christ to lead us and to model a relationship with the Father for us. God anointed Him on our behalf—not only to be our Savior, our Great High Priest, our Prince of Peace, our Bread of Life, but also to be our Lord. Do you believe that Jesus Christ is Lord? Even if you believe that, have you made Him your Lord? Jesus Christ did not come down to Earth and die on the Cross just to be remembered as some storybook character. His anointing was powerful, purposeful, and personal. He came down to Earth as our Messiah—to rescue us in a way that only He can, redeem us through the power of His spotless blood, and restore us to God for eternity! He is not just a teacher or a prophet. He is the Resurrected King! Jesus Christ is still the Anointed One. And He wants to lead you personally through a relationship with Him.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Journal a prayer inviting Christ, the Anointed One, to be your Lord. Whether or not you have already made a decision to be saved, you have the choice every day to be the lord over your own life or to surrender the reins to Christ. No one can make the decision but you. Today is an opportunity to let Christ be your Lord.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

There’s only one question you should ask after receiving Christ as your Lord and Savior: “Lord, what would You have me to do?” Prayerfully seek the Lord’s will for your life and respond in obedience! Write down what God is calling you to do at this point in your life. Romans 12:1-2 says to “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” God’s will is good, acceptable, and perfect. Learning this starts with surrendering yourself and allowing God to transform you. Let Christ be your Lord.

EL CHUWLTHE GOD WHO GAVE YOU LIFE

READING GOD’S NAME

But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the

flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…”ISAIAH 43:1-3B

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Read back over those verses again. Slowly. Take in all of what God says about His actions toward you: created, formed, redeemed, called you by name, and will be with you. Wow! Sometimes, when I think about how big the Earth is, and the galaxies beyond it, I feel small and insignificant. Surely, God doesn’t have the time of day to pay attention to me! He has plenty of other things to worry about! But this passage prompts me to think otherwise. God chose to create you and me. He intricately detailed the DNA that makes up our individuality. As it says in Psalm 139, you were “fearfully and wonderfully made.” You are God’s “workmanship” (Ephesians 2:10)—His masterpiece! You were not an accident or a few careless paint strokes across a canvas. You were deliberately created by God to be loved by Him and led by Him. God is saying in Isaiah 43, I made you, I saved you, and I am going to take care of you. God made you for a purpose and He’s going to take care of you. Even when sin marred God’s original creation, He did not give up on us! Isn’t that amazing? God is not finished with you yet! As long as you have breath in your lungs, you can thank God for creating you!

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Write down a prayer to El Chuwl, the God Who Gave You Life. God does not just see you as His creation…He knows you and wants to take care of you. You are not praying to a stranger. You are praying to the One who put breath into your lungs and put purpose into your life. What do you want to tell Him today? Talk to Him. He knows you better than anyone else.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

What does it mean to you that you are fearfully and wonderfully made? Do you feel like you have no purpose? God does not make mistakes, so you are alive for a reason—God wants to use you! Do not despise your life or wish it away. God does not see you as unnecessary, but essential. You are a wonderful part of His creation! Write down ways you can glorify God as a part of His creation.

EL DEAHTHE GOD OF KNOWLEDGE

READING GOD’S NAME

Talk no more so very proudly. Let no arrogance come from your mouth. For the LORD is the God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.

1 SAMUEL 2:3

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

God is omniscient—He knows everything. Have you ever been called a know-it-all? Even if you knew all there was to know about this world, your capacity for knowledge would still not even come close to what God knows. God sees everything from beginning to end for eternity—all at one time. He cannot learn anything and nothing takes Him by surprise. Not only does God know everything that is going to happen, but He knows everything that is going to happen to you. He is just as knowledgeable about you, your thoughts, your desires, and your plans as He is about how many stars paint the sky and how many blades of grass cover the ground. In fact, God does not expect us to know everything like He does. God is omniscient, but we are not! And what a comfort that is that we have no pressure or power to be omniscient like God!

