The dark bay had tried two turns for the first time in his most recent outing, finish- ing second by a half length in an Aqueduct allowance test Feb. 27. Adding blinkers in his first try vs. stakes foes, he shadowed Saintly Look (Saint Ballado) for six furlongs, drove to the front at the top of the lane and dug down deep to hold off the runner-up. “This horse has a beautiful long stride,” winning jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. told The Blood-Horse . “Once he gets going, he won’t give up. The Making of a Hero... Foaled in Maryland, New York Hero (Partner’s Hero)started his career with a second-place finish in an Aque-duct maiden Jan. 18. He returned 13 days later tonotch his first win and added a six-furlong allowancesuccess Feb. 19 before his excellent effort in his firsttry at a route. While his trainer felt he was ready for thestep up into stakes competition, she decided that blink-ers were in order as well. “Last time out he waited on[the winner], so I added the blinkers,” Pedersen said. The colt will return to New York for his next start, taking on Empire Maker in the Apr. 12 GI Wood Memo-rial. “Bring it on, baby,” the conditioner said. “I feel inmy heart that he will keep winning.”

Lion Tamer Feels the Crack of the Whip... Lion Tamer (Will’s Way), sent off the 4-5 favoriteafter his six-length victory in the GII Hutcheson S. atGulfstream Park, was trying two turns for the first time.Caught behind horses while near the back of the packearly, he launched a bid at the top of the stretch, buthung late and could do no better than fourth. “He gottoo far back and that cost him the race,” jockey JohnVelazquez said. “With this kind of track, it was toughfor him to get rolling late. But...he’s never been twoturns before, so he should get better.” Added trainerTodd Pletcher, “Obviously this is not the result that wewanted, but we are not discouraged. The [Kentucky]Derby is still in our thoughts. The question now iswhether or not he needs another start before then.”

TRF Animal Planet Movie to Air: Big Spender, an original movie based on the Thor-oughbred Retirement Foundation and the positive influ-ence it has had on prison inmates, will debut Tuesday,Mar. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Animal Planet. The moviefollows Eddie Burton, a repeat offender who has beenunable to put his life back together and is jeopardizinghis relationship with his young son. But Burton turns hislife around and he is able to win back his son afterentering a prison program run by the TRF. The rehabili-tation program in Big Spender is based on the TRF'sfacility at the Wallkill Correctional Institute in Wallkill,New York. Casper Van Dien stars in the role of EddieBurton. Director Paul Schneider said his inspiration wasa newspaper story he read about the TRF and how itsprograms had had such a positive influence on prison-ers, while finding homes for retired race horses whomay have otherwise gone to slaughter. "I came acrossa story on the TRF that appeared in the New YorkTimes," he said. "The headline was something like'Cast Away Horses, Cast Away Men.' I was immedi-ately drawn to that. Here were these guys, nothing hadworked for them until the TRF helped change theirlives. That said to me, this was a story. It jumped offthe page." The horse in the movie is based on Banker'sJet, who won 28 of his 106 starts before breakingdown in 1991. Privately retired, he was found at a farmin upstate New York in terrible condition and was sentto Wallkill, where he was nursed back to health by theprogram's inmates. Once Schneider visited the Wallkillfacility, he knew it was a story that had to be told. "Itwas such an unusual setting," he said. "You had thisjuxtaposition of the prison and this bucolic, pastoralfarm. There were these hardened men who had thissoftness and affection for these horses. It was reallysomething to see." Additional showtimes are: Friday,Mar. 28, 12 noon and 9 p.m.; and Sunday, Mar. 30 at12 noon. For additional information on the film, visitwww.animal.discovery.com. For additional informationon the TRF, visit www.trfinc.org.