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

We don’t have to know everything or understand God’s ways in order to follow Him. But it is our responsibility to put our trust in Him. Write a prayer to your El Deah, the God of Knowledge. Praise Him for His everlasting depths of knowledge and take comfort in the fact that you cannot ask Him anything that He does not already know the answer to. You cannot surprise God, so bring your thoughts and questions before Him! Put your trust in the God of Knowledge.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Why is it so hard for us to accept how little we know? We so desperately want to understand why things happen and what will come next. But if we understood everything that happened or knew all things to come, what reasons would we have to trust God and depend on Him in prayer? Romans 11:34 says, “For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?” Sometimes, our prayers reflect such a desire to understand God’s ways that they become demanding or selfish. It is not our place to know what God knows. We should not try to counsel the Lord on what He should reveal to us. Instead, we have the choice to trust El Deah with everything. Whether or not He gives us understanding, we can trust that our omniscient God is in control. Write this down: “I choose to trust in God, even with the things I do not know or understand.” Put this reminder in a place you can see it often.

EL ELYONTHE GOD MOST HIGH

READING GOD’S NAME

That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD, are the Most High over all the Earth.

PSALM 83:18

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

El Elyon speaks of God’s supremacy. He is the Most High. He is the One who is above all. El Elyon is translated to mean the strongest of the strong and the highest of the high. It means that God is the possessor of Heaven and Earth. He owns everything and is above everything. Isn’t that amazing? There is nothing on this Earth or beyond it that God does not have power over or possession of. You cannot lose when you have the God Most High on your side. No wonder we owe God everything—He is El Elyon! And so it is with the Lord Jesus. He is also the possessor of Heaven and Earth. Colossians 1:16-17 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in Heaven and that are on Earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” You will never find better security than in your El Elyon. He is the God Most High.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Do you doubt the power of the God Most High? Have you attempted to place yourself as ruler over your life? Repent and humble yourself before El Elyon. Write out a prayer of repentance and surrender yourself to be ruled by the God who is above all things.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Take a moment to praise God for His supremacy. Praise Him that He is so powerful and yet does not abuse that power. God is a loving Master, who not only rules us but also cares for us! God is King; He adores His people! Worthy is God Most High to be praised!

EL OLAMTHE EVERLASTING GOD

READING GOD’S NAME

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world,

even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.PSALM 90:1-2

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

What a wonderful thing to know that in a changing world God does not change! The only One we can count on to be everlasting is God. In Isaiah 26:3-5, He is called the “Everlasting Strength,” otherwise known as the ‘Rock of Ages..' Only on this Rock should we build our foundation. We will never be able to find constancy or strength in the world, because it is always changing. The only thing consistent about humanity is how inconsistent we are! But God—El Olam—does not change! God is not altered by time! God’s strength and consistency never waver. Isaiah 40:28 says, “The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the Earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.” God’s love for you will never change. God’s promises to you will remain forever. You can draw your strength from El Olam, because He is who He says He is and He’ll do what He says He’ll do! He is the Lord from everlasting to everlasting.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Journal a prayer to El Olam. Pray that His everlasting nature would bring comfort and strength into your life. Ask Him to reveal more of Himself as El Olam to you this week.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

It is profitless to seek strength from something inconsistent or temporary. The Everlasting God is abundantly yours! He is the King of the Ages and knows no surprises. Build your foundation on the One who is eternal and unchanging. While our problems are temporary, our God—our El Olam—is eternal! God’s Word says “Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Are you tired? Are you weary? Do you lack the strength to glorify the Lord and extend His kingdom? Seek the Lord. Only through Him, the Rock of Ages, the Everlasting God, can you find abundant strength to renew your soul and revive your spirit. Commit to seeking the eternal God instead of dwelling on your temporary problems. Write down what this name of God means to you.

EL ROITHE GOD WHO SEES

READING GOD’S NAME

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?"

GENESIS 16:13

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

El Roi was first revealed in the Bible to Hagar. She was Sarah’s handmaiden, who became pregnant with Abraham’s child and, after difficulties with Sarah, fled to the wilderness. It was in this wilderness that God met Hagar—saw her—and bestowed grace and mercy upon her. God found her in this wilderness pregnant, broken, lonely, rejected, friendless, poverty-stricken, and no doubt frightened by the circumstances of life. Having no idea what would become of her, Hagar lay down by a fountain in the wilderness. There, an angel appeared to her. In this moment, she felt seen by El Roi. Did you know that God sees you right now? You are not alone, no matter the wilderness you are facing. In your loneliness, you can be met with God’s love. In your fear, you can be met with God’s friendship. In your circumstances, you can be met with God’s comfort. God sees you, knows you, and loves you. Even when the world turns its head, God has His eyes on His children.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

You are seen by El Roi. You can lift up your circumstances, situations, and problems to the One who has His eyes on you. He cares for you and seeks to comfort you. El Roi is a God of sympathy. Bring your struggles and loneliness before Him now. You don’t have a heartache, trial, or difficulty that God does not see and know altogether. Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Pray to El Roi, the God Who Sees, that you would feel seen and loved by Him. Ask Him to reveal His presence to you.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

The greatest model of El Roi is in Jesus Christ. He saw those whom others ignored and ministered to those who felt invisible. If you are a Christian, you are to model Christ. Christian literally means “little Christ.” With Jesus’ model in mind, who can you lay your eyes on today? Can you minister to someone who feels unseen, unheard, and unloved? The greatest blessings are often found in blessing others. Write down the name of someone you can share God’s love with today. If you feel lonely, someone else probably does as well. From a heart that feels seen and known by El Roi, we are empowered by the Spirit to extend love to others!

READING GOD’S NAME

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make

My covenant between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly.”GENESIS 17:1-2

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

God is not just your Father or your Lord. He is God Almighty. In the Book of Genesis, we can see the immutable, unbreakable promise that God made to Abram. Why are God’s promises immutable and unbreakable? Because He is God Almighty. He was, is, and always will be faithful to His people. This God that kept His promise to Abram is the same God that keeps His promises to us through Jesus Christ. The Hebrew word Shaddai speaks of the God who nurtures and cares for His children. God is not just the living God; He is the giving God. In God, we are complete, and no enemy can starve us out! Do you understand that your God is limitless? His supply never runs out!

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

When you pray to God, do you really think about Who you are praying to? God is the God Almighty. He cares for you and will keep His promises to you. Write out a prayer to El Shaddai. Ask Him to reveal His promises to you from His Word. Whatever it is that you are seeking, bring it before Him. His Word says that He will “…supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Has anyone ever broken a promise made to you? Do you struggle to trust people? God Almighty will not let you down. In Jesus Christ, He gives you everything you need. His sufficiency is unmatched! Make a list of what you’re seeking. Whether it’s strength, satisfaction, sufficiency, or peace, your God—your El Shaddai and God Almighty—is the only One who can supply it. If you look to the world for any of these things, you will be disappointed. Commit to only looking to God to supply your needs. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Remember what God asked of Abram when He gave His promise to him. “Walk before Me and be blameless.” God is not just someone we go to in order to get what we need. God Almighty wants us to be holy and righteous. We obey Him no matter what. In His grace, He chooses to give us good gifts. But we must always seek first His righteousness.

ELOHIMTHE CREATOR

READING GOD’S NAME

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.GENESIS 1:1

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Elohim is God the Creator—God of strength. This name is a combination of two Hebrew root words: El, which means “unlimited strength and unlimited power,” and Allah, which means “covenant keeper.” From this meaning, we can conclude that God is a God who can do anything and will always keep His word! Aren’t you glad that you worship a God of infinite strength and absolute faithfulness? With God—Elohim—nothing is impossible. Elohim is a plural word, referring to the Holy Trinity. From the very beginning of the Bible, we get a glimpse of the nature of God—as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All three were present at creation (see John 1:3). God is through all. “For by Him all things were created that are in Heaven and that are on Earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16). Elohim is a powerful God but also a personal God. He is over all of creation, but also actively involved in every part of it.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

When you pray to God as Elohim, you are praying to an artist that looks at you as a masterpiece (see Ephesians 2:10). You are praying to a potter that molded you as clay into a beautiful vessel to be used for His glory (see Isaiah 64:8). Do not act like God is oblivious to your existence. Pray to Him as the One who made you and knows you. What is the Spirit prompting you to pray right now to God the Creator?

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

When you tear yourself or someone else down, you are insulting God’s creation. When you do not care for others or this world that you live in, you are tainting and neglecting God’s creation. Everything touched by the hands of God has value. The same God who created the Universe created you. Do you have a personal relationship with your powerful Creator? If not, let us help you discover Jesus today! Repent for any of the ways you have insulted God’s creation.

JEHOVAH (YAHWEH)THE SELF-EXISTENT ONE

READING GOD’S NAME

Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He

said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” EXODUS 3:13-14

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Yahweh, or Jehovah, is used around 6,800 times in the Bible. It is the personal covenant name of Israel’s God. In the Bible, it is often translated “LORD God.” The name speaks not only of God’s strength but also of God’s sovereignty and goodness. Yahweh means “self-existing.” God is the Self-Existent One—One who never came into being, and One who always will be. When Moses asked God what name he should use for Him, God said “I AM.” Jehovah is the Great I AM. Yahweh displayed His character as personal, powerful, faithful, sovereign, and more in the Old Testament. Then, we see Jesus enter as the fulfillment of I AM in the New Testament.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Yahweh was the name used when God was in relationship with His people or dealing with His people. If you have a relationship with God, you can refer to Him as your Yahweh. In Exodus 6:3, God tells Moses that He had appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by His name Jehovah, He was not known to them. You may have recognized the power and sufficiency of God, but have you encountered His Personhood through Jesus Christ? Have you crossed over from knowledge to faith? God had established His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but they had the choice to respond in faith and know Him as Jehovah. God has already made a way for you to know Him but you have to be willing to surrender your life to Him. Will you pray to God as your Jehovah today? Learn more about how you can have a relationship with God.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Did you know that many Jews are so cautious of taking God’s name in vain that they do not even pronounce Yahweh or write it out completely? They understand the holiness of God’s personal name. What if we had that kind of reverence for God’s name? Have you ever spoken God’s name casually or in vain? Whether singing, swearing, or speaking God’s name, if it is not in worship, it is not honorable. Repent for the ways you have disrespected God’s name. Write down some ways you can restore reverence of God’s name in your heart this week.

JEHOVAH-BORETHE LORD CREATOR

READING GOD’S NAME

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.

PSALM 33:6

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Elohim is the purposeful, personal Creator. Jehovah-Bore is the powerful, pre-existing Creator. God is not only Elohim, but He is Jehovah-Bore. When He created the heavens and the Earth, He didn’t do it carelessly or spontaneously. He was intentional in how He created all things. Have you ever tried to describe the creation of the heavens and the Earth? How in the world could you ever find the proper adjectives to describe something so beyond your power or understanding? We could liken God’s creative purposes to an artist creating a masterpiece. Except, in this case, God is not just any artist. He is the Artist. He was not created and no one has power over Him. We can only make things using what has already been created. Only God has the power to create something out of nothing.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Do you struggle to wrap your mind around God as the omnipotent Creator? Ask Him your questions. Pray to your Jehovah-Bore. Thank Him for creating you. Ask Him to give you a bigger appreciation for all of His creation—whether that means the world you live in or the people you know. Everything can point back to who God is as the Creator. Psalm 8:3-4 says, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” Use this opportunity to praise God in your prayers. He is the incredible Creator of the entire world, and yet, He is still mindful of you.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Do you think you’re the center of the Universe? It is not all about you. Everything was created by God and for God. He is the One who is worthy of our worship. Jehovah-Bore, the LORD is the Creator. We often try to step around God and make things ourselves. What are you trying to create? Is it a future? A relationship? A career? Peace or contentment? We cannot create anything God does not already have power over—so, we might as well stop trying. To overstep God’s power and try to make something out of ourselves apart from His help is like holding up a big sign that says “God, I don’t need You.” But you do need Him. God deserves your trust. Let Jehovah-Bore reclaim His role as the LORD Creator in your life.

JEHOVAH-NISSITHE LORD MY BANNER

READING GOD’S NAME

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under

Heaven.” And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-LORD-Is-My-Banner.EXODUS 17:14-15

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

The Lord is a reigning banner over us all the time. The Hebrew word for banner comes from the root word “to be high” or “raised.” You use a banner in order to announce something visually. This was the name given to the altar that Moses erected to commemorate the defeat of the Amalekites at Rephidim (see Exodus 17:8-15). Just as God was Jehovah-Nissi for Moses and the Israelites, He is Jehovah-Nissi for us today. The Lord goes before us and behind us to give us the victory in all of life’s circumstances. Apart from the Lord, there is no victory. Exodus 14:14 says, “The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” In other words, you should only be still. You should only be silent. God will fight for you. If God is for us, who can be against us (see Romans 8:31)? Find your peace in the One who holds all victory in His hands. Victory belongs to Jehovah-Nissi, and for that, He should be lifted high as a banner that goes before us into battle.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

You have three major enemies in life: the world, the flesh, and the devil. In the Lord, Jehovah-Nissi, you can find victory over these enemies! God goes before you and He will fight for you! Pray to the Lord right now. Bring your biggest burdens and brutal battles before the LORD your Banner. As long as we live in this sinful world, we will have enemies. The fact that we will fight is certain. But we do not have to fight alone. Ask the Lord to fight for you—to show you His faithfulness and send you a victory.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

In Exodus 15, God instructed Moses to write down His faithfulness for two reasons: to remember and to recount. How do we follow these same instructions with the Lord as our Banner? Remember: Write down some ways God has fought for you or been faithful to you. Recount: Tell others how God has been faithful to you. Banners are not meant to be hidden or ignored. They are meant to announce something great. They are meant to be held high with confidence. The LORD is your Banner. He will be victorious. Remember and recount His victory and faithfulness over your life.

JEHOVAH-ROHITHE LORD MY SHEPHERD

READING GOD’S NAME

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul;

He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.PSALM 23:1-3

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Psalm 23 and John 10 are both beautiful descriptions of God as our Shepherd, Jehovah Rohi. When we say “Lord,” we think of God’s deity. When we say “Shepherd,” we think of God’s humanity. Deity and humanity. God and Man. God in human form is Jesus Christ—He is our Good Shepherd. Because the Lord is our Shepherd, we have to be willing to admit that we are His sheep. Have you ever observed sheep? They are dumb and helpless creatures. They need guidance, protection, and care. We are the sheep that God has to shepherd. Except, God is not just shepherding our bodies—He is shepherding our souls. First Peter 2:25 says, “For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” We desperately need a Shepherd. As the Overseer of your soul, God took care of your sin. He paid the penalty of sin, dealt with the power of sin, and is coming back to take us away from the very presence of sin. I can’t wait to be restored to an eternity with My Shepherd!

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Jesus says in John 10 that He knows His sheep and would lay down His life for them. His sheep will hear His voice and know Him by it. Do you know your Shepherd’s voice? Furthermore, has He heard your voice today? Jesus did in fact lay His life down for you. Have you lifted up your prayers to Him? As a Shepherd, the Lord has a personal relationship with His sheep. They are safe and cherished in His hands. Get in God’s Word today and pray it back to Him. Thank Him for overseeing your soul. Thank Him for wanting a personal relationship with you. Thank Him for caring for and cherishing you as His sheep. Jesus knows His sheep and they are known by Him. Pray to your Shepherd today.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

As Jehovah Rohi, the Lord is responsible for every care that the sheep might have. He is both sovereign and sympathetic over His sheep. Have you cast your cares on your Shepherd (see 1 Peter 5:7)? Don’t just seek Him to care for your physical needs—ask Him to tend to your soul. Where are some places in Scripture that God has cared for His people? What are some ways God has cared for you in the past?

JEHOVAH-RAPHATHE LORD MY HEALER

READING GOD’S NAME

“For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,” says the LORD.JEREMIAH 30:17A

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Do you believe God has the power to heal? He absolutely does! Not only does He have the power to heal you, but He finds pleasure in healing you. God wants to heal you—but He will do it in His timing and in His way. The Lord can heal instantaneously by a miracle or over time through medicine. Remember, though, that not every Christian will be healed in this lifetime. As you live on this Earth, God is way more concerned with your holiness than with your health. One day, in Heaven, our bodies will finally be redeemed for eternity. For now, we must seek the Lord to heal our souls and make us to look more like Him each day. Not only can God mend our wounds and fix our flaws, but He can bind a broken heart or soothe any sorrow. The LORD Your Healer has the power to heal every part of you. Will you ask Him for healing? Have you asked Him to heal anyone else? You can trust that the Lord has the power to heal you both physically and spiritually. If you are not healed in this life, you will certainly be healed in eternity.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

God has the power and the pleasure to heal you. But He wants you to ask Him for healing. He knows what you need, but have you personally admitted to Him your need for it? Pray to your Jehovah-Rapha. One of the most intimate ways to pray is with Scripture. Write down this verse and pray it out loud. “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved, for You [Jehovah-Rapha] are my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14). Thank the Lord that He is your Jehovah-Rapha. Ask Him for His strength to be made perfect in your weakness (see 2 Corinthians 12:9).

JUDGES 6:23-24

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

In Jewish culture, it is common to greet others with the blessing “Shalom.” Shalom means "peace," but it is intended to point people to the Lord as their peace. Where do you find peace in a world that is anything but peaceful? There is nothing that can provide for you the peace and contentment that you desire under the sun. It is the Lord that is your peace. It is the Lord that maintains the contentment of your heart. Jesus is our Prince of Peace. His power is unmatchable, and His peace is unable to be replicated. Jesus has already overcome the world! In Him, we may find peace (see John 16:33). Only in Jesus Christ, Jehovah-Shalom, will you find security, sufficiency, and serenity.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

America needs an alliance with the Almighty. America needs a league with the Lord. America needs to experience Jehovah-Shalom. Why? Because Jehovah-Shalom is the only One big enough, strong enough, and wise enough to deliver America. Pray to Jehovah-Shalom. Lift your requests up to Him for His peace, which surpasses all understanding (see Philippians 4:7)—peace to cover your life, your family, and your nation. America needs Jehovah-Shalom. And so do you!

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

The Lord greeted Gideon in peace, so Gideon built an altar to remember that attribute of God. The best way to respond to knowing God as Peace is to worship Him for it on the altar of your heart. There’s no man more discontent than one who is not experiencing the amazing grace of God. Have you experienced the grace of God? Do you trust Him as your Jehovah-Shalom, your Peace? Isaiah 26:3 says that God will keep you in perfect peace if you set your mind on Him and trust in Him. Write down something you lack peace about. Then write out a prayer asking Jehovah-Shalom to provide the peace you need to get through your situation. He alone can give you peace.

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAHTHE LORD IS THERE

READING GOD’S NAME

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

PSALM 23:4

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

God is omnipresent. He is everywhere. He hears every murmur. He sees every movement. He knows every motive. Neither death, darkness, nor distance can hide us from Jehovah-Shammah. For some, the thought that God is everywhere could be scary. But it shouldn’t be. God’s presence should be a comfort, not a cause for complaint. When you are discouraged, His presence is there to see you through. When you are lonely, His presence is there to cheer you up. When you are worried, His presence is there to calm you down. When you are tempted, His presence is there to help you escape. In any circumstance you may face, when you ask “To whom can I turn? Where does my help come from? Who is on my side? Who sees me? Who knows me? Who hears me?”, God says, I am here, and I am not going anywhere. I am the Lord who is Present.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Sometimes, it is all we can ask for to have someone there—to listen to us, to sit with us, to be there for us. Well, friend, look no further! God is an ever-present help in times of trouble (see Psalm 46:1), a Father to the fatherless (see Psalm 68:5). Jehovah-Shammah can be whatever you need, for He will always be there for you. Do you need someone to talk to or give you advice? Find your refuge in God’s presence. Have a conversation with Him right now. He will listen. Dive into His Word and see what He has to say about your present needs! He will speak. God, your Jehovah-Shammah, is here.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Psalm 9:10 says that those who know God’s name will put their trust in Him. Do you know the Lord as your Jehovah-Shammah? How does it make you feel that God is always there? Have you been trying to hide things from Him? He already knows all things, so you might as well repent and get right with God. Does God feel distant to you? Sin may have, in fact, distanced you from Him. The Lord has never left. Has your heart drifted from Him? Draw near to God and you will experience His presence again (see James 4:8).

JEHOVAH-SABBAOTHTHE LORD OF HOSTS

READING GOD’S NAME

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of

hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."1 SAMUEL 17:45

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

Jehovah-Sabbaoth literally means “the LORD Almighty.” It speaks of the sovereignty of God over all the powers of the universe. What is incredible about this name of God is that it is a part of every other aspect of God’s nature. God is not just a comforter—He is the Almighty Comforter. God is not just a healer—He is the Almighty Healer. You cannot be introduced to the personhood of God without being impacted by the power of God. David understood the power of Jehovah-Sabbaoth. When he went against Goliath with five stones and a sling, he knew that he had God Almighty on his side. David told Goliath, “You may have a sword, spear, and javelin, but I have the Lord of hosts—the God of armies!” Who can win in a battle against the God of armies? Maybe, like David, you are facing your own Goliath today. Whether you are being attacked by a sword of slander, a spear of strife, a shield of sinful strongholds, or any other weapon of destruction, you have nothing to fear! The Lord your God is the LORD Almighty! First John 4:4 says, “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” We’re not to be terrified by Satan. We are to respect the authority and power that he has if we get outside of the will of God, but if we stay in the will of God, we have nothing to worry about. When the LORD Sabbaoth is with us, we will prevail.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

The Lord will always be the God of Armies—but have you surrendered to being one of His soldiers? If you are fighting for the wrong team, defeat is certain. When God Almighty is for you, who can be against you? God wants to fight for you. God wants to strengthen you. But He will not force you to enlist in His army. The choice is yours to make. There is no question that you will face battles in life. You must decide who you want on your side. Commit yourself in prayer right now to the LORD Almighty. Ask Him to strengthen you and go before you in your battles. Ask Him to reveal His power to you.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Do you remember God Almighty in your battles? Make a list of some battles that you are facing. Next to each battle, write down Jehovah-Sabbaoth: The LORD Is Almighty.

JEHOVAH-TSIDKENUTHE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

READING GOD’S NAME

Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.JEREMIAH 23:6

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

We are not righteous in and of ourselves—and we never will be. Our righteousness comes from God alone. Righteous means “virtuous, justifiable, morally right or holy.” How are we to come before the Lord if we are not holy? The answer is found in Jesus Christ. When Jesus saves us, we put on His righteousness like a robe. Hebrews 12:14 says that without holiness, “no one will see the Lord.” But God made a way for us to dwell with Him in holiness through Jesus! Second Corinthians 5:21 tells us that, “He [God] made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Through Jehovah-Tsidkenu, we find the strength to be holy and pursue uprightness. If you are a child of God, you are holy. Do you feel like a failure at living the Christian life? Friend, that is right where you need to be. God never asked you to live the Christian life apart from Him. He wants to be your strength and guide you in His righteousness. He wants to live the Christian life through you and do for you what you could never do for yourself.

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

Pray to Jehovah-Tsidkenu a prayer of praise, gratitude, and petition. Praise Him because of His righteousness (see Psalm 7:17). Thank Him for sending His Son, Jesus, to model righteousness for you and to make you righteous before God (see 1 Corinthians 1:30). Ask Him to guide you in living a righteous life and to increase your righteousness (see 2 Corinthians 9:10).

RESPONDING TO GOD’S NAME

Have you ever felt hopeless before God? You know what He is asking of you and you try to do better, but you fall back into sin over and over again? All throughout Scripture, people felt hopeless before God because of their sin. They tried to right their wrongs through sacrifices, but God was far more interested in the condition of their hearts before Him (see Proverbs 21:3). You may be doing all the right things but is your heart in the right place? God cares a lot more about your heart than your habits. When your heart is right before the Lord, the right actions will begin to follow. Give your heart to Jesus. Only through Him can you be made righteous before God. Write down a commitment to follow Jesus and seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness (see Matthew 6:33). If you need help making a commitment to Jesus, we’d love to help you settle that decision!

JEHOVAH-JIREHTHE LORD WILL PROVIDE

READING GOD’S NAME

And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

GENESIS 22:14

REFLECTING ON GOD’S NAME

You may be familiar with the story of Abraham and Isaac from Genesis 22. God promised Abraham a son and then later asked him to sacrifice that son as a testament to his faith in God. It is on the mountain where Abraham was sent to sacrifice Isaac that we are introduced to Jehovah-Jireh, The LORD Our Provider. Just as Abraham is about to sacrifice his son, an “Angel of the LORD” calls to him and says, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me” (Genesis 22:12). Then, God provided a ram to be offered up instead of Isaac. After this encounter with God, Abraham names that place Jehovah-Jireh. Just as God provided a lamb for Abraham, He provided a Lamb for us—when He sacrificed His only Son on the Cross. God became the Lamb through Christ in order to reconcile us to Himself! Amazing! When Abraham calls God Jehovah-Jireh, he is not just looking at Him as someone who gives gifts or blessings. It is far more personal than that. As our Jehovah-Jireh, God sees our needs and makes provisions for them. Not only does He see the needs—He experiences them and empathizes with us. He is a compassionate and conscious Provider. Philippians 4:19 says, “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” God has promised to provide for you—He will fulfill that promise!

REFERRING TO GOD BY HIS NAME

The greatest thing God has ever provided for us is and always will be an eternity in Heaven through the salvation offered by Jesus Christ! Paul says in Romans 8:32, “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” We have everything we need in Christ Jesus! Even if you feel God has not given you anything else, you can thank Him for His forgiveness and salvation. You can thank Him for Jesus. Have you thanked God for saving you? Have you thanked Him for providing for you? Pray to your Jehovah-Jireh right now, thanking Him for seeing you and meeting your needs.
